Co-author does not want biography+photo in paper submission

Some journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (randomly picked) require a biography and sometimes also a photo of the paper authors.

Currently I have the case that a co-author working in the industry does not want this. He says (and I can totally understand this) that he does not want that possible future companies will find a photo of him when using a search engine. He also does not like the biography part but would accept this, if there is no other solution.

Question: Is it uncommon to ask the Editor-in-chief whether the biography and/or photos may be omitted? The journal would be a perfect match so that I do not want to pick another one just because of this.

Rather than trying to determine whether it is common or not to get the EiC involved in this matter, I would like to suggest that you ask a more "productive" question: are there established ways of handling the case when a co-author does not want to include a bio and a photo? The answer to this question, as far as the IEEE is concerned, is "yes."

Next to the author's name, simply state:

Randy D. Fuddles, photograph and biography not available at the time of publication.

  • 21 Actually, you can find this in IEEE Editorial Style Manual : James A. Author (S’xx—M’xx), photograph and biography not available at time of publication. –  Nobody Commented Mar 1, 2016 at 12:34
  • actually I've seen this in paper I was reading few days ago –  Andrei Commented Mar 1, 2016 at 21:34

I can't really say that I "get" the concern of the co-author here, but I am aware that different people have dramatically different views on privacy than I do.

In general, this is definitely a question that you can ask the Editor-in-Chief without concern. However, depending on how many submissions the journal in question gets, it is possible that the EiC may be rather uncompromising upfront. For some top-level journals, submissions are a dime a dozen, and I have seen editors that see little need to engage in potentially time-consuming discussions with authors prior to even seeing an acceptable manuscript. Hence they may just point to an existing policy if there is one, without much further thought.

Hence, another possibility would be to just submit the paper regularly, and delay the problem until the paper proofing phase. If your paper is deep enough into the process that the question actually becomes urgent, it seems exceedingly likely that the editor and/or responsible persons from the publisher's side will be willing to compromise over such a triviality rather than reject the paper. For instance, they could allow your co-author to have a placeholder rather than his photo, and/or have a very short bio text along the lines of "Dr XY is currently a research engineer at GoodStuff Inc. For privacy reasons, no other information is given."

  • 2 It should be noted that there are tons of IEEE papers where author picture and biography are missing because the author didn't provide them on time for publication. It is probably a requirement not strictly enforced. –  Massimo Ortolano Commented Mar 1, 2016 at 11:30
  • My vague recollection from the last time I published in an IEEE journal is the bio stuff only comes in at final submission. –  Jon Custer Commented Mar 1, 2016 at 13:40

When you upload a photo you will see info at the bottom right of the page which gives you options for this:

Use Inside Text

To use this image inside the text of a profile, try pasting this snippet of code into the bio/text section:

{{Image|file=Photos Image Description-.jpg |caption= }}

To align it on the right side of the page, in a medium size, with a different caption:

{{Image|file=Photo Image Description-.jpg |align=r |size=m |caption=Here's an image. }}

Further information on using this can be found at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Image

smiley

Though for those new to WikiTree I should include a reminder that much of the usage described on those Wikipedia pages does not apply to WikiTree. For WT, once the image is uploaded formatting is limited to our image template parameters . Because it had to be so heavily customized for genealogy, WikiTree runs on a core version of MediaWiki that's 13 years old and that can't, pragmatically speaking, be updated.

So I'm 99% sure that we can't embed external images, as nice a feature as that would be. On that same wish-list I'd add the uploading of other MIME types, like audio and video, which can't be used on WikiTree but are used at other MediaWiki sites, like Wikipedia.

Bibliography management in LaTeX

Introduction

When it comes to bibliography-management packages, there are three main options in LaTeX: bibtex , natbib and biblatex .

This article explains how to use the biblatex package, to manage and format the bibliography in a LaTeX document. biblatex is a modern option for processing bibliography information, provides an easier and more flexible interface and a better language localization than the other two options.

A minimal working example of the biblatex package is shown below:

BiblatexEx1OLV2.png

There are four bibliography-related commands in this example:

Overleaf provides several templates with pre-defined styles to manage bibliographies. See this link .  Open an example of the biblatex package in Overleaf

Basic usage

Several parameters can be passed to the package import command, as in the following example:

BiblatexExample2OLV2.png

Some extra options, inside brackets and comma-separated, are added when importing biblatex :

The rest of the commands were explained in the introduction .

Open a more complete biblatex example in Overleaf

The bibliography file

The bibliography files must have the standard bibtex syntax

This file contains records in a special format; for instance, the first bibliographic reference is defined by:

The information in this file can later be printed and referenced within a L a T e X document, as shown in the previous sections, with the command \addbibresource{sample.bib} . Not all the information in the .bib file will be displayed, it depends on the bibliography style set in the document.

Customizing the bibliography

Biblatex allows high customization of the bibliography section with little effort. It was mentioned that several citation styles and bibliography styles are available, and you can also create new ones. Another customization option is to change the default title of the bibliography section.

BiblatexEx3OLV2.png

The additional parameter title={Whole bibliography} passed inside brackets to the command \printbibliography is the one that changes the title.

The bibliography can also be subdivided into sections based on different filters, for instance: print only references from the same author, the same journal or similar title. Below an example.

BiblatexEx4OLV2.png

Here, the bibliography is divided in 4 sections. The syntax of the commands used here is explained below:

Adding the bibliography in the table of contents

For the bibliography the be printed in the table of contents an extra option must be passed to \printbibliography

BiblatexEx5OLV2.png

A section and a subsection are added to the table of contents:

  • In the first case, adding heading=bibintoc adds the title to the table of contents as an unnumbered chapter if possible or as an unnumbered section otherwise.
  • The second case is heading=subbibintoc that adds the title as a second level entry in the table of contents, in this example as a subsection nested in "Whole bibliography".

Biography of a Photo

Two iconic photographs of conflict shape the course of history and inspire a quest for justice.    This feature-length documentary film traces the life stories, the biographies , of two iconic images—one taken in Panama (1989), the other in Bosnia (1992)—that have led extraordinary existences.

After their initial dissemination in the news, these two photos “grow up” and reappear in other, unexpected spheres of society; they are also, shockingly, subject to institutionalized disappearances. And amidst these twists and turns of the photos’ histories exist two individuals whose lives were forever changed by the events captured on film. To this day, Manuel from Panama and Alma from Bosnia are using the iconic photos in a painful search for justice.

Meet the Directors

Ron Haviv is an Emmy-nominated, award-winning photographer and co-founder of the agency VII, dedicated to documenting conflict and raising awareness about human rights issues around the globe. In the last three decades, Haviv has covered more than twenty-five conflicts and worked in over one hundred countries. He has published four critically acclaimed collections of photography, and his work has been featured in numerous museums and galleries, including the Louvre, the United Nations, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Dr. Lauren Walsh is a professor and writer. She teaches at The New School and New York University, where she is the Director of Gallatin’s Photojournalism Lab. Walsh is coeditor of The Future of Text and Image (2012) and Millennium Villages Project (2016), and editor of Macondo: Memories of the Colombian Conflict (2017). Her latest book is Conversations on Conflict Photography (2019), and she is Director of Lost Rolls America , a national public archive of photography and memory.

IEEEtran remove author picture

I'm using LyX and the article (IEEEtran) template to write a paper for an IEEE conference.

In the biographies section, there's a default space for a picture for the first author. Even if I remove the optional placeholder in the LyX GUI, There's an empty box generated in the PDF where such a picture would go.

I know that I can get around this with LaTeX directly by using \begin{IEEEbiographynophoto} instead of \begin{IEEEbiography} . However, I do not see a way to get around this without having to export to LaTeX from LyX and then edit the .tex file. Is there a way to get LyX to not require a picture for the first author?
