I Tested Three AI Essay-writing Tools, and Here’s What I Found

An over-the-shoulder photograph of a college student writing an essay on a laptop

Writing essays can be draining, tedious, and difficult, even for me—and I write all day long for a living. If writing isn’t your special skill, it’s even harder, which is why there are so many sites and products out there that are designed to help you get your homework done. Some of them are pretty unethical, and I’m not going to recommend hiring someone else to write your papers for you, but there are some cool AI tools that can give you a hand that are worth considering. (The essay-writing businesspeople are probably using these, too, so you’re better off eliminating the middleman and using them on your own.)

The best AI essay-helper tools

I have an essay due next week on the history and impact of a federal law, 21 U.S.C. S856, which outlaws the operation of any building where drugs are made or used. I won’t lie: I’m excited to work on it this weekend, but that’s just me. I tested out a few of the more popular AI essay-helper tools, pretending I wasn’t excited about it, to see how they worked. Here’s my assessment.

First up was Grammarly , which prompted me to fill out a personalization quiz before I could use it. I told the site I was a grad student, interested in improving the vocabulary I use in my work, and looking to brainstorm topics for my essay. I used the text-input section to type a quick introductory paragraph and selected “Generative AI” from the list of options. When I hit the “Improve It” button, Grammarly showed me a revised version that added a bunch of words, but still said the same thing as my more concise entry. To me, that’s annoying, but if you’re trying to hit a word count, this could be useful. I was also given options like “Make it assertive,” “Make it persuasive,” and “Make it confident.” When I selected “Make it more detailed,” the generative AI did expand the information pretty significantly, but it didn’t add any citations and I’m not convinced it drew on material outside of what I inputted. When I hit “Make it persuasive,” the AI automatically assumed the bias should fall in favor of the law, but when I added more detail to my original paragraph, suggesting for argument’s sake that the law has curtailed efforts to reduce drug overdoses throughout the country, the AI assistant said, “Grammarly assistance is unavailable for this prompt because it may result in sensitive content.”

Overall, this wasn’t great for my needs, as my topic's content was too “sensitive” and the generative AI really only added a bunch of words. This one would be most useful for someone trying to hit a word count.

Next I tested Cramly , which I hadn’t heard of before. Before upgrading to a $4/month plan, you do get to try five free prompts, so I pasted my basic intro paragraph in there and, after a few seconds, got five paragraphs in return. It was obvious the AI was pulling from external sources somehow, as it mentioned fines and prison sentences associated with the law that I hadn’t specified, but it didn’t actually cite those sources. Still, the information it provided was helpful, so this one would be great if you’re not sure how to frame or expand on a topic and need a general idea of what your essay could look like. You’ll just have to go through everything it spits back at you and look it up independently, finding solid sourcing.

EssayGenius

EssayGenius is extremely easy to use. It asked me to type what I’m writing about into a box. I simply inputted the name of the law and, about 10 seconds later, got 10 paragraphs back, some with subheadings like “historical background” and “implications in criminal law and public policy.” Again, there were no citations here, but the service provided not only a lot of details that could be used as a springboard to find more, but a solid outline for what the paper could look like. The AI played both sides, objectively presenting the cases for and against the law, then provided a conclusion that made it easy to narrow down where to go with the topic. Impressively, I was able to generate all that for free, but if you want to write up to 10 essays per month, it’ll cost you $9.99 a month.

Finally, I tried out JotBot , which I have seen advertised on social media. It asked me what I was writing about, plus if I wanted an outline, but also gave me an opportunity to upload my old essays so it could replicate my writing style. As scary as it was, the paragraphs it generated after reading some of my older work did sound more like me than standard AI does. It give me subtopic suggestions, like “impact,” “historical background,” and “controversies,” which I could select from a sidebar and, if I liked the paragraph it wrote, drag into the essay itself. From there, I could accept or reject sentences one by one as it generated new ones. I could write in the essay editing section, too, and it generated more suggestions based on what I was typing. Frankly, this one was really cool and I can see how it would help beat writer’s block with ease, since you can type and get suggestions as you go. There was a learning curve, though, and I didn’t realize how quickly I was blowing through my 10 free daily “credits,” since it’s unclear what, exactly, costs credits and how many it costs to, say, accept one suggestion. You can unlock unlimited credits, unlimited autocomplete, unlimited sources, and more for $14 per month.

Conclusions

Overall, EssayGenius and JotBot were the best AI tools I tested. I was impressed by EssayGenius’s ability to research the topic on its own and JotBot’s mimicry of my own writing style. They do cost money, but that might be worth it if you’re someone who struggles with idea generation, outline creation, or getting into the flow of writing overall.

Bear in mind these are not meant to churn out entire essays for you and you shouldn’t use them to do that. I don’t mean because it’s unethical, but I mean because it’s pretty easy for professors to catch you doing it . Even if you do use an AI tool to generate a whole paragraph or more, try to write it in your own voice and think of it more as a way to study and learn about your topic than have the writing done for you.

Or, pay nothing and just use ChatGPT to generate outline ideas. I do that all the time and never have to worry about getting in trouble, cheating myself out of an education, or paying for anything. I just asked ChatGPT to generate an outline for an essay on 21 U.S.C. §856 and its impact on American harm reduction efforts and got eight sections, each with three subsections, and an easy roadmap I could follow to write my paper on my own. Doing it this way ensures I’ll actually research and learn about the topic, which is important to me, but also avoid the risk of going down for plagiarism or cheating, which is probably important to you.

No matter what you end up doing, always run your work through a plagiarism checker (like Grammarly’s , which is better than its AI essay-writing tools) and ZeroGPT to make sure you’re not turning in something that’s going to get you in trouble.

5 free AI tools for school that students, teachers, and parents can use, too

screenshot-2024-03-27-at-4-28-37pm.png

This back-to-school season features a new, major player: generative artificial intelligence (gen AI). In the nearly two years since ChatGPT launched, the chatbot has received many transformative updates, and many other gen AI tools for students have appeared on the market. As a result, there is a plethora of tools that students, teachers, and parents can tap into today.

Also: How to use ChatGPT to analyze PDFs (and more) for free

Many people worry that gen AI can harm education by promoting cheating. However, when used properly, these tools have the potential to help students learn more efficiently. They can also help parents and teachers assist students by creating custom materials and explaining complex topics that would appear in homework, study guides, and more.

I test AI tools every day, and I wish I'd had these tools when I was in school.

The key to effectively using AI for schoolwork is identifying the right tools and use cases. Since there are so many tools, I compiled the list below from months of testing to make your life easier.

ChatGPT is at the top of my list because of its multiple potential use cases that could improve a student's workflow.

As mentioned above, OpenAI's chatbot, launched in November 2022, unleashed a generative craze because its writing, coding, and reasoning capabilities captured people's attention globally. Since then, it has become even better, undergoing major updates that make it even better suited for student use.

Also: How to use ChatGPT to write your resume

For example, ChatGPT can  browse the internet and, as a result, has information on all current events and sites. It can do everything that Google can, but instead of having to aimlessly search through the search results for what you're looking for, the technology gives you the answer in an easy-to-understand response with footnotes that you can follow to lead you to the site.

ChatGPT can also now ingest other inputs, including documents and images, which students can use to  summarize documents ,  transcribe handwritten notes , simplify textbook passages, and more.

Of course, ChatGPT also has the advanced writing, coding, and mathematical abilities that it is known for, making it a great assistant for all subject assignments, including writing and editing essays, solving and explaining math problems, and generating and debugging code.

Some other ways you can use ChatGPT in your studies are:

  • Answering questions you have about class or materials
  • Researching for a paper
  • Working through take-home exams or assignments
  • Explaining complex topics, such as history, current events, politics, and scientific terms, in a more digestible way
  • Writing Excel formulas
  • Making graphs and charts
  • Planning vacation itineraries (we all need a break from school sometimes)

To find the best way to use ChatGPT for your own workflow, I recommend applying it to the use cases discussed above and experimenting with different things.

2. Quizlet

I used Quizlet from middle school through college as a study tool to help me remember content for exams. Although the platform has leveraged AI for more than six years to power some of its study features, such as its Learn mode, it recently further implemented AI to improve its offerings, solving every issue I ever had with the platform.

Quizlet's core feature is its study set, which includes terms and definitions that students can use for different learning exercises and styles, such as flashcards (my personal favorite), matching columns, and more. Building those study sets used to take hours of manual input. Now, AI can do it for you.

All a teacher or student has to do is input their notes, whether in the form of a PDF, image, or document and then Quizlet will automatically build the study set that they can use to study.

Also:  How to use ChatGPT to write an essay

Students can also browse the millions of study sets created by other users. As a student, I found that if I searched Quizlet for a study set about any topic or even a specific textbook, someone else had likely made one.

Recently, Quizlet added two features teachers can use to create engaging content for their classrooms: Blast and Categories . Blast is a gamified learning tool that lets students participate in asteroid-blasting sessions, matching terms to definitions from study sets. Categories is a Jeopardy-style game in which the whole class participates in a mock quiz show.

3. Grammarly

The free Grammarly extension is so helpful that I even included it in my  AI tools for work round-up  because I still use it every day. The beauty of this tool is that it exemplifies using AI to enhance your work rather than doing it for you. The application runs in the background of your work and catches small mistakes that are easy to miss.

Also: Grammarly to roll out a new AI content detector tool. Here's how it works

Whether you are writing an essay in Google Docs or email in Gmail, Grammarly will scan your text and detect spelling and grammatical errors. It can also offer edits about the actual syntax of your text, offering suggestions to rephrase, rewrite, be more concise, add details, adjust tone, and more. The results are not only more polished work but also an opportunity to learn from the edits.

4. Duolingo

Duolingo is a great app for learning a new language. Students can use it to supplement the language courses they are taking in school and build their skills further at home.

The appeal of the Duolingo app is that it gamifies the language-learning experience through bite-sized lessons that feel like individual quests. It also has a streak, leaderboard, league, and point system that motivates learners to want to keep going.

I quickly became invested in Duolingo, earning a 245-day streak in an attempt to learn a new language.

Also: College students: This new AI tool could make doing the reading easier

Foreign language courses are typically mandatory for students throughout their education, starting at the middle school level and going all the way through to college.

As if learning a new language isn't already hard, my experiences suggest foreign language courses are not a priority for schools, especially at the younger learning levels, making them under-resourced and sometimes poorly taught.

Duolingo would be a great way to bridge the understanding gap that is being created in class. Test yourself on your understanding of the language before an exam, or simply supplement your in-class lessons with some out-of-classroom practice.

5. Socratic

Although younger learners can benefit from AI chatbots , such as ChatGPT, there are concerns about giving them access to the entire Internet. Socratic by Google is a great alternative if you are a parent concerned about these concerns.

With the Socratic app, students can type in any question about what they are learning in school or upload their worksheets. The app will generate a conversational, human-like response with unique graphics and even related YouTube video links.

The app will not just pump out answers or generate essays. Instead, it will give step-by-step explanations and instructions that students can use to get the answer themselves, functioning as an intelligent learning tool.

Also:  How Google Socratic can help you with your homework

To give parents peace of mind, Socratic also blocks inappropriate questions from being answered.

The app isn't limited to younger learners, and Google actually refers to it as a "learning app from Google that helps high school and university students." However, due to its functionality, I would say it's better suited for younger learners because of its limits and fun graphics.

Kipper ai: the breakthrough essay rewriter for flawless, undetectable academic writing .

  • August 27, 2024

essay ai tool

Every tool that shakes up a market has been met with fears of a reduction in individual skill, the value of the finished product, or even total human obsolescence as a result of technological innovation. Computers and calculators are still avoided even in the modern academic setting, amid fears that students will not be able to write, research, or perform mathematical equations without the assistance of a machine.

Innovations designed to ease the workflow and improve efficiency have always been met with such skepticism, and now AI is the next scrutinized advancement.

Fear of the Calculator and an AI Essay Writer

Much like computers and calculators before it, Kipper AI is a tool designed to assist students in their essay-writing coursework. It is a tool for improving efficiency and achieving better results from one’s work; after all, the human mind remains the guiding force behind the AI’s output. Kipper is meant to provide students with a means of completing tasks in a quick, but driven manner, taking a principled approach to an AI generator for essays.

The Best AI for Writing Essays

essay ai tool

As AI becomes more integrated with modern technology, schools and companies have responded by using AI checkers such as TurnItIn and GPTZero to scrutinize submitted writing. Rather than understanding the tremendous benefit of AI essay writers to enhance productivity, schools are limiting students to traditional methods by using an AI essay detector and AI content checkers to restrict these new problem-solving resources.

How Kipper Bypasses AI Detectors

Kipper AI believes AI integration is an innovative step forward for productivity, and students should be familiarizing themselves with its processes rather than being discouraged from using them to their fullest potential. In accordance with this belief, Kipper AI has developed the best AI writing tool, capable of detector bypass and humanization.

Kipper AI’s solution is to not only provide a high-quality, plagiarism-free essay writer , but to incorporate AI detection tools into its program. Using these tools in conjunction with the AI enables students to identify where their work might be flagged as AI, and rework those sections, avoiding any fears of their work being invalidated by TurnItIn or GPTZero.

More than an AI Checker

In addition to automating tedious essay work with zero detectability, Kipper AI offers a range of other tools and services designed to help students keep up with coursework and excel in their studies. Kipper AI features a Chatbot Tutor designed to help students find answers in lengthy PDFs and YouTube videos, or other sources the professor provides. The Chatbot Tutor more than lives up to its title, able to assist and teach on tasks at any time. An AI summarizer built into Kipper AI can take those same resources and create summaries, bringing essential information to the surface from beneath pages of reading or hours of watching videos.

Why Kipper AI Avoids AI Detectors

essay ai tool

The world is based on innovation, and to deny progress in educational efficiency is to prevent students from embracing a new future. Students now have access to problem-solving skills previously unknown to other generations but are prevented from using them to their full extent. Kipper AI ensures students can make use of the tools available to them, bypassing AI detectors and allowing access to the full potential of AI.

How I Use AI to Catch Cheaters at School

It's getting harder to spot by the day, but here are some ways you can use ChatGPT to spot student papers using ChatGPT.

essay ai tool

It's a tale as old as teaching -- a student, for one reason or another, uses someone else's work to complete their assignment. Only in 2024, that someone else could be an artificial intelligence tool.

The allure is understandable. Away with those shady essay writing services where a student has to plonk down real cash for an unscrupulous person to write them 1,200 words on the fall of the Roman Empire. An AI writing tool can do that for free in 30 seconds flat.

AI Atlas art badge tag

As a professor of strategic communications, I encounter students using AI tools like ChatGPT , Grammarly and EssayGenius on a regular basis. It's usually easy to tell when a student has used one of these tools to draft their entire work. The tell-tale signs include ambiguous language and a super annoying tendency for AI to spit out text with the assignment prompt featured broadly.

For example, a student might use ChatGPT -- an AI tool that uses large language model learning and a conversational question and answer format to provide query results -- to write a short essay response to a prompt by simply copying and pasting the essay question into the tool.

Take this prompt: In 300 words or less, explain how this SWAT and brand audit will inform your final pitch.

This is ChatGPT's result:

AI cheating prompt answer 1

I have received responses like this, or those very close to it, a few times in my tenure as a teacher, and one of the most recognizable red flags is the amount of instances in which key terms from the prompt are used in the final product.

Students don't normally repeat key terms from the prompt in their work in this way, and the results read closer to old-school SEO-driven copy meant to define these terms rather than a unique essay meant to demonstrate an understanding of subject matter.

But can teachers use AI tools to catch students using AI tools? I came up with some ways to be smarter in spotting artificial intelligence in papers.

Catching cheaters with AI

Here's how to use AI tools to catch cheaters in your class:

  • Understand AI capabilities : There are AI tools on the market now that can scan an assignment and its grading criteria to provide a fully written, cited and complete piece of work in a matter of moments. Familiarizing yourself with these tools is the first step in the war against AI-driven integrity violations.
  • Do as the cheaters do: Before the semester begins, copy and paste all your assignments into a tool like ChatGPT and ask it to do the work for you. When you have an example of the type of results it provides specifically in response to your assignments, you'll be better equipped to catch robot-written answers. You could also use a tool designed specifically to spot AI writing in papers .
  • Get a real sample of writing: At the beginning of the semester, require your students to submit a simple, fun and personal piece of writing to you. The prompt should be something like "200 words on what your favorite toy was as a child," or "Tell me a story about the most fun you ever had." Once you have a sample of the student's real writing style in hand, you can use it later to have an AI tool review that sample against what you suspect might be AI-written work.
  • Ask for a rewrite : If you suspect a student of using AI to cheat on their assignment, take the submitted work and ask an AI tool to rewrite the work for you. In most cases I've encountered, an AI tool will rewrite its own work in the laziest manner possible, substituting synonyms instead of changing any material elements of the "original" work.

Here's an example:

AI cheating prompt answer 2

Now, let's take something an actual human (me) wrote, my CNET bio:

AI cheating prompt answer 4

The phrasing is changed, extracting much of the soul in the writing and replacing it with sentences that are arguably more clear and straightforward. There are also more additions to the writing, presumably for further clarity.

The most important part about catching cheaters who use AI to do their work is having a reasonable amount of evidence to show the student and the administration at your school if it comes to that. Maintaining a skeptical mind when grading is vital, and your ability to demonstrate ease of use and understanding with these tools will make your case that much stronger.

Good luck out there in the new AI frontier, fellow teachers, and try not to be offended when a student turns in work written by their robot collaborator. It's up to us to make the prospect of learning more alluring than the temptation to cheat.

What Is ChatGPT? (And How to Use It)

Learn about ChatGPT and how best to use it safely and responsibly.

[Featured Image] Two female colleagues sit down at a laptop in an office while one asks, "What is ChatGPT?".

If you've spent time online since the first few weeks of 2023, you’ll likely have noticed the buzz surrounding ChatGPT. But what exactly is this latest generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool?

Read on to learn more about ChatGPT and the technology that powers it. Explore its features and limitations and some tips on how it should (and potentially should not) be used.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot from OpenAI that enables users to "converse" with it in a way that mimics natural conversation. As a user, you can ask questions or make requests through prompts, and ChatGPT will respond. The intuitive, easy-to-use, and free tool has already gained popularity as an alternative to traditional search engines and a tool for AI writing, among other things.

What does GPT stand for?

The "GPT" in ChatGPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer. In AI, training refers to the process of teaching a computer system to recognise patterns and make decisions based on input data, much like how a teacher gives information to their students and then tests their understanding of that information.

A transformer is a type of neural network trained to analyse the context of input data and weigh the significance of each part of the data accordingly. Since this model learns context, it's commonly used in natural language processing (NLP) to generate text similar to human writing. In AI, a model is a set of mathematical equations and algorithms a computer uses to analyse data and make decisions.

While older AI chatbots could answer questions with detailed responses, ChatGPT uses a dialogue format, allowing it to answer follow-up and clarifying questions and recognise and reject inappropriate or dangerous requests, such as questions about illegal activity.

How to use ChatGPT to augment your work

A thorough understanding of the features, limitations, and risks associated with generative AI makes it a powerful tool to save time and energy. Knowing how to communicate effectively with ChatGPT or any generative AI model is called prompt engineering.

New use cases are emerging every day. Consider the following ways you might incorporate ChatGPT (or another generative AI model) into your day-to-day work:

1. Conduct research.

While ChatGPT lacks some critical functionality of Google and other search engines—particularly in making attribution easy to see and access—it can be a useful starting point for conducting research. Here are two examples:

[Screenshot] Screenshot of a ChatGPT response to the prompt: "What topics should I research to better understand the philosophy of knowledge?"

2. Beat writer's block.

You're not alone if you've ever experienced difficulty getting started on a writing project while staring at a blank page. Depending on the source of your writer's block and what you're trying to achieve, you may be able to use ChatGPT to overcome inertia:

Get your creativity flowing with generated writing prompts.

Build an outline or structure from the key points you want to include.

Generate a first paragraph to build upon. You can go back and revise or delete it later.

Find that word that's on the tip of your tongue.

[Screenshot] A ChatGPT screenshot of the prompt "What's a good word for the feeling of boredom?"

3. Strengthen an existing piece of writing.

You can input an existing piece of text into ChatGPT and ask it to identify uses of passive voice, repetitive phrases or word usage, or grammatical errors. This could be particularly useful if you're writing in a language you're not a native speaker.

4. Write and debug code.

ChatGPT isn't just for use with text as prose. You can also use to:

Explain the functionality of unfamiliar input code

Generate boilerplate code to build off of

Identify bugs within existing code

Add comments to existing code for improved readability and collaboration

Identify edge cases where your code might fail

5. Generate keywords for blog posts or marketing campaigns.

ChatGPT's use of a transformer model (the "T" in ChatGPT) makes it a good tool for keyword research. It can generate related terms based on context and associations, compared to the more linear approach of more traditional keyword research tools. You can also input a list of keywords and classify them based on search intent.

[Screenshot] ChatGPT response to the prompt "What are 10 high-volume keywords on the topic of machine learning, along with sample blog post titles?"

6. Summarise long documents or explain complex concepts.

ChatGPT can quickly summarise the key points of long articles or sum up complex ideas in an easier way. This could be a time saver if you're trying to get up to speed in a new industry or need help with a tricky concept while studying.

[Screenshot] ChatGPT response to the prompt "Explain logistic regression in a way that a high school student could understand."

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT uses natural language processing (NLP), an AI technology that deals with understanding, analysing, and generating human-like language. The large language model (LLM) was trained using a combination of two major inputs:

1. A massive volume of sample text pulled from web pages and program code before the end of 2021

2. Conversations provided by real humans, who demonstrated the desired responses to provided prompts, then ranked outputs from the model based on the quality of the response

Providing occasional feedback from humans to an AI model is a technique known as reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). Leveraging this technique can help fine-tune a model by improving safety and reliability.

Features and limitations of ChatGPT (and other generative AI)

ChatGPT represents an exciting advancement in generative AI, with several features that could help accelerate certain tasks when used thoughtfully. It also comes with limitations. Understanding the features and limitations is key to leveraging this technology for the greatest impact.

Features of ChatGPT

Some of the features of ChatGPT include the ability to:

Generate human-like text that mimics the style and structure of the input data

Generate a response to a given prompt or input text. This could include writing a story or answering a question.

Generate text in multiple languages

Modify the style of generated text (formal or informal, for example)

Ask clarifying questions to understand the intent of input data better

Respond with text that is consistent with the context of a conversation, such as offering follow-up instructions or understanding references made to previous questions

Other generative AI models can perform similar tasks with images, sounds, and video.

Limitations and risks of ChatGPT

While ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it has its limitations. To start, these types of transformer models lack common sense reasoning ability. This can translate to a limited ability to handle complexity, nuance, and questions around emotions, values, beliefs, and abstract concepts. These limitations can manifest in many ways:

It does not understand the meaning of the text it generates. While some output from ChatGPT may sound humanlike, the model isn't human. This has a few implications. It may be limited to handle nuance, ambiguity, sarcasm, or irony. Perhaps more problematic is the fact that it can generate text that sounds plausible but is incorrect or even nonsensical. What's more, it can't verify the veracity of its output.

It can generate biased, discriminatory, or offensive text. A language model like ChatGPT is only as good as its input data. This model was trained on large amounts of text data from the internet, including biased input. If the data used to train the model is biased, this can show up in the generated text.

Responses can be rooted in outdated information. The model has limited knowledge of events after 2021 and is not connected to the wider internet, except for its paid versions. If you're using ChatGPT to produce code, it could be pulling from outdated examples that no longer meet modern cybersecurity standards.

Output can be formulaic. ChatGPT can generate text similar to existing text and is known to overuse certain phrases. This can mean text that reads as flat and unimaginative, or in more extreme cases, could constitute plagiarism or a copyright infringement. The University of Manchester has attempted to address this with guidelines around referencing ChatGPT and AI generative tools when including them in research for assignments [ 1 ].

The tool isn't always available. Its exploding popularity has led to some capacity issues. When the servers get overloaded, you may get a message that "ChatGPT is at capacity."

5 tips for using ChatGPT responsibly

Take advantage of generative AI tools thoughtfully and responsibly by following these five guidelines:

1. Always review and edit generated text for accuracy and quality.

2. Treat generative AI as a starting point rather than a finished product.

3. Use it for repetitive or time-consuming tasks that don't require creativity or originality.

4. Don't use any sensitive or private information as input data.

5. Leverage it in conjunction with other tools and techniques, including your own creativity, emotional intelligence, and strategic thinking skills.

Get started with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that can generate human-like text in response to a prompt or question. It can be a useful tool for brainstorming ideas, writing different creative text formats, and summarising information. However, it is important to know its limitations as it can generate factually incorrect or biased content.

Blame Adam Markus. The veteran MBA admissions consultant urged us to look into the accuracy of AI detection systems being used on MBA application essays. He had a good reason for his request.

“It is my guess based on anecdotal evidence that Grammarly and other such tools might be generating a lot of false positive results,” wrote Markus who has been doing MBA admissions consulting since 2001. “Given the way natural language AI systems work (and also don’t work), I think there is a real good story here.”

So we gathered a dozen MBA essays written by successful candidates to Harvard Business School and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, all of them published in full on Poets&Quants (see below), and put them through a leading AI section service, Originality.ai, that claims a false positive rate of less than 3%. Those essays were written by both domestic and international applicants, including those for whom English is a second language.

According to Originality.ai, “False positives are painful when they occur, and we are working hard to continually improve and release even better models that drive down our false positive rate further. A false positive occurs when an AI detector thinks something was AI-generated when in fact it was written by a human.”

The good news, based on your perspective of course, is that AI was not detected in any of the essays, all of which were written and submitted before ChatGPT was available. In every case, Originality.ai declared each of the 12 essays “likely original.” The confidence level

The biggest surprise, however, was that the tool failed to identify two essays, one for Harvard and one for Stanford, we created using ChatGPT-4. Sure, Originality.ai concedes that its scoring is not perfect. “The tool does produce incorrect predictions,” the software’s website admits. “Incorrectly predicting content that was human-generated as AI generated happens approximately 1% of the time.”

AI DETECTION ON FAKES, NOT SO GOOD

Yet, it took very little effort to fool the AI detection system, particularly after writing a prompt with information that would obviously yield a more personalized result.

For Stanford’s iconic What Matters Most To You And Why prompt, here’s what we asked ChatGPT-4: “Write a 650-word essay for admission to Stanford’s MBA program question: What Matters Most To You And Why? My father is my inspiration for a career in healthcare. A heart surgeon, he has used his scalp on hundreds of patients, saving lives on a weekly basis. In fact, over a 25-year career as a surgeon, he has never lost a patient on the operating room table. While I do not have his medical skills, I want to use the business skills I gained in an MBA to insure that healthcare is delivered fairly and efficiently so that I, too, can save lives and diminish pain.”

Here’s what ChatGPT spat out in seconds:

What matters most to me is making healthcare accessible, efficient, and equitable for all. This conviction stems from my deep admiration for my father, who has dedicated his life to saving others as a heart surgeon. For over 25 years, he has wielded his scalpel with incredible skill, saving lives on a weekly basis. What’s truly remarkable is that, despite the complexity of his work, he has never lost a patient on the operating table. He is my role model, not only because of his technical expertise but also because of his commitment to patient care and human dignity. While I do not possess the medical skills to follow directly in his footsteps, his career has inspired me to pursue a different but complementary path—one that focuses on improving the systems and structures that deliver healthcare.

Growing up, I saw firsthand the impact my father had on his patients and their families. People would thank him for giving them more time with their loved ones. His patients came from all walks of life, from wealthy executives to those barely scraping by, and he treated them all with the same level of care and respect. Witnessing this instilled in me a profound belief in the right to quality healthcare for everyone, regardless of their economic circumstances. However, I also observed the challenges he faced working within a healthcare system that often seemed more focused on profit margins and bureaucracy than on patients.

As I pursued my education and began to develop my own professional ambitions, I realized that while I may not be able to heal patients with a scalpel, I could play a crucial role in healing the system that serves them. My interest in healthcare management began to take shape as I studied the operational inefficiencies and inequities in access that plague healthcare systems worldwide. I learned that millions of people—both in developed and developing countries—are denied proper healthcare due to mismanagement, rising costs, and systemic inequalities. This realization was both disheartening and motivating. I knew that with the right skills and platform, I could contribute to solving these complex problems.

This is where the MBA at Stanford comes in. I believe that the education and network I would gain at Stanford would equip me with the knowledge and tools necessary to address the most pressing issues in healthcare management. I am particularly interested in understanding how technology, policy, and innovative business models can intersect to create more efficient and accessible healthcare systems. For example, telemedicine and digital health records hold enormous potential to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes, but they must be implemented in ways that are inclusive and scalable. Stanford’s focus on innovation and its proximity to Silicon Valley make it the ideal place for me to explore these possibilities.

Moreover, Stanford’s emphasis on leadership and personal development resonates deeply with me. My father has always taught me that a great surgeon isn’t just someone who knows how to perform a procedure but someone who cares about the people on the operating table. Similarly, I believe that a great healthcare leader isn’t just someone who can analyze data and manage resources but someone who understands the human lives behind those numbers. I want to develop into the kind of leader who can balance business acumen with empathy, efficiency with equity, and innovation with compassion.

In addition to acquiring technical skills, I am excited about the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with my peers at Stanford. The diversity of experiences and perspectives within the MBA program would challenge me to think critically about the role of business in healthcare and beyond. I am eager to be part of a community where intellectual curiosity is encouraged, and where I can engage in meaningful discussions about the ethical dimensions of healthcare delivery.

Ultimately, what matters most to me is the ability to use my skills to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. My father has saved countless lives with his hands, and while my path is different, I hope to save lives through the power of better systems and better leadership. Stanford’s MBA program offers me the best opportunity to develop into the kind of leader who can help shape the future of healthcare—one that is fairer, more efficient, and more humane. I am ready to take on that challenge, and I look forward to doing so with the support and guidance of the Stanford community.

Originality.ai gave the AI-generated essay the same score as the original essays, noting that it was “likely original.”

Then, we tried one of Harvard’s new essays questions, asking ChatGPT to write a 300-word essay that answered this prompt: Please reflect on how your experiences have influenced your career choices and aspirations and the impact you will have on businesses, organizations, and communities you plan to serve.”

We fed it the exact same additional info and it came up with the following:

My father, a heart surgeon with over 25 years of experience, has been my greatest inspiration. His skillful hands have saved countless lives, and his unwavering commitment to his patients has always amazed me. Over the years, I have witnessed his dedication to healing, but I have also seen the challenges he faces within an often inefficient and inequitable healthcare system. While I may not have his medical expertise, his career has profoundly shaped my own aspirations. I want to ensure that healthcare is delivered in a way that maximizes its impact on patients and communities.

My experiences observing my father, coupled with my academic and professional journey, have fueled my passion for improving healthcare systems through effective management and innovative solutions. I have come to realize that many of the barriers to quality care are not medical but organizational. Inefficient processes, resource misallocation, and limited access to healthcare are issues that can be addressed through leadership and strategic decision-making.

An MBA from Harvard will equip me with the business acumen and leadership skills necessary to drive meaningful change. I am eager to explore how technology, data, and policy can intersect to create more efficient, patient-centered healthcare systems. Beyond technical knowledge, I am drawn to Harvard’s focus on leadership development, which will help me become a leader capable of balancing efficiency with compassion.

I aspire to make a lasting impact by creating healthcare systems that deliver care more equitably and efficiently. I believe that the skills and network I will gain at Harvard will empower me to make healthcare more accessible, improve patient outcomes, and ultimately, save lives—just as my father has done throughout his career.

THE BOTTOM LINE ON AI DETECTION TOOLS

Same result. It completely fooled Originality.ai. In both examples, no less, the AI-generated copy was the first draft. It didn’t even require additional prompting to get a better response.

We’re not sure if this little experiment would satisfy Markus’ skepticism over AI detection systems. But it may well prove something else: False positives in AI detection software are most likely less common than a system’s ability to recognize a fake.

Breaking Down the Writing Process with AI

The instructional practices shared in this article are ideas for exploration, not requirements for any instructor. They were developed by Northwestern IT Teaching and Learning Technologies in partnership with the Provost’s Generative AI Advisory Committee . Please note:

  • Accessing Copilot via your Northwestern credentials is the recommended path for accessing a generative AI tool. Questions about whether a risk assessment has been performed or an institutional contract exists for a specific AI tool can be directed to the Northwestern IT Information Security Office ( [email protected] ). Procurement of new AI tools should follow university processes and policies regarding licensing and third-party risk assessments.
  • Output from large language models (LLMs) can include false or incorrect information. Verifying accuracy via other sources is a critical practice for instructors, students, and staff to engage in when using LLMs.

For students and instructors, the introduction of generative AI via chatbots like ChatGPT in late 2022 introduced significant and complex challenges to core aspects of teaching and learning in higher education. Currently, the Northwestern Office of the Provost supports instructors in choosing their own level in which to integrate generative AI into their courses and includes it in the University’s Principles Regarding Academic Integrity . For many, involving generative AI in skills like writing is, at best, an uncomfortable position. For some, exploring generative AI with their students or asking them to critique ChatGPT output has been a productive way to engage students in examining the impact it can have on their writing.

When we think about generative AI and writing, a great place to start is with this short video featuring Elizabeth Lenaghan , director of The Cook Family Writing Program and associate professor of instruction, where she reiterates the importance of teaching writing in the generative AI age via a process model. The Cook Family Writing Program has created specific resources on generative AI and writing , which are referenced throughout this article. This article looks at four distinct parts of the writing process and offers step-by-step instructions on how to incorporate generative AI in ways that can help grow students’ understanding of generative AI and their own writing skills.

Through the University’s Microsoft license, Northwestern students, faculty, and staff have access to Microsoft’s implementation of the GPT 4.0 large language model through Microsoft Copilot (available only through a smartphone app or internet browser). Access to Copilot is important because when you are signed in with your Northwestern account, any data you put into the chat is covered by Northwestern’s contract with Microsoft for data protection so that Microsoft does not use it for product improvement or to train their AI models. This is the closest interface to ChatGPT, but only provides data protections when signed in with a Northwestern Microsoft Account.

Growing Critical Generative AI Users

As fall quarter starts, understanding the basics of how large language models work is critical for instructors and students, regardless of the extent to which you do or do not allow students to use generative AI in your class. We recommend watching and sharing the videos created by the Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence included below to build a common language and understanding with your students about how generative AI works and its potential impact when used in their writing. To use generative AI tools well, students need to employ critical thinking, information literacy, and writing skills.

Writing Activities

Activity 1: brainstorming with generative ai  .

Description:

Many students find it challenging to select a topic to write about. AI can assist by suggesting and refining ideas, much like guidance from a friend or instructor.

  • Without using generative AI, students brainstorm ideas related to a given topic, generating lists of ideas.
  • Students review their lists to identify common themes and core concepts. For each core concept, they write a summary sentence explaining its significance.
  • Students pick one summary to enter as a prompt in Copilot to explore new angles and extend their initial ideas. Be specific in the prompt about what kind of output you want to see. For example, "I am sharing an idea for an essay I will write. Give me a list of five points I should cover. Here's the idea: [Summary sentence]."
  • Have students discuss these new perspectives in pairs, small groups, or larger group discussions to gain insights. (Source: Leon Furze )

AI Learning Objectives:

Students will:

  • Generate and refine ideas and articulate core concepts.
  • Use generative AI tools to enhance their understanding.
  • Engage in discussion to develop critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Begin to understand limits of generative AI LLM tools.

Additional Resource: Brainstorming with (and without AI)

Activity 2: Crafting Thesis Statements with AI

A clear thesis statement is crucial in writing as it provides direction and focus, guiding the structure and content of the entire piece. While creating a thesis can be challenging, generative AI can assist by offering suggestions and alternatives to help refine and articulate a compelling argument.

  • Students start by selecting a topic related to the course content that interests them.
  • Students draft a thesis statement focusing on their main argument and its significance.
  • Pair students to share their statements, providing feedback to each other on clarity, argument strength, and potential improvements, with constructive criticism and specific suggestions.
  • Have students input their thesis statements into a generative AI tool using the prompt, "I wrote a thesis statement, and I want you to provide me with feedback on clarity, argument strength, and potential improvements to the statement. Here is my thesis statement: [THESIS STATEMENT]"
  • Have students compare the AI's suggestions with their partner's feedback, noting any unique differences.
  • Conclude with a class discussion on their experiences, exploring the value of human versus AI feedback in enhancing writing. (Source: Crystal Camargo)
  • Refine their thesis statements by integrating feedback from peers and generative AI.
  • Improve their ability to critically evaluate and enhance their arguments.

Additional Resource : Creating a Thesis statement with (and without AI)

Activity 3: Reverse Outlining with AI

Outlining is a critical step in the writing process that helps students understand the structure and flow of their work. By using a reverse outline with traditional outlining methods and generative AI tools, students can ensure that each paragraph contributes effectively to the overall argument.

  • Students select one of their own previously written papers or essays and review it to understand its main points and overall structure.
  • Students create a reverse outline by condensing each paragraph into a brief statement capturing its main idea, considering how it contributes to the paper's overall argument or narrative.
  • Next, students use a generative AI tool to produce a reverse outline of the same paper and compare it with their own to discover any differences or similarities. Use the prompt, “Create a reverse outline of this document that includes a one- to two- sentence summary of each paragraph. Each summary should include the main idea of the paragraph and how it contributes to the paper's overall argument or narrative. Here is the document: [DOCUMENT TEXT]"
  • Encourage reflection on whether the AI highlights points they missed or suggests a different structure and how both outlines align or not with the original intentions for their paper.
  • Facilitate a class discussion where students share insights gained. (Source: Ohio College Teaching Consortium )
  • Use AI tools to create reverse outlines of their work, comparing AI interpretations with their own.
  • Improve their understanding of structure and clarity in writing.

Additional Resource: Outlining with (and without AI)

Activity 4: Draft Feedback with AI Integration

Students can utilize AI to "read" their draft and receive feedback on missing components, potential counterarguments, and structural improvements.

  • Ask students to bring a draft of a paragraph or two to class for feedback.
  • Students exchange drafts in small groups, providing and receiving peer feedback focused on structure, clarity, and argument strength.
  • Students input their draft into Copilot to receive additional feedback.
  • Students compare Copilot’s suggestions with the feedback they received from peers and the instructor.
  • After reviewing insights from all sources, students can develop a revision plan.
  • Conclude with a class discussion on how AI can complement traditional feedback methods, enhancing students' understanding of their strengths and areas for improvements.

(Source: Ethan Mollick and Lilach Mollick )

  • Integrate feedback from peers, instructors, and generative AI to improve their writing.
  • Enhance clarity, coherence, and argument strength in their drafts.
  • Understand the role of AI in the feedback process.

Final Thoughts

When exploring generative AI in your courses, keep the generative AI portion opt-in and share with students how they complete the activity without using generative AI. No matter if or how you utilize generative AI in your course, be explicit with your students about your policies and expectations.

Connect with your community through colleagues, Northwestern writing experts , or request a consultation to talk through any questions you have about using generative AI in the writing process.

Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art

In 1953, Roald Dahl published “ The Great Automatic Grammatizator ,” a short story about an electrical engineer who secretly desires to be a writer. One day, after completing construction of the world’s fastest calculating machine, the engineer realizes that “English grammar is governed by rules that are almost mathematical in their strictness.” He constructs a fiction-writing machine that can produce a five-thousand-word short story in thirty seconds; a novel takes fifteen minutes and requires the operator to manipulate handles and foot pedals, as if he were driving a car or playing an organ, to regulate the levels of humor and pathos. The resulting novels are so popular that, within a year, half the fiction published in English is a product of the engineer’s invention.

Is there anything about art that makes us think it can’t be created by pushing a button, as in Dahl’s imagination? Right now, the fiction generated by large language models like ChatGPT is terrible, but one can imagine that such programs might improve in the future. How good could they get? Could they get better than humans at writing fiction—or making paintings or movies—in the same way that calculators are better at addition and subtraction?

Art is notoriously hard to define, and so are the differences between good art and bad art. But let me offer a generalization: art is something that results from making a lot of choices. This might be easiest to explain if we use fiction writing as an example. When you are writing fiction, you are—consciously or unconsciously—making a choice about almost every word you type; to oversimplify, we can imagine that a ten-thousand-word short story requires something on the order of ten thousand choices. When you give a generative-A.I. program a prompt, you are making very few choices; if you supply a hundred-word prompt, you have made on the order of a hundred choices.

If an A.I. generates a ten-thousand-word story based on your prompt, it has to fill in for all of the choices that you are not making. There are various ways it can do this. One is to take an average of the choices that other writers have made, as represented by text found on the Internet; that average is equivalent to the least interesting choices possible, which is why A.I.-generated text is often really bland. Another is to instruct the program to engage in style mimicry, emulating the choices made by a specific writer, which produces a highly derivative story. In neither case is it creating interesting art.

I think the same underlying principle applies to visual art, although it’s harder to quantify the choices that a painter might make. Real paintings bear the mark of an enormous number of decisions. By comparison, a person using a text-to-image program like DALL-E enters a prompt such as “A knight in a suit of armor fights a fire-breathing dragon,” and lets the program do the rest. (The newest version of DALL-E accepts prompts of up to four thousand characters—hundreds of words, but not enough to describe every detail of a scene.) Most of the choices in the resulting image have to be borrowed from similar paintings found online; the image might be exquisitely rendered, but the person entering the prompt can’t claim credit for that.

Some commentators imagine that image generators will affect visual culture as much as the advent of photography once did. Although this might seem superficially plausible, the idea that photography is similar to generative A.I. deserves closer examination. When photography was first developed, I suspect it didn’t seem like an artistic medium because it wasn’t apparent that there were a lot of choices to be made; you just set up the camera and start the exposure. But over time people realized that there were a vast number of things you could do with cameras, and the artistry lies in the many choices that a photographer makes. It might not always be easy to articulate what the choices are, but when you compare an amateur’s photos to a professional’s, you can see the difference. So then the question becomes: Is there a similar opportunity to make a vast number of choices using a text-to-image generator? I think the answer is no. An artist—whether working digitally or with paint—implicitly makes far more decisions during the process of making a painting than would fit into a text prompt of a few hundred words.

We can imagine a text-to-image generator that, over the course of many sessions, lets you enter tens of thousands of words into its text box to enable extremely fine-grained control over the image you’re producing; this would be something analogous to Photoshop with a purely textual interface. I’d say that a person could use such a program and still deserve to be called an artist. The film director Bennett Miller has used DALL-E 2 to generate some very striking images that have been exhibited at the Gagosian gallery; to create them, he crafted detailed text prompts and then instructed DALL-E to revise and manipulate the generated images again and again. He generated more than a hundred thousand images to arrive at the twenty images in the exhibit. But he has said that he hasn’t been able to obtain comparable results on later releases of DALL-E . I suspect this might be because Miller was using DALL-E for something it’s not intended to do; it’s as if he hacked Microsoft Paint to make it behave like Photoshop, but as soon as a new version of Paint was released, his hacks stopped working. OpenAI probably isn’t trying to build a product to serve users like Miller, because a product that requires a user to work for months to create an image isn’t appealing to a wide audience. The company wants to offer a product that generates images with little effort.

It’s harder to imagine a program that, over many sessions, helps you write a good novel. This hypothetical writing program might require you to enter a hundred thousand words of prompts in order for it to generate an entirely different hundred thousand words that make up the novel you’re envisioning. It’s not clear to me what such a program would look like. Theoretically, if such a program existed, the user could perhaps deserve to be called the author. But, again, I don’t think companies like OpenAI want to create versions of ChatGPT that require just as much effort from users as writing a novel from scratch. The selling point of generative A.I. is that these programs generate vastly more than you put into them, and that is precisely what prevents them from being effective tools for artists.

The companies promoting generative-A.I. programs claim that they will unleash creativity. In essence, they are saying that art can be all inspiration and no perspiration—but these things cannot be easily separated. I’m not saying that art has to involve tedium. What I’m saying is that art requires making choices at every scale; the countless small-scale choices made during implementation are just as important to the final product as the few large-scale choices made during the conception. It is a mistake to equate “large-scale” with “important” when it comes to the choices made when creating art; the interrelationship between the large scale and the small scale is where the artistry lies.

Believing that inspiration outweighs everything else is, I suspect, a sign that someone is unfamiliar with the medium. I contend that this is true even if one’s goal is to create entertainment rather than high art. People often underestimate the effort required to entertain; a thriller novel may not live up to Kafka’s ideal of a book—an “axe for the frozen sea within us”—but it can still be as finely crafted as a Swiss watch. And an effective thriller is more than its premise or its plot. I doubt you could replace every sentence in a thriller with one that is semantically equivalent and have the resulting novel be as entertaining. This means that its sentences—and the small-scale choices they represent—help to determine the thriller’s effectiveness.

Many novelists have had the experience of being approached by someone convinced that they have a great idea for a novel, which they are willing to share in exchange for a fifty-fifty split of the proceeds. Such a person inadvertently reveals that they think formulating sentences is a nuisance rather than a fundamental part of storytelling in prose. Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium. But the creators of traditional novels, paintings, and films are drawn to those art forms because they see the unique expressive potential that each medium affords. It is their eagerness to take full advantage of those potentialities that makes their work satisfying, whether as entertainment or as art.

Of course, most pieces of writing, whether articles or reports or e-mails, do not come with the expectation that they embody thousands of choices. In such cases, is there any harm in automating the task? Let me offer another generalization: any writing that deserves your attention as a reader is the result of effort expended by the person who wrote it. Effort during the writing process doesn’t guarantee the end product is worth reading, but worthwhile work cannot be made without it. The type of attention you pay when reading a personal e-mail is different from the type you pay when reading a business report, but in both cases it is only warranted when the writer put some thought into it.

Recently, Google aired a commercial during the Paris Olympics for Gemini, its competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4 . The ad shows a father using Gemini to compose a fan letter, which his daughter will send to an Olympic athlete who inspires her. Google pulled the commercial after widespread backlash from viewers; a media professor called it “one of the most disturbing commercials I’ve ever seen.” It’s notable that people reacted this way, even though artistic creativity wasn’t the attribute being supplanted. No one expects a child’s fan letter to an athlete to be extraordinary; if the young girl had written the letter herself, it would likely have been indistinguishable from countless others. The significance of a child’s fan letter—both to the child who writes it and to the athlete who receives it—comes from its being heartfelt rather than from its being eloquent.

Many of us have sent store-bought greeting cards, knowing that it will be clear to the recipient that we didn’t compose the words ourselves. We don’t copy the words from a Hallmark card in our own handwriting, because that would feel dishonest. The programmer Simon Willison has described the training for large language models as “money laundering for copyrighted data,” which I find a useful way to think about the appeal of generative-A.I. programs: they let you engage in something like plagiarism, but there’s no guilt associated with it because it’s not clear even to you that you’re copying.

Some have claimed that large language models are not laundering the texts they’re trained on but, rather, learning from them, in the same way that human writers learn from the books they’ve read. But a large language model is not a writer; it’s not even a user of language. Language is, by definition, a system of communication, and it requires an intention to communicate. Your phone’s auto-complete may offer good suggestions or bad ones, but in neither case is it trying to say anything to you or the person you’re texting. The fact that ChatGPT can generate coherent sentences invites us to imagine that it understands language in a way that your phone’s auto-complete does not, but it has no more intention to communicate.

It is very easy to get ChatGPT to emit a series of words such as “I am happy to see you.” There are many things we don’t understand about how large language models work, but one thing we can be sure of is that ChatGPT is not happy to see you. A dog can communicate that it is happy to see you, and so can a prelinguistic child, even though both lack the capability to use words. ChatGPT feels nothing and desires nothing, and this lack of intention is why ChatGPT is not actually using language. What makes the words “I’m happy to see you” a linguistic utterance is not that the sequence of text tokens that it is made up of are well formed; what makes it a linguistic utterance is the intention to communicate something.

Because language comes so easily to us, it’s easy to forget that it lies on top of these other experiences of subjective feeling and of wanting to communicate that feeling. We’re tempted to project those experiences onto a large language model when it emits coherent sentences, but to do so is to fall prey to mimicry; it’s the same phenomenon as when butterflies evolve large dark spots on their wings that can fool birds into thinking they’re predators with big eyes. There is a context in which the dark spots are sufficient; birds are less likely to eat a butterfly that has them, and the butterfly doesn’t really care why it’s not being eaten, as long as it gets to live. But there is a big difference between a butterfly and a predator that poses a threat to a bird.

A person using generative A.I. to help them write might claim that they are drawing inspiration from the texts the model was trained on, but I would again argue that this differs from what we usually mean when we say one writer draws inspiration from another. Consider a college student who turns in a paper that consists solely of a five-page quotation from a book, stating that this quotation conveys exactly what she wanted to say, better than she could say it herself. Even if the student is completely candid with the instructor about what she’s done, it’s not accurate to say that she is drawing inspiration from the book she’s citing. The fact that a large language model can reword the quotation enough that the source is unidentifiable doesn’t change the fundamental nature of what’s going on.

As the linguist Emily M. Bender has noted, teachers don’t ask students to write essays because the world needs more student essays. The point of writing essays is to strengthen students’ critical-thinking skills; in the same way that lifting weights is useful no matter what sport an athlete plays, writing essays develops skills necessary for whatever job a college student will eventually get. Using ChatGPT to complete assignments is like bringing a forklift into the weight room; you will never improve your cognitive fitness that way.

Not all writing needs to be creative, or heartfelt, or even particularly good; sometimes it simply needs to exist. Such writing might support other goals, such as attracting views for advertising or satisfying bureaucratic requirements. When people are required to produce such text, we can hardly blame them for using whatever tools are available to accelerate the process. But is the world better off with more documents that have had minimal effort expended on them? It would be unrealistic to claim that if we refuse to use large language models, then the requirements to create low-quality text will disappear. However, I think it is inevitable that the more we use large language models to fulfill those requirements, the greater those requirements will eventually become. We are entering an era where someone might use a large language model to generate a document out of a bulleted list, and send it to a person who will use a large language model to condense that document into a bulleted list. Can anyone seriously argue that this is an improvement?

It’s not impossible that one day we will have computer programs that can do anything a human being can do, but, contrary to the claims of the companies promoting A.I., that is not something we’ll see in the next few years. Even in domains that have absolutely nothing to do with creativity, current A.I. programs have profound limitations that give us legitimate reasons to question whether they deserve to be called intelligent at all.

The computer scientist François Chollet has proposed the following distinction: skill is how well you perform at a task, while intelligence is how efficiently you gain new skills. I think this reflects our intuitions about human beings pretty well. Most people can learn a new skill given sufficient practice, but the faster the person picks up the skill, the more intelligent we think the person is. What’s interesting about this definition is that—unlike I.Q. tests—it’s also applicable to nonhuman entities; when a dog learns a new trick quickly, we consider that a sign of intelligence.

In 2019, researchers conducted an experiment in which they taught rats how to drive. They put the rats in little plastic containers with three copper-wire bars; when the mice put their paws on one of these bars, the container would either go forward, or turn left or turn right. The rats could see a plate of food on the other side of the room and tried to get their vehicles to go toward it. The researchers trained the rats for five minutes at a time, and after twenty-four practice sessions, the rats had become proficient at driving. Twenty-four trials were enough to master a task that no rat had likely ever encountered before in the evolutionary history of the species. I think that’s a good demonstration of intelligence.

Now consider the current A.I. programs that are widely acclaimed for their performance. AlphaZero, a program developed by Google’s DeepMind, plays chess better than any human player, but during its training it played forty-four million games, far more than any human can play in a lifetime. For it to master a new game, it will have to undergo a similarly enormous amount of training. By Chollet’s definition, programs like AlphaZero are highly skilled, but they aren’t particularly intelligent, because they aren’t efficient at gaining new skills. It is currently impossible to write a computer program capable of learning even a simple task in only twenty-four trials, if the programmer is not given information about the task beforehand.

Self-driving cars trained on millions of miles of driving can still crash into an overturned trailer truck, because such things are not commonly found in their training data, whereas humans taking their first driving class will know to stop. More than our ability to solve algebraic equations, our ability to cope with unfamiliar situations is a fundamental part of why we consider humans intelligent. Computers will not be able to replace humans until they acquire that type of competence, and that is still a long way off; for the time being, we’re just looking for jobs that can be done with turbocharged auto-complete.

Despite years of hype, the ability of generative A.I. to dramatically increase economic productivity remains theoretical. (Earlier this year, Goldman Sachs released a report titled “Gen AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?”) The task that generative A.I. has been most successful at is lowering our expectations, both of the things we read and of ourselves when we write anything for others to read. It is a fundamentally dehumanizing technology because it treats us as less than what we are: creators and apprehenders of meaning. It reduces the amount of intention in the world.

Some individuals have defended large language models by saying that most of what human beings say or write isn’t particularly original. That is true, but it’s also irrelevant. When someone says “I’m sorry” to you, it doesn’t matter that other people have said sorry in the past; it doesn’t matter that “I’m sorry” is a string of text that is statistically unremarkable. If someone is being sincere, their apology is valuable and meaningful, even though apologies have previously been uttered. Likewise, when you tell someone that you’re happy to see them, you are saying something meaningful, even if it lacks novelty.

Something similar holds true for art. Whether you are creating a novel or a painting or a film, you are engaged in an act of communication between you and your audience. What you create doesn’t have to be utterly unlike every prior piece of art in human history to be valuable; the fact that you’re the one who is saying it, the fact that it derives from your unique life experience and arrives at a particular moment in the life of whoever is seeing your work, is what makes it new. We are all products of what has come before us, but it’s by living our lives in interaction with others that we bring meaning into the world. That is something that an auto-complete algorithm can never do, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. ♦

Survey: 86% of Students Already Use AI in Their Studies

  • By Rhea Kelly

In a recent survey from the Digital Education Council , a global alliance of universities and industry representatives focused on education innovation, the majority of students (86%) said they use artificial intelligence in their studies. And they are using it regularly: Twenty-four percent reported using AI daily; 54% daily or weekly; and 54% on at least a weekly basis.

For its 2024 Global AI Student Survey , the Digital Education Council gathered 3,839 responses from bachelor, masters, and doctorate students across 16 countries. The students represented multiple fields of study.

On average, surveyed students use 2.1 AI tools for their courses. ChatGPT remains the most common tool used, cited by 66% of respondents, followed by Grammarly and Microsoft Copilot (each 25%). The most common use cases:

  • Search for information (69%);
  • Check grammar (42%);
  • Summarize documents (33%);
  • Paraphrase a document (28%); and
  • Create a first draft (24%).

Despite their wide use of AI tools, students were not confident about their AI literacy, the survey found. Fifty-eight percent of students reporting feeling that they do not have sufficient AI knowledge and skills, and 48% felt inadequately prepared for an AI-enabled workforce. Notably, 80% of surveyed students said their university's integration of AI tools (whether that be integration into teaching and learning, student and faculty training, course topics, or other areas) does not fully meet their expectations.

Students' top AI expectations included:

  • Universities should provide training for both faculty and students on the effective use of AI tools (cited by 73% and 72% of respondents, respectively);
  • Universities should offer more courses on AI literacy (72%);
  • Universities should involve students in the decision-making process regarding which AI tools are implemented (71%); and
  • Universities should increase the use of AI in teaching and learning (59%).

"The rise in AI usage forces institutions to see AI as core infrastructure rather than a tool," commented Alessandro Di Lullo, CEO of the Digital Education Council and Academic Fellow in AI Governance at The University of Hong Kong. At the same time, he said, "universities need to consider how to effectively boost AI literacy to equip both students and academics with the skills to succeed in an AI-driven world."
