Thoughts on Crimson Harvard essays?

As the title suggests, I'm wondering people's opinions on some of these essays. Although I really like some, I don't understand how some of them got into Harvard or are even posted on the website? They contradict everything I've heard about a good personal statement. Here is one of those essays. The entire thing is about his grandpa, what makes this essay good if it even is? This is on the 2022 10 accepted Harvard essays on Harvard crimson btw.

My Ye-Ye always wears a red baseball cap. I think he likes the vivid color—bright and sanguine, like himself. When Ye-Ye came from China to visit us seven years ago, he brought his red cap with him and every night for six months, it sat on the stairway railing post of my house, waiting to be loyally placed back on Ye-Ye’s head the next morning. He wore the cap everywhere: around the house, where he performed magic tricks with it to make my little brother laugh; to the corner store, where he bought me popsicles before using his hat to wipe the beads of summer sweat off my neck. Today whenever I see a red hat, I think of my Ye-Ye and his baseball cap, and I smile.

Ye-Ye is the Mandarin word for “grandfather.” My Ye-Ye is a simple, ordinary person—not rich, not “successful”—but he is my greatest source of inspiration and I idolize him. Of all the people I know, Ye-Ye has encountered the most hardship and of all the people I know, Ye-Ye is the most joyful. That these two aspects can coexist in one individual is, in my mind, truly remarkable.

Ye-Ye was an orphan. Both his parents died before he was six years old, leaving him and his older brother with no home and no family. When other children gathered to read around stoves at school, Ye-Ye and his brother walked in the bitter cold along railroad tracks, looking for used coal to sell. When other children ran home to loving parents, Ye-Ye and his brother walked along the streets looking for somewhere to sleep. Eight years later, Ye-Ye walked alone—his brother was dead.

Ye-Ye managed to survive, and in the meanwhile taught himself to read, write, and do arithmetic. Life was a blessing, he told those around him with a smile.

Years later, Ye-Ye’s job sent him to the Gobi Desert, where he and his fellow workers labored for twelve hours a day. The desert wind was merciless; it would snatch their tent in the middle of the night and leave them without supply the next morning. Every year, harsh weather took the lives of some fellow workers.

After eight years, Ye-Ye was transferred back to the city where his wife lay sick in bed. At the end of a twelve-hour workday, Ye-Ye took care of his sick wife and three young children. He sat with the children and told them about the wide, starry desert sky and mysterious desert lives. Life was a blessing, he told them with a smile.

But life was not easy; there was barely enough money to keep the family from starving. Yet, my dad and his sisters loved going with Ye-Ye to the market. He would buy them little luxuries that their mother would never indulge them in: a small bag of sunflower seeds for two cents, a candy each for three cents. Luxuries as they were, Ye-Ye bought them without hesitation. Anything that could put a smile on the children’s faces and a skip in their steps was priceless.

Ye-Ye still goes to the market today. At the age of seventy-eight, he bikes several kilometers each week to buy bags of fresh fruits and vegetables, and then bikes home to share them with his neighbors. He keeps a small patch of strawberries and an apricot tree. When the fruit is ripe, he opens his gate and invites all the children in to pick and eat. He is Ye-Ye to every child in the neighborhood.

I had always thought that I was sensible and self-aware. But nothing has made me stare as hard in the mirror as I did after learning about the cruel past that Ye-Ye had suffered and the cheerful attitude he had kept throughout those years. I thought back to all the times when I had gotten upset. My mom forgot to pick me up from the bus station. My computer crashed the day before an assignment was due. They seemed so trivial and childish, and I felt deeply ashamed of myself.

Now, whenever I encounter an obstacle that seems overwhelming, I think of Ye-Ye; I see him in his red baseball cap, smiling at me. Like a splash of cool water, his smile rouses me from grief, and reminds me how trivial my worries are and how generous life has been. Today I keep a red baseball cap at the railing post at home where Ye-Ye used to put his every night. Whenever I see the cap, I think of my Ye-Ye, smiling in his red baseball cap, and I smile. Yes, Ye-Ye. Life is a blessing.

In Photos: Dean Khurana’s 10-Year Tenure

In the email announcing his departure in June 2025 after more than a decade Harvard’s top administration, Rakesh Khurana wrote that serving as dean of the College “has been one of the greatest honors and joys of my life.”

While Khurana’s tenure was marked by backlash surrounding his efforts to combat final clubs and discipline pro-Palestine student protesters, the dean is also known by undergraduates for his frequent presence in dining halls and Harvard Yard, where he often stops students to take a selfie for his widely popular Instagram page.

Khurana, who is the longest-serving dean of Harvard College in more than a century, wrote in his email that what he will miss most “are the daily interactions I have been so privileged to have with our wonderful undergraduates.” In this photo essay, The Crimson looks back on some of the highlights of Khurana’s tenure.

Newly appointed College Dean Rakesh Khurana sits down at lunchtime to chat with freshmen in Annenberg Hall in October 2014. In a Crimson interview that year, Khurana said he spent three-fourths of his time talking to students.

Khurana speaks on behalf of protesters holding a silent demonstration during the Dec. 2014 Primal Scream , a biannual naked run around Harvard Yard. The protesters were attempting to hold a four-and-a-half minute period of silence before the run for Michael Brown of Ferguson, Mo. and Eric Garner of New York, two unarmed Black men who were killed by white police officers earlier that year. Khurana and other administrators were present, and Khurana attempted to quiet the students with a megaphone — at one point on the shoulders of a half-naked man.

As part of the 2015 Arts First festival in May, faculty members joined members of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals in a parody performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.” Above, Khurana, playing the Prince, prepares to kill the Sorcerer, played by professor Steven A. Pinker.

Khurana shares a laugh with President Joe Biden during Biden's speech at the 2017 Class Day Exercises.

“Me and the Dean in one place—it’s time to break the internet,” Biden cracked, alluding to his and Khurana’s online fame before pausing to snap a selfie with the dean.

During the 2022 Commencement Exercises, Khurana holds up a photo he took of students to ask permission to post it on his Instagram page. Khurana is known by undergraduates for frequently posting selfies with students on Instagram, which is known among the student body as the “Khuranagram.”

In November 2023, students from Harvard Hillel and Harvard Chabad assembled a roughly 200-foot Shabbat table running the length of Tercentenary Theatre as a tribute to the civilians, soldiers, and foreigners held captive by Hamas. Khurana joined gatherings at the table in the morning and afternoon, conversing with visitors and supporters, and helping students disassemble the table at sundown.

Throughout the 20-day pro-Palestine encampment in Harvard Yard during the spring semester, Khurana was a frequent visitor, leaving his office in University Hall to observe students at a distance. Above, Khurana watches protesters on the third day of the encampment as they chanted “Dean Khurana you can’t hide, you are funding genocide.”

harvard crimson essay comp

Khurana listens to speakers at the 2024 Class Day in May. Several student speakers made references to the 13 seniors barred from graduating due to their participation in the pro-Palestine encampment. Khurana was deemed responsible by some students and faculty members for the decision, which was reversed in July when the College’s Administrative Board downgraded the suspensions and probation charges of several students, paving the way for them to be granted degrees by the Harvard Corporation, the University’s highest governing body

In his own Class Day speech, Khurana largely avoided referencing the sanctions, but described the present as “a pivotal moment in history” of determining “whether an institution devoted to the pursuit of truth, veritas, can remain free from internal or external coercion.”

“We have to find common ground, and we have to remain open to changing our minds,” he said.

Correction: August 30, 2024

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the Harvard Corporation reversed the decision to prevent 13 seniors from graduating as part of the Class of 2024 in May. In fact, the decision was reversed when the Harvard College Administrative Board downgraded the disciplinary charges against students.
