தயாரிப்பு - ஆர்எஸ் இன்போடெயின்மென்ட் இயக்கம் - வெற்றிமாறன் இசை - இளையராஜா நடிப்பு - சூரி, பவானிஸ்ரீ, விஜய் சேதுபதி, கவுதம் மேனன் வெளியான தேதி - 31 மார்ச் 2023 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 30 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 4/5 அரசின் திட்டங்கள், இயற்கை வளங்களின் பாதுகாப்பு, மக்களின் எதிர்ப்பு, சில குழுக்களின் வன்முறை, காவல்துறையின் அடக்குமுறை, கடமைக்காக தங்கள் இன்னுயிரை பலி கொடுக்கும் அப்பாவிக் காவலர்கள் என தமிழ் சினிமாவில் இதற்கு முன்பும் பல கதைகள் வந்திருக்கிறது. அவற்றில் ஒரு சில கதைகள் கமர்ஷியல் படமாக மட்டுமே அடையாளம் காட்டப்பட்டன. ஆனால், விரல் விட்டு எண்ணக் கூடிய ஒரு சில படங்கள் மட்டுமே முதல் வரியில் குறிப்பிட்ட விஷயங்களை அவரவர் சார்ந்த நிலையில் ஒரு வாழ்வியலாகக் காட்டியுள்ளன. அப்படி ஒரு படத்தை இயக்குனர் வெற்றிமாறன் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். வெற்றிமாறன், இளையராஜா, சூரி, விஜய் சேதுபதி என இந்தப் படத்தில் பங்கேற்றுள்ள சில கலைஞர்களை முதலிலேயே பாராட்டாமல் இந்த விமர்சனத்தைப் பதிவு செய்யவும் முடியாது. அவரவர் பங்களிப்பில் இதுவரையிலான அவர்களது திறமையின் சிறந்த வெளிப்பாடு இந்தப் படம்.

அருமபுரி என்ற ஊருக்கு அருகில் சுரங்கம் அமைக்க அரசு திட்டமிடுகிறது. ஆனால், அந்த சுரங்கத்தை எதிர்த்து விஜய் சேதுபதி தலைமையிலான மக்கள் படை என்ற தீவிரவாதக் குழு பேராடுகிறது. ரயில் குண்டு வெடிப்பு, காவலர்களைக் கொல்வது என பலவித தீவிரவாத செயல்களில் ஈடுபடுகிறது. மக்கள் படை தலைவன் ஆன விஜய் சேதுபதி யார் என்றே அரசுக்கு தெரியாது. அவரைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கவும், அவரது படையை அழிக்கவும் பல மாதங்களாக சேத்தன் தலைமையில் ஒரு காவல் துறை அணி போராடி வருகிறது. அந்தக் குழுவில் டிரைவராக வேலைக்குச் சேரும் சூரி, ஓரிரு முறை விஜய் சேதுபதியைப் பார்க்கிறார். தனது கடமையில் ஈடுபாட்டுடன் இருக்கும் சூரி, மேலதிகாரி சேத்தன் ஆணையை மதிக்காத காரணத்தால் மெமோ கொடுக்கப்பட்டு பணித் தண்டனை கொடுக்கப்படுகிறார். காவல் துறை குழுவுக்கு புதிய அதிகாரியாக டிஎஸ்பி கவுதம் மேனன் நியமிக்கப்படுகிறார். அதன் பிறகு அந்தக் குழுவினர் விஜய் சேதுபதியைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார்களா, சூரி அதனுள் எப்படி வருகிறார் என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. படத்திற்காகத் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள காட்டுப்பகுதி, காவல்துறை குழு இருக்கும் இடம், படத்தில் கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்காகத் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள நடிகர்கள் என ஒவ்வொருவருமே குறிப்பிடும்படியான அதிகப்படியான ஈடுபாட்டைக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். தமிழ் சினிமாவில் தொடர்ந்து பலத்த விமர்சனங்களுக்குள்ளாகும் படங்களைக் கொடுத்து வரும் இயக்குனர் வெற்றிமாறன் இந்தப் படத்தையும் அப்படியே கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். வெற்றிமாறன் படத்தில் சூரி கதாநாயகனா என யோசித்தவர்கள், இந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்த பின் குமரேசன் என்ற போலீஸ் டிரைவர் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் சூரி எந்த அளவிற்குப் பொருத்தமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார் என்பதை ஆச்சரியத்துடன் பார்ப்பார்கள். ஒரு இடத்தில் கூட இதற்கு முந்தை நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் சூரியை படத்தில் பார்க்க முடியாது. மேலதிகாரியாக இருந்தாலும் தான் தவறு செய்யாத போது எதற்காக மன்னிப்பு கேட்க வேண்டும் என்ற குணம் கொண்டவர். பவானிஸ்ரீ மீது வரும் காதலில் அவருடைய காதல் நடிப்பு கூட கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கிறது. படத்தின் கடைசி அரை மணி நேரத்தில் சூரியின் நடிப்பிற்கும், ஆக்ஷனுக்கும் தியேட்டர் முழுவதும் கைத்தட்டல் கிடைப்பதே கதையின் நாயகனாக சூரிக்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள மிகப் பெரும் பாராட்டு. இந்த முதல் பாகத்தைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் விஜய் சேதுபதியைத் தேடும் குழுவிற்கு முதல் அதிகாரியாக இருக்கும் கவுதம் மேனனை விட அவருக்குக் கீழ் சிஓ--வாக பணி புரியும் சேத்தன் தனது கடுகடுப்பை அந்த அளவிற்குக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார். சூரியைப் பார்த்தாலே எரிச்சல் வருகிறது என்று சொல்லுமளவிற்கு அவரது கதாபாத்திரம் உள்ளது. டிஎஸ்பி ஆக கவுதம் மேனன், அந்தப் பதவிக்குரிய மிடுக்குடன் நடித்திருக்கிறார். இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் இவருக்கான காட்சிகள் அதிகம் இருக்கலாம் எனத் தெரிகிறது. சூரியின் ஜோடியாக மலை கிராமத்துப் பெண்ணாக பவானிஸ்ரீ. அந்தப் பார்வையும், தன் பெற்றோரைப் பறிகொடுத்த சோகத்தையும் பற்றிச் சொல்லும் போது கண்கலங்க வைக்கிறார். தலைமைச் செயலாளராக ராஜீவ்மேனன். அந்தப் பதவிக்குரிய அதிகாரத் தோரணையை அற்புதமாக வெளிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார். விஜய் சேதுபதிக்கு இந்த முதல் பாகத்தில் காட்சிகள் குறைவுதான். இடையிடையே வந்து போகிறார். கிளைமாக்சுக்கு முன்பாகக் கொஞ்சமாக வருகிறார். இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் அவருடைய காட்சிகள்தான் அதிகம் இருக்கும் எனத் தெரிகிறது. படம் முடிந்த பிறகு இரண்டாம் பாகக் காட்சிகள் சிலவற்றைக் காட்டுவதிலிருந்து அப்படி ஒரு எதிர்பார்ப்பு உள்ளது. தமிழ் சினிமாவில் 1500 படங்களுக்கும் மேல் இசையமைத்தவர் இளையராஜா. அவருடைய இசைத் திறமை என்னவென்பது பற்றி தமிழ் சினிமா ரசிகர்கள் நன்கறிவார்கள். இந்தப் படத்திற்காக தனி கவனம் செலுத்தி, உலகத் தரம் வாய்ந்த வேறொரு விதமான பின்னணி இசையைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். படத்தின் ஆரம்பக் காட்சியிலேயே நம்மை படத்துக்குள் இழுத்துக் கொண்டு செல்கிறது அவரது பின்னணி இசை. இரண்டு பாடல்களும் அப்படியே மனதோடு கலக்கிறது. தன் காதலியை போலீஸ் பிடியிலிருந்து காப்பாற்ற சூரி ஓடும் போது இளையராஜாவின் குரலில் வரும் அந்தப் பாடல் உருக வைக்கிறது. காடு, மேடு, மலை, இரவு, பகல், பனி எனக் கடந்து இயற்கையுடன் ஒன்றி ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார் வேல்ராஜ். ராமர் படத்தொகுப்பு, ஜாக்கி கலை, பீட்டர் ஹெய்ன், ஸ்டன்ட் சிவா ஆகியோரின் சண்டைக் காட்சிகள், என மற்ற தொழில்நுட்பக் குழுவினர்களும் கடுமையாய் உழைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். காவல் துறையின் விசாரணைக் காட்சிகளை மிகவும் வெளிப்படையாகக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். சென்சார் செய்யப்பட்டும் அந்தக் காட்சிகள் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது ஆச்சரியம்தான். படத்தின் ஆரம்ப ரயில் குண்டு வெடிப்புக் காட்சி நீளமாகவும், இடைவேளைக்குப் பின் கொஞ்ச நேரம் கதையோட்டம் கொஞ்சம் தடைபடுவதும் படத்தின் வேகத்தைக் குறைக்கிறது. சூரி, விஜய் சேதுபதி, பவானி ஸ்ரீ, கெளதம் மேனன், ராஜீவ் மேனன், சேத்தன், இயக்குநர் தமிழ் உள்ளிட்ட பலர் இந்தப் படத்தில் நடித்துள்ளனர்.

முதன்முறையாக வெற்றிமாறன் - இளையராஜா கூட்டணியில் உருவாகியுள்ள விடுதலை திரைப்படம், ரசிகர்களுக்கு புதுவிதமான திரை அனுபவத்தை கொடுத்துள்ளது.

சாமானிய மக்களால் அரசியலை முழுமையாக புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாது. ஆனால், அவனது மொழியையும் மரபுகளையும் அரசியல் என்னும் அதிகாரம் மூலம் சிதைக்கும் போது அவன் தன்னெழுச்சியாக கிளர்ந்து எழுவான். இந்த மையக்கரு தான் வெற்றிமாறன் இயக்கியுள்ள விடுதலை திரைப்படம். சமூகம் சார்ந்த ஒரு முக்கியமான பிரச்சினையை சினிமாவில் பேசும் போது அதன் ஒற்றை முகத்தை மட்டும் காட்டாமல், அதன் பின்னணியில் நிகழும் அரசியல், தனிமனித உளவியல், இயலாமை, எதிர்வினை என அனைத்து நுட்பங்களையும் புரியும்படி பேச வேண்டும். அதில் இந்த முறையும் வெற்றிமாறன் ஒரு படைப்பாளராக வெற்றிப் பெற்றுள்ளார்.

1987 கதைக்களம்

விடுதலை திரைப்படம் எழுத்தாளர்கள் தங்கம், ஜெயமோகன் ஆகியோரின் மூலக்கதைகளின் வழியாக உயிர்ப்பெற்றுள்ளது. படம் ஆரம்பிக்கும் போதே இப்படத்தில் வரும் கதையும் அதன் மாந்தர்களும் கற்பனையே என இயக்குநரின் குரலில் விவரிக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்தப் படத்தின் கதைக்களம் 1987- ஆம் ஆண்டு நடப்பதாக இருப்பதால், அதற்கு தேவையான அனைத்து விசயங்களையும் மிக நுணுக்கமாக பார்த்து பார்த்து செதுக்கியுள்ளது விடுதலை படக்குழு.

எளிய மக்களும் வனச் சுரண்டலும்

எளிய மக்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை சிதைத்து வனச் சுரண்டலில் ஈடுபட நினைக்கிறது அரசும், தனியார் சுரங்க நிறுவனமும். எல்லாம் திட்டமிட்டபடி நடக்கும் நேரம், ரயில் குண்டு வெடிப்பு மூலம் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவிக்கிறது ஒரு அமைப்பு. அதன் பின்னணியில் பெருமாள் வாத்தியாரும் (விஜய் சேதுபதி) அவரது தோழர்களும் இயக்குவதாக போலீஸாருக்கு தெரிய வருகிறது. காட்டுக்குள் முகாம் அமைத்து அவர்களைத் தேடி வரும் காவல்துறையில், குமரேசன் (சூரி) என்ற காவலரும் வேலை பார்க்கும் சூழல் ஏற்படுகிறது. போலீஸ் உயர் அதிகாரிகள் இதற்கு முன் பார்த்திடாத பெருமாள் வாத்தியை வெள்ளந்தியான காவலர் குமரேசனால் நெருங்க முடிகிறது. அதன் பின்னணி என்ன, இறுதியில் என்ன ஆனது? என்பது தான் விடுதலை முதல் பாகத்தின் கதை.

மக்களுக்கான அரசியல்

சுருக்கமாக சொல்ல வேண்டுமானால் விளிம்புநிலை மக்களுக்கு அரசியல், அதன் அதிகார மமதை போன்றவற்றின் குரூரத்தை முடிந்தவரை எளிமையாக பேசியுள்ளது விடுதலை. விஜய் சேதுபதியும் அவரது சகாக்களும் பயன்படுத்தும் 'தோழர்' என்ற ஒற்றை வார்த்தையில், அனைவருக்குமான அரசியல் என்னவென்பதை தெளிவாக விவரித்துவிடுகிறார் இயக்குநர் வெற்றிமாறன். காவல்துறையால் எளிய மக்கள் சுட்டு வீழ்த்தப்படும் போது எதிர்க்கட்சிகள் போராட்டம் நடத்துவது வழக்கமானது. ஆனால், அதனை ஆளுங்கட்சி கண்டுகொள்ளாமல் விடுவதன் நோக்கம், இவற்றின் பின்னால் இருக்கும் உளவியலை ராஜீவ் மேனன் பேசும் வசனம் மூலம் தெளிவுப்படுத்தும் காட்சி கவனிக்கப்பட வேண்டியது.

குமரேசன் என்ற சூரி

விடுதலை படத்தின் கதை நாயகனாக சூரி, இவரை இந்தப் பாத்திரத்தில் தேர்வு செய்ததன் காரணத்தை திரையில் பார்த்தால் புரியும். சூரியின் மனநிலையில் இருந்து இந்தப் படத்தில் வெளிப்படும் அரசியலும் மிகமிக முக்கியமானது. 'மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பதறிவு' என்ற குறளுக்கு ஏற்ப சூரியின் மனநிலை காட்சிக்கு காட்சி மாறுவதும், இறுதியாக அவர் எடுக்கும் வெள்ளந்தியான முடிவுகளும் இப்படத்தின் முதன்மையான உயிரோட்டம். போலீஸாக இருந்தாலும் காவல்துறையில் அதிகாரத்தில் இருப்பவர்களின் முன்பு சூரியும் ஒரு எளியவன் தான் என்பதை இறுதிக் காட்சி வரை எடுத்துச் சென்றவிதம் சபாஷ் பேட வைக்கிறது. சூரியின் கேரியரில் விடுதலை திரைப்படம் தான் உச்சம் எனலாம். அவரை விடவும் இந்தப் பாத்திரத்தை வேறுயாரும் இவ்வளவு சிறப்பாக செய்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை.

பவானி ஸ்ரீ - விஜய் சேதுபதி

விடுதலை வெளியாகும் வரை அதிகம் கவனிக்கப்படாமல் இருந்தது பவானி ஸ்ரீ பாத்திரம் தான். பாப்பா/தமிழரசி என குமரேசனின் காதலியாக நடித்துள்ள பவானி ஸ்ரீ, பல காட்சிகளில் பிரமிக்க வைக்கிறார். முக்கியமாக நிர்வாணக் காட்சிகளில் கண்ணீரை கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியவில்லை. சில இடங்களில் சூரியை விடவும் ஸ்கோர் செய்து அசத்துகிறார். வாத்தி, வாத்தியார், பெருமாள் வாத்தியார், கோஸ்ட் என பல புனைப்பெயர்களில் வலம் வரும் விஜய் சேதுபதி, இறுதியாக தோழர் என்ற பெரும் பிம்பமாக மனதில் நிறைந்துவிடுகிறார். இரண்டாவது பாகத்தில் தான் விஜய் சேதுபதியின் ருத்ரதாண்டவம் இருக்கும் என்பது முதல் பாகத்தின் க்ளைமேக்ஸில் தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடிகிறது.

மேஸ்ட்ரோ இளையராஜா

முதன்முறையாக வெற்றிமாறனுடன் இளையராஜா கூட்டணி என்றதுமே பயங்கர எதிர்பார்ப்பு காணப்பட்டது. ஆனால், அது இன்னும் அடுத்தக் கட்டத்துக்குச் சென்றுள்ளது என்றால் மிகையாகாது. முதல் பாதியில் பல காட்சிகளை அமைதியாக கடக்கவிட்ட இளையராஜா, அதற்கும் சேர்த்து இரண்டாம் பாதியில் வெளுத்து வாங்கியுள்ளார். தொடர்ச்சியாக பல படங்களுக்கு இசையமைத்து வந்தாலும், விடுதலை படத்தில் இளையராஜா கொடுத்திருப்பது வெறும் இசை என்று சுருக்கி விட முடியாது. விடுதலை படத்தின் ஆன்மாவை தனது இசை ஸ்வரங்களால் பரிபூரணமாக நிரப்பியுள்ளார் மனுசன். மக்களுக்கு எதிராக காவல்துறையின் அதிகாரம் கட்டவிழ்த்து விடப்படும் போது, வருகிறதே ஒரு பின்னணி இசை.! இறுதிக் காட்சியில் சுமார் 15 நிமிடங்கள் இளையராஜாவின் ராஜாங்கம் தான். அங்கே உயிரை கொடுத்து நடித்துள்ள சூரியை கூட அவ்வப்போது பின்னணி இசையால் ஓவர் டேக் செய்துள்ளார். இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால் விடுதலை படத்தின் பின்னணி இசைக்காகவே ஒரு விமர்சனக் கட்டுரை எழுதலாம்.

Viduthalai Part 1 movie review: Vetrimaaran film is not for the faint-hearted, questions police brutality without fear

Vetrimaaran ’s Viduthalai Part 1, his most hard-hitting film since Visaranai, isn’t just another film on police brutality but one that exposes the inefficiency of a system which continues to prey upon the weak. The film, which is definitely not for the faint-hearted, is an elaborate, detailed exploration of abuse of power and it dives deep into the psyche of a man, an honest police constable, who is torn between his job and seeking the truth. The film is narrated from the perspective of Kumaresan (Soori), a righteous police constable who gets recruited into the team that has been on the hunt to capture Perumal aka Vaathiyar – The Mentor ( Vijay Sethupathi ), the leader of the local separatist group called Makkal Padai (People’s Army). Kumaresan joins the force with big dreams but little does he know that he would spend most of his time doing menial jobs – from delivering food to every check post through the forest to doing tower duty at night. When Kumaresan accidentally crosses paths with Vaathiyar and later plays a pivotal role in his capture, his beliefs about what’s right and wrong are questioned.

The film opens with a train blast and the visuals are easily the most chilling scenes one would've seen in Indian cinema in recent years. People’s Army is blamed for the attack which has resulted in 28 deaths and many severely injured. The police department launches operation ‘Ghost Hunt’ to capture Vaathiyar dead or alive. Cut to next shot, we see a bus being frisked at a check post and the police shoot down two men (for carrying weapons) in cold blood when they try to flee the scene. In both the scenes, some lives have been taken but the police killings are justified as they become newspaper headlines the next day. Viduthalai questions the ethics behind police brutality in the most uncomfortable, unflinching fashion. The fact that it narrates the story from the perspective of an innocent constable makes the experience more chilling than one can imagine.

The film unfolds like a crime drama and takes its own sweet time to set up its world. Apart from throwing the spotlight on police brutality, the story also discusses the state of politics in Tamil Nadu in the 1990s. Soori, who has so far played comic roles in his career, is a very interesting choice to play the central character. He becomes a silent spectator – just like most of us - to all the atrocities that happen in the name of police investigation. He brings out the innocence as well as helplessness of his character so effectively.

Vetrimaaran makes some very interesting casting choices. It’s a masterstroke to cast Gautham Vasudev Menon to play a key role. A filmmaker whose films (in the past) glorified cop killings now plays a cop in a film that exposes police brutality in the most hard-hitting fashion. Vijay Sethupathi as Vaathiyar is a no brainer. Even though he makes an extended cameo appearance, he leaves maximum impact in those scenes. Bhavani Sre is a talent to watch out for and the role of the women, who face the maximum brunt, is what makes Viduthalai disturbing at times.

விடுதலை பாகம் 1 Review: அதிகாரத்துக்கு எதிரான வாழ்வியல் போராட்டத்தின் அழுத்தமான பதிவு

பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனத்துக்கு மலை கிராமம் ஒன்றில் கனிம வள சுரங்கம் அமைக்க அரசு கொடுக்கும் அனுமதியை எதிர்த்து அப்பகுதியில் உள்ள தமிழர் மக்கள் படை நடத்தும் போராட்டமும், அதனால் ஏற்படும் பாதிப்புகளும்தான் ‘விடுதலை பாகம் 1’ திரைப்படத்தின் ஒன்லைன். எழுத்தாளர் ஜெயமோகனின் ‘துணைவன்’ சிறுகதையை மூலக்கதையாக கொண்டு இயக்குநர் வெற்றிமாறன் இயக்கியிருக்கும் படம். இதில் விஜய் சேதுபதி, சூரி, கவுதம் மேனன், ராஜீவ் மேனன், பவானிஸ்ரீ, சேத்தன் உட்பட பலர் நடித்துள்ளனர்.

அருமபுரி மாவட்டம் மற்றும் அதனைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மலை கிராமங்களில் கனிம வள சுரங்கம் தோண்ட ஒரு பன்னாட்டு கம்பெனியுடன் ஒப்பந்தம் மேற்கொள்ள திட்டமிடுகிறது அரசு. அரசு உத்தேசிக்கும் இந்தத் திட்டத்திற்கு அப்பகுதியில் உள்ள தமிழர் மக்கள் படை இயக்கம் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து அரசுக்கு எதிரான போராட்டங்களில் ஈடுபடுகிறது. தமிழர் மக்கள் படையை கைது செய்ய முயற்சிக்கும் அரசு போலீஸாரைக் கொண்டும், மலை கிராம மக்களுக்கு நலத்திட்ட உதவிகளையும் வழங்கி மக்கள் படை இயக்கத்தை கூண்டோடு அழிக்க முயற்சிக்கிறது. இதில் இரண்டு தரப்பிலும், உயிர் சேதங்கள் ஏற்படுகின்றன. இந்தப் போராட்டத்தில் வென்றனரா? மக்கள் படையை காவல் துறை கைது செய்கிறதா? இல்லையா? - இதுதான் படத்தின் திரைக்கதை.

18 பக்கங்களைக் கொண்ட ‘துணைவன்’ சிறுகதையில், கதையின் மையப் புள்ளியை மட்டும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, அதில் தனது கற்பனைக் கலந்த கதையைக் கொண்டு வெற்றிமாறன் இந்தப் படத்தை இயக்கியிருக்கிறார். ஏற்கெனவே நாவலை படமாக எடுத்து வெற்றி கண்டவர், இந்த முறை இந்தச் சிறுகதையின் மூலம், உலகம் முழுவதும் மூன்றாம் உலக நாடுகள், வளரும் நாடுகளில் நிகழும் கனிம வள கொள்ளைக்கு எதிராக பெருங்கதையாடலை நடத்தியிருக்கிறார். பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்களின் பசிக்கும், தாகத்துக்கும் காவு கொடுக்கப்படும் பாமர மக்களின் சதைக்கும், ரத்தத்துக்கும் மருந்து தடவியிருக்கிறது ‘விடுதலை பாகம் 1’ திரைப்படம்.

பொதுவாகவே உலகம் முழுக்கவே வளர்ச்சி என்ற பெயரில் நடத்தப்படும் மனித வேட்டையின் வாசம் இப்படத்தின் காட்சிகள் தோறும் வீச்சமெடுக்கிறது. மலைகளில் மலரும் காட்டுமல்லியில் கலந்திருக்கும் ரத்தக் கவிச்சியின் வாடையை படம் பார்த்துவிட்டு திரும்பும் ஒவ்வொருவரின் சுவாசித்திலும் வெற்றிமாறனின் காட்சி அமைப்புகள் கலக்கச் செய்திருக்கிறது. அதிகார அத்துமீறலுக்கு எதிரான வசனங்கள், காட்டுத்தீ போல படத்தில் அவ்வப்போது பற்றி எரிய செய்திருக்கிறது. ஒரு வளர்ச்சித் திட்டத்தைக் கொண்டு வர எத்தனிக்கும் அரசுக்கு இடையூறாக எழும் போராட்டங்களை அதிகார பலம் கொண்டு ஆட்சியதிகாரத்தில் இருக்கும் அரசுகள் எவ்வாறு கையாளும் என்பதை எந்தவித சமரசமுமின்றி இந்தப் படம் உரக்கப் பேசியிருக்கிறது.

வெற்றிமாறன் திரைப்படங்களின் கதாப்பாத்திரத் தேர்வு எப்போதுமே திரையில் மாயங்களை நிகழ்த்துபவை. அந்த வகையில் இந்தத் திரைப்படத்திலும் அந்த மாயஜாலம் நிகழ்ந்திருக்கிறது. குமரேசன் கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் வரும் சூரி, அந்தக் கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் பொருந்திப் போயிருக்கிறார். குறிப்பாக, படத்தின் முதல் பாதி முழுக்கவே, மலை கிராம காவல் பணிக்குச் செல்லும் காவலர்கள், அதிகாரிகளையும் வாழ்வியல் சிக்கல் நிறைந்த அந்த சூழலையும் எப்படி எதிர்கொள்கின்றனர் என்பதை விளக்கும் காட்சிகளில் எல்லாம் சூரி சிறப்பாகவே செய்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால், படத்தில் வரும் சில ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளில் அவர் செய்யும் அசாத்தியங்கள் ஏற்கும்படியாக இல்லை. அதை இயக்குநரே தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம்.

வெற்றிமாறன் படங்களில் இசையமைப்பாளர் ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷ் எப்போதும் ஜீவ ஸ்ருதியாக இருப்பார். இந்த முறை அந்தப் பணியை அவரது தங்கைக்கு கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். பவானிஸ்ரீ மலை கிராமத்துப் பெண்ணாக சிறப்பாக நடித்திருக்கிறார். வெற்றிமாறனின் பட நாயகிகளுக்கே உரிய வீரத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கும் வாய்ப்புகள் இல்லாவிட்டாலும், பாசம், காதல், சோகம், துணிவை வெளிப்படுத்தும் காட்சிகளில் நன்றாகவே நடித்திருக்கிறார். இவர்கள் தவிர, காவல் துறை அதிகாரிகளாக வரும் சேத்தன், கவுதம் மேனன், இயக்குநர் தமிழ் என அனைவரிடத்திலும் போலீஸாரின் மேனரிஸங்கள் மெஸ்மரைசிங் செய்கிறது.

பெருமாள் பாத்திரத்தில் வரும் விஜய் சேதுபதி வெகு எளிதாக தனது பாத்திரத்தை கடத்தியிருக்கிறார். படத்தில் அவர் வரும் இடங்கள் சிறப்பானதாக அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. படம் முடிந்து அடுத்த பாகத்திற்கான லீட் வரும் இடங்களில் அவர் குறித்த காட்சிகள் முன்னோட்டமாக திரையில் காட்டப்படும்போது ரசிகர்கள் சிலிர்த்தெழுகிறார்கள். வெற்றிமாறன் வசனத்தில் கவுதம் மேனன் அரசு அதிகாரியாக கேட்கும் கேள்விகளும், அரசுக்கு எதிராக விஜய் சேதுபதி பதிலளித்து பேசும் வசனங்களில் அரசியல் நையாண்டி தூக்கலாகவே இருக்கிறது.

சுற்றிலும் மலைகள், மரங்கள், செடிகள், அரிக்கேன் விளக்குகள், காட்டாறு, பாறைகள் உருளும் மலைப் பாதைகள், லுங்கியும், துண்டும் அணிந்த யதார்த்த மனிதர்கள், குறுகலான தெருக்கள், ஓட்டு வீடுகள், டீக்கடைகள், உருவங்களற்ற நம்பிக்கையின் அடிப்படையிலான தெய்வங்கள், திருவிழாக்கள், போலீஸ் பட்டாலியன், பாரேட், செக்போஸ்ட், பத்திரிகையாளர்கள், அரசு உயர் அதிகாரிகள், போலீஸ் ஜீப் என படம் முழுக்க கதைக்களம் முழுவதையும் வேல்ராஜின் ஒளிப்பதிவு ஒன்றுவிடாமல் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது. எல்லா ஃப்ரேம்களிலும் பின்னால் தென்படும் மலைகள் போலவே, படத்தின் ஒளிப்பதிவும் காட்சி அமைப்பும் படம் பார்ப்பவர்களின் மனதில் கனத்த மவுனத்தை சுமக்கச் செய்திருக்கிறது.

Viduthalai Part 1 First Day First Impression: A Soulful Soori Turns This Procedural Drama Into A Study On Compassion

With Viduthalai Part 1 , Vetri Maaran is back on familiar turf, placing a piercing human drama in the middle of a powerful struggle against systemic oppression. But what separates this call-for-revolution piece — in theme and style — is Soori ’s take on human virtue. The film unfolds in the fictional Armapuri hillside district of southern Tamil Nadu, which comes with a deeply socio-political past.

Lines are drawn to separate the good vs evil, the police vs locals, the oppressors vs the lowered caste, the Makkal Padai terror outfit vs the encroaching mine tunnel project. But as we’ve learnt from Vetri Maaran’s cinematic bible, nothing is as simple as it seems.

Soori is nothing short of magnetic as Kumaresan, who places honour and kindness above everything else as a low-ranking police driver assigned to the contentious area. “Aren’t we here to serve and help the people,” he recurrently asks even when he is often reminded of his place (“Naamala varumai naala policekaaranga aanom: Poverty drove us to become cops,” an officer tells him). But he refuses to suppress his ideals even while keeping his head down. Soori captures this balancing act with ingenuity. 

Kumaresan’s moving arc is the cumulative result of every small act of compassion (an innocent car lift brings him closer to the love of his life, while another such lift inadvertently brings him closer to the man he’s taught to be after). 

Vijay Sethupathi makes a special appearance as Vaathiyar aka Perumal, the leader of the insurgent outfit, the history of which is conveyed through a taut animated sequence, diegetic radio sounds and political speeches. This comes off as a smart choice in a few instances. Note how a minister’s speech about the mining project and its association to the rebel group’s uprising is faintly heard in the background as Kumaresan and Tamilarasi (Bhavani Sre gives an adequate performance if you’re able to look past the brownfacing) have a warm moment. 

But sometimes the film leaves us wanting more – especially when much of the film revolves around Vaathiyar and his thought-provoking ideologies. The film rushes through most of its scenes through fast cuts, never letting us breathe or internalise an atrocity, before which another one is thrown at us to chew on. 

But whenever we do get a breather, the film’s visual language is magnificent. The film’s opening sequence, which covers the cataclysmic aftermath of a bombing, plays out like an elaborate battlefield scene (reminiscent of Roger Deakins’ edgy camera work in 1917 ). R Velraj’s frames take us through grief, destruction and ruin in a single take shot that evokes feelings of seething rage and guilt. 

This feeling of true and unnerving discomfort is never quite delivered again by the film, which sprints through much of its screenplay. But what we do take home with us are the silences and a few fleeting yet formidable visuals — like that of an immobile pair of limbs sticking out of a police jeep. 

Even if Vetri Maaran chooses to reserve Vaathiyar’s story for a sequel, he manages to paint a distinctive picture even without saying much. The director’s flourishes are always a joy to observe and in Viduthalai you notice it when a deadly insurgent stops to ask for permission before entering a house even in the middle of his manhunt, or when a running joke about the humble chow chow turns out to be a disguised take on economic status and internal hierarchy. 

Ilaiyaraaja’s comforting music is an interesting choice that offsets the film’s grit and spirit. It works best during Kumaresan’s moments of coming of age, as he discovers his place in the unforgiving police unit in the hills, and the existential grander scheme of things.

Viduthalai Part 1 Movie Review: Fans Get Spellbound By The Brilliant Film Making Of Vetrimaaran!

Director Vetimaaran continues to deliver successful films. His last film Asuran with Dhanush was a blockbuster hit. Now his next film Viduthalai Part 1 with Soori and Vijay Sethupathi is released worldwide today. This film was said to be based on a true incident that happened between the common people who live in the terrains and the police. But Vetrimaaran clearly says that it is a pure fiction and not even a single character or incident is based on true events.

The first 5 minutes single shot sequence will give us goosebumps. It creates a huge wow factor in terms of co-ordination between every department such as actors, cinematography, art direction, costumes, sound design and make up. Diaglogues are too good and it helps to convey the proper essense of the film in a Communist ideology. It also focus on the pressue faced by the police department, which inturn creates a fear for the public towards them.

Along with Soori and Vijay Sethupathi, too many good actors and directors are coming together in this film most important film of Tamil Cinema. Gautham Vasudev Menon, Chethan, Prakash Raj, Rajiv Menon, Kishore, Bhavani Sri, R Velraj and many other leading actors and actresses have performed brilliantly in their given roles.

We can easily say this as the carreer best performance of Gautham Vasudev Menon. Though he appears in almost every single film in Tamil, Vetrimaaran gave him a perfect character and derived a subtle performance from him which works well on screen.

Legendary composer Ilayaraja mesmerized the audience with his divine touch and elevates the emotions with his music throughout the film. This is definitely a Masterpiece from the masters of Tamil film industry Vetrimaaran and Ilayaraja. The entire technical team has worked hard to deliver their best and it evident in each frames. Cinematographer Velraj captured the feel of nature in various dimensions in this film.

It is not an easy task to make a film in the terrains but Vetrimaaran proved his mettle by doing it on a perfect note with his amazing narration skill. Vetrimaaran is one such film maker who takes his own time to prepare the screenplay of a film. And that brings the quality to the audience while watching the film in theatres. Vetrimaaran always use to that his Guru Late Balumahendra is watching his works. The legend will definitely feel happy for this tremendous piece of film making from his student Vetrimaaran and bless him with the strength to give more such films in future as well.

We can proudly say that Vetrimaaran took Tamil Cinema to another great level with Viduthalai Part 1. We should thank Vetrimaaran for bringing out the excellent performer in Soori. His dedication towards the film is visible throughout the film. When he gets emotional, it connects with the audience automatically. To be particular, he makes us feel the urge to save all the village women who were treated badly by his own police department.

Finally, the film crew has presented a beautiful glimpse of Viduthalai Part 2 at the end of the film, which again creates a curiosity for the audience to wait for its release date. It has the most important conversation between Kumaresan(Soori) and he Vaathiyaar (Vijay Sethupathi).

'Viduthalai Part 1' review: A brilliant political epic with more to come

Filmmaker Vetrimaaran’s prowess in crafting sensible flicks around conflicts between oppressive systems and oppressed people is well known. With his latest Viduthalai Part 1 , the director leaves an indelible mark in the genre with an outstanding epic-scale period drama which excels in its blend of masterful visual craft with forthright socio-political positioning.

Based on a short story by author B Jeyamohan, the 145-minutes-long film is essentially a story of friction between an insurgent group called People’s Army and the government set in a Tamil Nadu forest-settlement in 1987. The film follows a morally upright rookie cop Kumaresan (Soori) as he becomes a largely mute spectator of the extreme violence that the rebels-sympathising forest-villagers have to face by the police while defending their resources and dignity.

The nexus between the State power and corporate interests, their never-ending quest for natural resources and the subsequent violence to silence the retaliating victims is an universal phenomenon that has been going on for several centuries. Making explicit his sympathies for the oppressed, Vetrimaaran explores the different layers of violence and shows how the cops too fall prey to the larger scheme of things.

The major highlight of the film is its terrific casting. Soori, who was restricted to only cringe comedy sequences in many films, finally gets his due here with a serious role of a vulnerable cop who suffers for his virtues. Veteran filmmaker Gautam Vasudev Menon essays a daunting police officer’s role quite effortlessly.

While renowned cinematographer Rajiv Menon shines in a unique role, Bhavani Sre as the charming and strong-willed villager Tamizharasi is the find of the film.

Vijay Sethupathi as insurgent leader Perumal “Vaathiyar” gets very limited screen time as the film is more focused on the police atrocities. The missing plot points of the first part will be connected in the second installment while the climax teaser for the second part promises more of Sethupathi.

The wedding of romantic sequences with the main plot is deftly done as the two typical Ilaiyaraaja songs and their choreography beautifully add to the pace and need of storytelling and they nowhere feel unnecessary.

Velraj’s cinematography in capturing various emotions, setting the film’s mood and tone, and the whole imagery of forest are striking.

Despite limitations, the filmmaker succeeds in showcasing as many nitty-gritties of conflict-ridden regions with regards to the mighty State going to extremes to achieve its ends.

Although there would be similar violent retaliations by victims, both violence of the oppressor and the oppressed cannot be seen as equal, and Vetrimaaran’s success lies exactly in the persuasive reiteration of this fact through his craft.

Vetrimaaran's 'Viduthalai - Part 1' lacks the raw power of 'Visaranai', but it’s still a worthy, watchable coming-of-age action-drama

Viduthalai - Part 1 is set in 1987, and it is based, loosely, on a Jeyamohan short story. At heart, it's an underdog story. The big name in the cast is Vijay Sethupathi (he does a kind of cameo appearance here, and he will be seen more in Part 2), but this is about the arc of the Soori character, a newbie cop named Kumaresan. Vetrimaaran's greatest triumph is seeing in Soori qualities that no one else saw for the 25-odd years the actor has been around. Vetrimaaran sees the goodness and the innocence and the helplessness and the lack of confidence and the desperation and also the internal moral code the actor is able to project. (Kumaresan, for instance, is not someone who will say "sorry" to a superior just so that he can escape punishment, especially if he knows he has done no wrong.) Soori repays Vetrimaaran's instincts by internalising the director’s writing and delivering an utterly convincing performance. Most times, he doesn't seem to be "acting". He just is. His Kumaresan becomes our eyes and ears, because like him (initially), we are outsiders to this world.

So, what is this world? It is a specific place set in the hillsides of southern Tamil Nadu, but it is also a microcosm of the State that encourages "development" and invites mega-corporations to invest in, say, mining infrastructure. There is a complex argument to be made about whether all development is wrong, but the film does not get into it. Viduthalai - Part 1 operates at a fairly simplistic good-versus-bad level. The "bad guys" are the cops, the special task force set up to capture the leaders of a rebel group named Makkal Padai. These are the good guys. They resort to violent means to push back against the government's development initiatives, because of the cost to the local people and the local ecosystem. Depending on who's doing the talking, the members of Makkal Padai are Naxalites or revolutionaries or terrorists. Note the name of the outfit's leader, the Vijay Sethupathi character. It's Perumal, which means God. No one has seen him, and yet he's everywhere, orchestrating everything. The name fits.

How does an outsider become an insider? How does an innocent gain wisdom? How does someone learn to separate State-disseminated propaganda and media-disseminated loose talk from the truth? In other words, how do you distinguish the real "good guys" from the real "bad guys"? And finally, how does a man who fears a gun at the beginning end up holding one? That is: how does a "coward" become a "hero"? These are the questions driving Viduthalai – and the way they shape Kumaresan is the overall arc of the coming-of-age narrative. His voiceover-letters to his mother clue us in to his state of mind, and almost everyone around him – both good and evil, pure and corrupt – becomes a kind of teacher, or "vaathiyar". (This, by the way, is also a term of respect used for the Vijay Sethupathi character.)

Even Kumaresan's love interest (Paapa, played by Bhavani Sre) teaches him something – that you should trust people due to what they are on the inside and not due to the external clothes or uniforms they wear. This moment of realisation (for Kumaresan) is just wonderful, and it made me wish the rest of the love track had been written along these lines. The way Paapa and Kumaresan meet is superb. It’s accidental. It shows us the kind of cruel world this is, both in terms of animals and (subsequently) humans. But the rest of this love angle – propped up by two redundant Ilayaraja numbers – doesn't dig as deep. The song stretches feel like they could be in any movie, any love story. We don't really feel the intensity of this relationship, which is crucial to the climax that intercuts scenes of Paapa with scenes of Kumaresan.

Viduthalai is a worthy, watchable movie. Vetrimaaran, at this point, is incapable of making anything that isn't interesting at some level. But given the gritty subject matter, I found it impossible not to keep thinking back to Visaranai , which is a truly great movie. Why doesn't Viduthalai rise to that level of greatness? One, the film feels too tightly edited. The scenes don't breathe. For instance, there is a bit where a teenage Schedule Caste girl is killed. Its ripples aren't felt to the extent that the scene-description suggests. Except the top brass and Kumaresan, the policemen are a fairly anonymous bunch. And even when we get a jaw-dropping technical achievement, like the long, single-shot coverage of a train accident, we marvel more at the shot than we feel about the victims of the tragedy. (The film's finest bit of cinematography is a drone shot that begins with two men in a forest. The camera keeps rising until the two men become insignificant, like insects, when compared to the vastness of Nature – the very Nature that someone like Perumal is trying to save from mankind's greed.)

And because of this rushed feeling, we do not get socio-political points that we do not already know about, points that could make us look anew at this story about cops who will resort to the most horrible means to get to their goal (i.e. the capture of Perumal). Gautham Vasudev Menon appears in a crisply written part as a senior cop (Rajiv Menon plays his superior, Chethan plays his subordinate). Where does he turn from a sympathetic man who seems to resent the stripping of women to someone who pulls out fingernails to extract information? These little graphs could have added more meat to the proceedings. The breathless pace also means that we do not get the sustained atmosphere of dread that held Visaranai together. (We feared and felt for those innocents in a way we never feel or fear for Kumaresan.) Viduthalai is more like Asuran . It is a simple (and generic) mainstream movie, with a thin storyline, but unlike Asuran , the emotional highs are missing.

Ilayaraja's score further defangs the proceedings by sentimentalising and underlining every emotion. During the scene of that train accident, for instance, the music keeps fighting with the ambient sounds (both dialogue and "atmosphere") for attention. A Vada Chennai or an Aadukalam can use – and be enhanced – by this sentimentalisation, by these songs. But the Visaranai/Viduthalai zone is different – and I find it strange when our filmmakers say they send films to festivals without much of a score but add it for local release "for the sake of the audience". (This has happened with Kaaka Muttai , too, and with many other "new-age" films.) If we are going to make movies that change the way the audiences ( our audiences) perceive cinema, should we not also trust these audiences to accept these films without emotional spoon-feeding? As an aside, in my PS-1 review, I said: "Could the AR Rahman songs have been axed completely to make way for more narrative?" It’s a rhetorical point. I do understand the role music plays in the commerce of cinema, but when you have a sprawling story with several characters, wouldn't you rather spend more time on fleshing out the story? It's a matter of personal taste, of course, but I also think it's a matter worth thinking about.

Then again, this "mainstreaming" may be the thing that helps Viduthalai reach a bigger audience than Visaranai did. Given that this is primarily the coming-of-age story of Kumaresan, I wished we had been inside his head a lot more. But then, the entirety of Part 1 is a lead-up to Part 2 , and in the  version I watched a few days before release, there's an epilogue where every single moment, every single line is a firecracker. Another interesting factoid about Viduthalai . Until now, the two-parter films we have had in India (or maybe even the world) have all been in the fantasy / history zone. This may be the first time a socio-political movie is being served in two installments. We won't be able to gauge the full impact of Viduthalai until we see the second part, but for now, what we have is a well-intentioned film that feels like it needed to cut deeper, far deeper.

VIDUTHALAI MOVIE REVIEW

Viduthalai is a huge triumph of conviction. Vetri Maaran successfully brings out the hero who was hidden within Soori all this while. On the surface, Viduthalai is an unconventional tale of the underdog. There is lots of drama, emotions, and simmering tension. We wait for the hero to explode for the unfair treatment meted out to him, but he is willing to grind it out to hold onto his principles. It isn't just but the discriminatory system treats him like he's merely a pawn in a game of one upmanship. Soori is like us - A man of hope. A man looking forward with hope. But the system sucks his blood out like a leech.

Soori abstains himself from his usual antics and transforms into Vetri Maaran's faithful disciple. A restrained yet compelling performance. You root for his triumph despite knowing the obvious. And when his moment of glory arrives, you can't hold back from clapping for him. Bhavani Sre gets her big break as the leading lady. An endearing performer with a lot of promise. Chetan is the biggest surprise of the film. As the face of police brutality, he is relentless and cruel. He isn't in your face, the torture handed out to the hero is an everyday habit for Chetan. It's part of the rigidness that defines him.

At the other end of the spectrum is Gautham Vasudev Menon, who balances out the brutality by being a bit more humane when compared to the other cops in the film. He is on the good side. Or is he? Let's wait and watch in the next part. Every character in the film is neatly fleshed out. Even the smaller supporting characters do their bit in elevating the film.

The last but most important piece of this puzzle is Vijay Sethupathi as Vathiyar. Not much is revealed about him. But we are given a glimpse of what awaits us in the second part. We know that he stands for the oppressed. And the glimpse create enough hype for the Vathiyar character, giving us a terrific non-conventional cliff hanger.

Ilayaraja's background score is haunting and pulls us into the film. Velraj's cinematography and Jacki's art direction lend to the authenticity of the film. It almost feels like we are stuck within a rigid and flawed system without any redemption. 

As was the case with Visaranai and Jai Bhim, Vetri Maaran doesn't hold back in showcasing the brutality of the police force. It's raw, real, and gritty. The good thing is that there is more to come in the next part. Viduthalai 1 is yet another great attempt by Vetrimaran spearheaded by a wonderful performance by Soori.

வெற்றிமாறன் இயக்கத்தில் எல்ரெட் குமார் தயாரிப்பில் முதல் முறையாக கதையின் நாயகனாக சூரி நடித்து இன்று வெளிவந்துள்ள திரைப்படம் விடுதலை 1.

இரண்டு பாகங்களாக உருவாகியுள்ள இப்படத்தில் விஜய் சேதுபதி முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரத்தை ஏற்று நடித்துள்ளார். மேலும் இசைஞானி இளையராஜா இப்படத்திற்கு இசையமைத்துள்ளார்.

வெற்றிமாறனின் இயக்கம், சூரி முதல் முறையாக கதையின் நாயகனாக நடித்திருப்பது, விஜய் சேதுபதி கதாபாத்திரம் என்ன? இளையராஜாவின் இசை என விடுதலை 1 படத்தின் மீது மாபெரும் எதிர்பார்ப்பு இருந்தது.

அத்தகைய எதிர்பார்ப்பை விடுதலை திரைப்படம் முழுமையாக பூர்த்தி செய்ததா? இல்லையா? விமர்சனத்தில் பார்க்கலாம் வாங்க.. 

மலைப்பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்து வரும் மக்களின் இடத்தில் சுரங்கத்தை தோண்ட அரசாங்கம் முடிவெடுக்கிறது. ஆனால், இதை செய்தால் மக்களின் இடம் பறிபோகும் என்று அரசாங்கத்தின் இந்த முடிவுக்கு எதிராக பெருமாள் வாத்தியார் { விஜய் சேதுபதி } தலைமையில் மக்கள் படை ஒன்று உருவாகிறது.

தனது மக்கள் படை உதவியின் மூலம் அரசாங்கத்தை எதிர்த்து போராடி சுரங்கத்தை தோண்டவிடாமல் செய்கிறார் பெருமாள் வாத்தியார். மக்கள் படையை முழுமையாக ஒழித்துக்கட்ட அரசாங்கத்தால் நியமனம் செய்யப்படுவது தான் சிறப்பு படை. இதில் கைதேர்ந்த காவல் அதிகாரிகளை வைத்து பெருமாள் வாத்தியாரின் மக்கள் படையை பிடிக்க முயற்சி செய்து வருகிறார்கள்.

இதில் மக்கள் படையிலும் எண்ணிலடங்காத உயிர் இழப்புகள் ஏற்படுகிறது. அதே போல் சிறப்பு படையை சேர்ந்த காவல் அதிகாரிகளும் இறக்கிறார்கள். இப்படி 25 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக அரசாங்கத்தை எதிர்த்து பெருமாள் வாத்தியார் போராடி வருகிறார். இந்த நேரத்தில் சிறப்பு படையில் ஜீப் ட்ரைவாக வந்து சேர்கிறார் கதையின் நாயகன் சூரி { குமரேசன் }.

முதலில் மலை பகுதியில் இருக்கும் Check Postல் பணிபுரியும் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு ஜீப் மூலம் சாப்பாடு கொண்டு செல்லும் வேலையை தான் பார்க்கிறார் சூரி. இந்த சமயத்தில் மலை பகுதியில் வாழும் தமிழரசி { பவானி ஸ்ரீ } எனும் பெண்ணின் மீது காதலில் விழுகிறார். ஒரு பக்கம் காதல் ட்ராக் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்க மற்றொரு புறம் பெருமாள் வாத்தியாரை தேடுதல் பணி மும்முரமாக நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.

இதற்காக புதிய அதிகாரியாக நியமனம் செய்யப்படுகிறார் கவுதம் மேனன் { DSP சுனில் மேனன் } . இந்த நிலையில், ஒரு நாள் பெருமாள் வாத்தியார் தங்கியிருக்கும் இடத்தை சூரி பார்த்துவிடுகிறார். இதனை பல முறை மேல் அதிகாரிகளிடம் சொல்ல முயற்சி செய்தும் அதற்கான வாய்ப்பு அவருக்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை.

ஆனால், ஒரு நாள் இதை தன்னுடைய மேல் அதிகாரியான கவுதம் மேனனிடம் கூறி, பெருமாள் வாத்தியாரை பிடிக்க அவர் பதுங்கியிருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு அதிகாரிகளுடன் சூரி செல்கிறார். இதன்பின் என்ன நடந்தது..? 25 ஆண்டுகளாக எந்த ஒரு அதிகாரியாலும் பிடிக்க முடியாத பெருமாள் வாத்தியாரை சூரி பிடித்தாரா? இல்லையா? பெருமாள் வாத்தியாரின் மீது சுமத்தப்பட்டிருக்கும் பழிகள் எல்லாம் உண்மை தானா? என்பதே மீதி கதை..

படத்தை பற்றிய அலசல்

மீண்டும் மீண்டும் தன்னுடைய இயக்கத்தின் மூலம் படம் பார்ப்பவர்களை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்துகிறார் இயக்குனர் வெற்றிமாறன். எதார்த்தமான இயக்கம், சில தொய்வுகள் இருந்தாலும் மிரட்டும் திரைக்கதை, படத்தில் இடம்பெறும் வசனங்கள் என கதைக்களத்தை நேர்த்தியாக கையாண்டுள்ளார். எளிய மக்கள் மீது கடுமையாக பாயும் சட்டம், போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகள் செய்யும் கொடுமைகள், குறிப்பாக பெண்களிடம் போலீஸ் நடந்துகொள்ளும் விதம் உள்ளிட்ட காட்சிகள் மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைக்கிறது.

கதையின் நாயகனாக வரும் சூரி எதார்த்தனமான நடிப்பில் கைதட்டல்களை அள்ளுகிறார். ’தவறு செய்தால் தானே மன்னிப்பு கேட்கவேண்டும், மக்களுக்கு உதவதானே காவல் துறை’ என சூரி பேசும் வசனங்கள் சூப்பர். மேலும் ஸ்டண்ட் காட்சிகளில் பட்டையை கிளப்பியுள்ளார். குறிப்பாக கிளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சியில் கையில் துப்பாக்கி கிடைத்தவுடன் சூரி எடுக்கும் அவதாரம் செம மாஸ். அதுமட்டுமின்றி காதல் காட்சியிலும் அழகாக நடித்துள்ளார்.

கதாநாயகி பவானி ஸ்ரீ சூரிக்கு இணையான நடிப்பை திரையில் வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். அதற்க்கு தனி பாராட்டு. குறிப்பாக காவல் அதிகாரிகளால் கொடுமையை அனுபவிக்கும் பொழுது தன்னுடைய நடிப்பின் மூலம் அனைவரையும் கண்கலங்க வைத்துவிட்டார்.

பெருமாள் வாத்தியாராக வரும் விஜய் சேதுபதி, சில காட்சிகள் மட்டுமே வந்தாலும் அதற்கான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்திவிட்டார். இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் கண்டிப்பாக விஜய் சேதுபதியின் ஆட்டம் பெரும் அளவில் இருக்கும் என எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

மேல் காவல் அதிகாரிகளில் ஒருவராக வரும் நடிகர் சேத்தன் எளிய மக்களுக்கு எதிராக ஈவு இரக்கம் காட்டாத நபராக சிறப்பாக நடித்துள்ளார். கவுதம் மேனன் வருகைக்கு பின் படம் சூடு பிடிக்கிறது. ராஜிவ் மேனன் தனக்கு கொடுத்த கதாபாத்திரத்தில் கச்சிதமாக நடித்துள்ளார். மற்றபடி அனைவரும் படத்தின் திரைக்கதையோடு ஒன்றி போகிறார்கள்.

இளையராஜாவின் பாடல்கள் கேட்க இனிமை, பின்னணி இசை படத்திற்கு பலம். வேல்ராஜ் ஒளிப்பதிவு சிறப்பு. மலைப்பகுதிகளில் கேமராவை கையாடுள்ள விதமும், லாக்கப் குள் கையாண்ட விதமும் பிரமாதம். எடிட்டிங் படத்தின் கதையை அழகாக எடுத்து சொல்கிறது. ஆக்ஷன் காட்சிகள் வடிவமைத்த விதம் சூப்பர்.

Story: When an honest constable is roped in for an operation to capture the fugitive leader of a separatist group, his life takes a dramatic turn.

Review: It's not often that the very first scene of a film makes you sit up and take notice. With a brilliantly filmed opening shot of a train accident that depicts the aftermath of a bombing, resulting in a gruesome tragedy, Vetri Maaran wastes no time in getting into the thick of action.

Viduthalai is set in 1987 when the Makkal Padai ( a separatist group) insurgency is at its peak in a hilly terrain of Tamil Nadu. The plot is quite straightforward. The politicians have tied up with a mega corporation, which is all set to invest in infrastructure in the hilly terrain and in this case, mining. However, there is a huge roadblock to the project, courtesy the Makkal Padai, who believe that development comes at the cost of depletion of natural resources and destruction of the ecosystem.

The leader of the group is Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi), who is referred as a ghost by a policeman as no one knows his whereabouts. The police soon launch Operation Ghosthunt, to hunt down the 'ghost' and his accomplices. The villagers of the region,who consider Perumal their mentor, and lovingly call him Vaathiyar, do not provide a single clue to the police about him. They believe that the police are the 'bad guys'.

It's here that police constable Kumaresan (Soori) is roped in for work, who becomes our eyes and ears throughout the film. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Soori has delivered his career-best performance as the upright cop Kumaresan. He is so brilliant in the film that we begin to wonder where was this side of Soori hiding all these years? Along with Kumaresan, we explore the good and bad sides of both camps. As Soori pens his thoughts through his letters to his mother, we cannot help but be in his shoes.

Vijay Sethupathi might have only fleeting moments in the film, but in each and everyone of those, he shines and gets some major whistle-worthy 'mass' moments. In fact, you end up feeling his presence throughout the story. But giving Vijay Sethupathi some intense competition in those scenes is Soori, who fabulously transitions into a heroic action hero towards the end of the film. Soori also tests waters in romance and his relationship with Paapa aka Tamizharasi (a fantastic Bhavani Sre) has our heart. While Ilaiyaraaja's lilting Kattu Malli is a treat to watch on screen, the second romantic single Onnoda Nadandha doesn't create the same impact. The veteran composer, however, aces the scenes with some power-packed background score.

The film's cinematography deserves a special mention as Velraj seems to be in his element. The drone shot atop the hill during Soori's maiden trek uphill where the camera keeps rising depicting the magnitude of the forest is sheer brilliance. While in one scene, you are shaken witnessing a brutal tragedy, and on the other, you revel in the lush greenery during the romantic tracks, and the tone of cinematography effortlessly segues from one mood to another.

Viduthalai is packed with many raw and gut-wrenching moments, be it the scene where a man's nails are pulled out in custody, a naked pregnant woman thrashed on her head mercilessly or the scene where a bunch of woman are packed like sardines in a room and all stripped naked and tortured. Some of the scenes can seem like sheer torture to watch, but it looks like the director wanted to depict the violence as it is.

Even with so many grim scenes, the film manages to evoke laughter with some lighter moments. Take for instance, the scene where policemen complain about having chow chow for their meal every single day or where Soori tries to offer coffee to his senior officers.

While Rajiv Menon is fitting as the senior officer A Subramaniyam, Gautham Menon who plays Sunil Menon, the officer in-charge of Operation Ghost Hunt , who first tries to win over the confidence of the villagers and later adopts the same strategy as his junior Raghavendar (Chethan, who also delivers a convincing performance), manages to impress, too. Throughout the film, Kumaresan has to bear the brunt of one of his actions as he did not cower in front of Raghavendar, thus giving a peek of how a police constable like Kumaresan is treated by the authorities.

With Viduthalai, Vetri Maaran is completely in his zone and delves into police brutality, caste discrimination and abuse of power with finesse. The film leaves you shaken and triggered, as it should be.

Verdict: Viduthalai scores on all corners, be it the plot, narration, background score, acting performances, cinematography and not to forget, the filmmaking. A brilliant film from the Vetri Maaran stable!

Viduthalai Part-I [2023] Review – Vetrimaaran’s Unflinching Look at the Politics of Oppression

Viduthalai Part-I (2023) Review: Vetrimaaran is one of the few fine film craftsman in Tamil Cinema who aims to raise the political consciousness of his audience. His first two films – Polladhavan (2007) and Aadukalam (2011) – chronicled the strictly personal conflicts of individuals, and its story setting (North Chennai and Madurai, respectively) touched upon the cultural and socio-political themes of the region. Vetrimaaran’s highly acclaimed third film, Visaranai (2015), was a terrifying tale of police brutality and abuse of power. With Vada Chennai (2018), Vetrimaaran went back to the much-maligned Chennai neighborhood (North Chennai) and constructed a sprawling tale of gangsters who are made and unmade by the whims of the political establishment.

For Asuran (2019), Vetrimaaran utilized Poomani’s brilliant novel Vekkai (Heat) to design a tale of revenge that’s firmly rooted in caste and land politics of 1970s South Tamil Nadu. Vetrimaaran’s ability to shift to different regions to tell Tamil people’s stories of oppression and fight for their freedom is what basically strengthens his stories. In his latest venture, Viduthalai (2023), the filmmaker moves to the forest terrain to depict the brutal, cyclical violence between police forces and an armed outfit, who, with the help of locals, fight against the government’s decision to give away the mineral-rich lands to the mining company.

As I mentioned, Vetrimaaran’s story setting and directorial choices easily immerses us into his cinema. Hence, the more important question about Vetrimaaran’s films nowadays is: How good is it? To be honest, my initial reaction to Viduthalai is mixed, which also has to do with the fact that this is only half of the tale.  Vetrimaaran commenced Viduthalai as a low-budget drama after the humongous commercial success of Asuran. In fact, Viduthalai was supposed to be a more contained tale like Visaranai and showcase how the societal outlook of a humane, lower-ranking policeman changes when he comes across the feared leader of a militant group.

But when Vijay Sethupathi was cast as Perumal ‘Vaathiyaar’, the leader of Makkal Padai (People’s Army), Vetrimaaran kept expanding the tale, and it was decided to divide Viduthalai into two parts. Viduthalai Part-I focuses on a freshly recruited police constable Kumaresan (Soori). Set in the late 1980s, the story predominantly follows Kumaresan’s journey of disillusionment as he gradually witnesses the brutalities his superiors inflict upon the poor, innocent locals. Vijay Sethupathi’s Vaathiyar has a ghostly presence in the narrative until the final stretch of part-I. His character is all set to take over the major conflicts in part II.

Vetrimaaran’s strengths are at full display in Viduthaalai’s first 30 minutes as he tightly sets up the macro and micro plot mechanics. The long tracking shots have become his signature. And Viduthalai opens with such an expertly staged scene where the camera closely captures the chaos and misery in the aftermath of a train derailment. People’s Army members are said to be involved in the well-planned derailment. While the armed radical outfit has retaliated against the police, this was touted as their first planned attack against civilians. Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu (Rajiv Menon) duly announces how this is an outright act of terrorism and reprimands media outlets sympathetic to the cause of the People’s Army.

The incident increases the tension in the forest area, both in the police camp and villages. Soori’s Kumaresan is simply a cog in this vicious policing machine. His hill driving skills are the significant reason for his recruitment in the E company. Soon, Kumaresan lands in trouble with his callous superior officer after an act of kindness to a young tribal woman, Paapa, aka Tamilarasi (Bhavani Sre). Kumaresan’s righteousness bothers his superior since the recruited men are supposed to follow orders and only worry about their survival. In fact, Kumaresan accepts his punishment without complaint and dismisses his fellow policemen’s advice to apologize to the superior officer.

Writing and staging budding romances are not Vetrimaaran’s forte. But he does a fine job tracing the developing bond between Kumaresan and Paapa (overemphasizing background score is a spoilsport, though). Apart from the grim incidents in the police camp, Kumaresan learns much about the region’s conflicts through Paapa and her tragic life story. As he gradually empathizes with tribal people’s plight, Kumaresan also stumbles upon a piece of information. A series of random incidents bestows upon Kumaresan information about one of the possible hideouts of Vaathiyar and his group.

However, the strict hierarchy in the police force and his previous beef with the superior officer don’t offer Kumaresan to chance to pass on the information. Meanwhile, the government appoints a new DSP ( Gautham Menon ), who comes with different tactics to appease the locals and root out the radicals. While Kumaresan’s superior officer is a sadistic, perverted individual, the DSP effortlessly switches between ruthlessness and benevolence. Eventually, Kumaresan is forced to do something with the information when his worst fears unfold.

Similar to Visaranai, Viduthalai showcases how few people in the corridors of power casually make life-altering decisions on behalf of a large populace. Though the conversations between the authority figures feel stilted at times, it conveys important truths about how democracy operates in a country like ours. Rajiv Menon’s Chief Secretary comes across as a Colonel Mathieu-like character (in Gillo Pontecorvo’s Battle of Algiers, 1966). The power he holds gives him the grace and persuasiveness to set up the majoritarian narrative. Occasionally, Vetrimaaran cuts to newspaper articles to portray how media outlets buy or forced to buy the government’s outlook on the conflict.

 We don’t get any glimpse into the inner workings of People’s Army members in this part. But even in the small scene where the armed local men talk about killing Kumaresan (due to the crucial information he withholds about them), the conversation is very human, unlike the smug, cold-blooded nature of the powerful. Despite numerous struggles Vetrimaaran and his team encountered while shooting in the hilly forest terrain, the execution is nearly perfect. The long and slow introduction sequence of the forest area through Kumerasan’s journey to the police outpost was one of the high points of Vetrimaaran’s direction and Velraj’s cinematography. Equally riveting was the final action/chase sequence in the narrow alleyways of the mountain village.

Viduthalai largely follows a predictable narrative arc. But more than the predictability factor, the film isn’t as engaging as Vetrimaaran’s previous three films. The director, as usual, extracts good performances from his actors. Soori brilliantly carries the narrative. It’s not easy for a popular comedian actor – who often relies on exaggerated body and facial gestures – to perform in a nuanced manner. He falters on very few occasions and largely raises himself to meet the role’s physical demands. Therefore, it’s the writing that somewhat fails to make a greater impact.

Vetrimaaran repeatedly uses shocking imagery and expository details to move the narrative forward. In the eight years after Visaranai’s release, Tamil cinema has seen plenty of stories about police brutality, including the recent Jai Bhim (2021) and Taanakkaran (2022). Of course, in reality, the deeds of the police have been even more brutal. However, in Viduthalai, the shocking visuals of assault on female bodies are solely designed to sustain tension within the narrative.

On one occasion, it gives ‘meaning’ to Vaathiyar’s killing spree. On another occasion, it keeps us on edge and makes us wonder if Kumaresan will save Paapa. In Visaranai, the unflinching documentation of human rights violations didn’t promise any cinematic retaliatory violence. In Asuran and Vada Chennai, Vetrimaaran’s staging of violence was deliberately stylish (accompanied by rousing soundtracks) and sometimes remained a little detrimental to the film’s social commentary.

As I mentioned, the protagonist Kumaresan is simply a cog in the system that the narrative is prone to rely on larger, external conflicts of violence. On the other hand, a lot about Vaathiyar can’t be revealed since the film is also a set-up for part II. In fact, the only time Kumaresan controls the narrative is when he pieces together the importance of his information. But he doesn’t make any progress with it until the final scenes. I was also plagued by a simple, logical question of why such a secretive leader wouldn’t change his hideout even after knowing (for quite some time) that a policeman had found out the place.

Perhaps there’s also a problem in casting someone like Vijay Sethupathi in the role of Vaathiyar. The business and audience reception of Viduthalai will be bigger with a name like VJ Sethupathi (and, of course, he offers an earnest performance as usual).  But his screen presence has somehow pushed the filmmaker to create an overtly political, crowd-pleasing narrative instead of a modest socio-political drama about the psychological and physical struggles of a policeman with a conscience. Viduthalai will still be considered ‘too raw’ or ‘documentary-like’ by the mainstream audience. Nevertheless, we must wait and see part II to judge or comprehend the work as a whole. And going by the epilogue, part II seems to be more dramatic and violent.

Despite my reservations about this film, Viduthalai Part-I (145 minutes) potently delves into the roots of state-sanctioned violence and oppression. It’s so far the most politically-charged film in Vetrimaaran’s oeuvre.

Viduthalai Part 1 review: A powerful, riveting drama that leaves you spellbound

The movie is insightful, giving the viewers a comprehensible understanding of the mindset of those serving in the police force.

Yet another gem from Vetrimaaran!

Viduthalai Part 1 has been so realistically shot and the story so compellingly told that it is almost impossible for one to remain unmoved.

Need we even say that Viduthalai (Freedom) Part 1 is yet another gem from Vetrimaaran and that it has realism and class stamped all over it?

A police story

The story revolves around Kumaresan (Soori), a constable who is freshly assigned to a police unit.

The unit is tasked with capturing Perumal aka Vaathiyaar (Vijay Sethupathi), the popular leader of a rebellious outfit that protects the rights of indigenous, downtrodden people in the hills.

For the government, the capture of the rebels, in general, and Vathiyaar, in particular, holds immense significance.

The capture will pave the way for them to make money by selling the land to a mining corporation interested in plundering the resources of the region.

The police unit is stationed deep inside the forests where the rebels roam freely with the support of the locals.

Kumaresan has two distinct qualities that set him apart from the rest of the unit.

He is a very conscientious policeman, always looking to help the locals in whatever way he can.

Polite, obedient, helpful and respectful to everybody, Kumaresan comes across as a pushover to everybody in the force.

Yet another significant characteristic of Kumaresan is his tenacious nature.

He holds on to his ground when he knows that what he has done is right — even in the face of brute force and authority.

It is under these circumstances that one day, Kumaresan saves an old woman fighting for her life by dropping her and her granddaughter Tamilarasi (Bhavani Sre) at a hospital in his police jeep.

Kumaresan is severely punished for the “offence” of saving an elderly woman’s life by disobeying a superior’s order. However, Tamilarasi falls in love with the honest and helpful police constable.

As Kumaresan starts spending more time at the camp, he begins to understand the reason why the locals hate the cops.

He also notices the brutal and inhuman methods the cops have been employing mercilessly to hunt down their targets.

It is at this time that Tamilarasi one day discloses that she is a relative of the elusive Perumal, whom the police are after for almost 25 years.

What happens then is what the story is all about.

Told with heart and passion

Like almost every other Vetrimaaran film, this story, too, is told with a lot of heart and passion. It is insightful, giving the viewers a comprehensible understanding of the mindset of those serving in the police force.

The level of inhuman nature of the officers is directly proportional to their ranks. As the ranks keep increasing, so does their inhumanness.

Kumaresan is always looking to help people and is confident of his abilities to capture the rebels.

His immediate superiors are more empathetic and accommodative than their higher-ups — one of whom is a sadist to the core.

The film is based on Thunaivan , a story of eminent writer B Jeyamohan. The detailing is so good that you actually feel the pain of the oppressed.

Actors steal the show

Soori — who was only known as a comedian prior to this film — showcases a completely different facet in this film. He simply turns into constable Kumaresan.

Lean, mean and exceptionally fit, Soori looks every bit the character and delivers an outstanding performance, probably the best in his career so far.

Vijay Sethupathi, who plays Vathiyaar, is just spot on with his portrayal of a fearless warrior willing to stick his neck out against the administration for the sake of protecting the rights of the people.

Director Gautham Vasudev Menon plays Sunil Menon, the new police officer who is transferred to the region to catch the rebels.

He delivers a commanding performance which takes the intensity of the film to a new high.

Director Rajeev Menon, who plays a senior officer in the government, also comes up with an impactful performance.

Bhavani Sre just nails her part as Tamilarasi. She undergoes e a complete transformation for the role.

Best technical support

Ilaiyaraaja’s music is apt.

Cinematographer Velraj, Vetrimaaran’s most trusted cameraman, delivers brilliant visuals that make you feel as if you are watching the developments unfold in person.

Vetrimaaran’s thorough understanding of not just the pain of the downtrodden tribals but also the pain of those in the lower rungs of the police force enables him to come up with this absorbing and hard-hitting film.

It also throws light on the exploitative mindset of administrators and politicians.

Vetrimaaran ends Viduthalai Part 1 at a crucial stage but not before giving a glimpse of what is in store in Viduthalai Part 2 .

And if one is to go by what is shown in the end, Viduthalai Part 2 is likely to be even more magnificent than the first part.

This is a must-watch. Don’t miss it for anything in this world!

Tamil director vetri maaran’s new film stars soori, vijay sethupathi, gautham menon, bhavani sre and chetan..

There are few better positions from which to observe the exercise of authority than the lowest rung. Tamil director Vetri Maraan’s terrific new film Vidhuthalai Part 1 (Liberation), set in 1987 but ricocheting through the present and even the future, provides a bottom-up view of power through the experiences of a low-ranking police driver.

Kumaresh (Soori) is the newest recruit in a police unit that has been set up to nab the shadowy rebel leader Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi). Stuck at the border of a forest for months, poorly equipped, making do with basic rations (the gourd known as chouchou is a staple), and always in danger of being attacked by Perumal’s followers, the police unit initially invites sympathy.

The 150-minute movie begins with a bravura extended single-take depiction of a train that has been blasted off its track. This is the very day that Soori, gingerly picking his way among the bodies, concern and conscientiousness writ large on his face, begins work as a driver, cook and general dogsbody.

The rebels are protesting against a proposed mining project in the region. The police don’t have a single photograph of Perumal, who flits in and out of view but whose reputation, and essence, loom large over events.

There is another behind-the-scenes presence in Vidhuthalai Part 1 , based on a story by the writer Jeyamohan (a second part will be released over the next few months). The state, represented by the wily Chief Secretary Subramaniyan (Rajiv Menon), doubles down despite incidents of custodial torture, killings by trigger-happy policemen and the disappearance of suspects. High-ranking officer Sunil Menon (Gautham Menon) is sent to ensure that “Operation Ghosthunt” is executed successfully.

Vetri Maaran, who has written the film with Jeyamohan, keeps a densely plotted narrative moving along while never ignoring the political circumstances behind Perumal’s militancy. The director of Visaranai , Vada Chennai and Asuran is no stranger to addressing debates on caste, deeply embedded inequity and injustice through popular storytelling devices.

Kumaresh’s charming courtship of village resident Tamizharasi (Bhavani Sre) unfolds amidst soulful tunes by Ilaiyaraaja, Battle of Algiers -style chases, and disturbing instances of police excess that leave Visaranai behind in terms of their shock value. Some of these scenes are needlessly graphic, especially in showing the trauma of the women.

The stuff that goes on in this remote outpost, far away from the eyes of the media and with the state’s sanction, is presented with a boldness and cogency missing from popular portrayals of militant movements. Except for a few moments of crowd-pleasing heroism, the film has an unwavering ripped-off-the-headlines quality that is conveyed through documentary-style realism and cinematographer R Velraj’s unshowy visuals.

Vetri Maaran dexterously flips the notion that there are two sides to every story by watching Perumal’s war on the government through Kumaresh’s troubled eyes. This marvellous creation, beautifully played by Soori, struggles to earn his place in the police unit while also answering to his conscience. The cast includes Chetan as Kumaresh’s odious boss, who is an all-too-perfect product of a system that has dehumanised its constituents.

The police suspect the bomb blast was executed by Makkal Padai, a separatist group which claims to oppose the government as the measures taken for development of the region comes at the cost of destruction and depletion of natural resources and the ecosystem.

But were the Makkal Padai really behind the horrific train attack that killed several civilians? Who is the mastermind operating this outfit? Why do some villagers support the group that is termed a terror organisation? A naïve cop, Kumaresan (Soori) who joins the police department tasked with hunting down the kingpin, tries to give us the answers.

The film gets more realistic and rustic as it proceeds with its narration. Using the word 'terrifying’ to describe the brutality on screen would be too mild a word. Viduthalai screams of pain and helplessness under the abuse of power.

Viduthalai is a socio-political commentary that delves deeper into the systemic oppression present in the police forces. It talks about how those at the tail end of the hierarchy are forced to kill their passion to serve the people – which should ideally be the objective for any police officer on duty – just to survive and stay in their jobs.

Soori is excellent with his convincing performance as an innocent, honest, and humane cop. He does take the liberty to show off his comedic timing to spur sporadic laughter without deviating much from the serious plot.

It was interesting to see Gautham Vasudev Menon, a filmmaker whose police-themed films were appreciated but were also criticised for glorifying police encounter killings, star in a cop role that pretty much does the same. However, the gaze was quite the opposite when positioned in the Vetrimaaran universe.

The supporting actors, including Bhavani Sre, Chetan, and Rajiv Menon, deliver great performances. The songs by Ilaiyaraaja, specifically the one in Dhanush’s voice, are soothing to our ears.

Viduthalai succeeds in pulverising the audience’s hearts every time it plays 'Aararirao', a word used in Tamil lullabies, infused in an 'Oppari', a folk song tune used at funerals.

The film has graphic displays of custodial torture that may border on torture porn; however, with the ultimate messaging of the film intact, it is quite evident that the director has his heart in the right place.

Another doubt along similar lines: Why would Vetrimaaran , who is known for his anti-caste films, introduce a cop named ‘Menon’, a caste marker used predominantly in Kerala? I didn't find a major significance to its reference in this film. Was it really necessary? Again, given Vetrimaaran's track record of consistently delivering progressive films, I trust that's an unintentional reference.

Moreover, if you watch Viduthalai as a native Tamil speaker, the mediocre lip sync lets you disconnect from the film once in a while. 

Vetrimaaran makes a clear announcement at the start of the film that it is a fictitious work. Ironically, though, one could not miss noticing that the film resembles several events of police brutality that have happened in Tamil history. Was the announcement intentionally ironic? Maybe, maybe not but Viduthalai Part 1 ends with a leadup to a sequel. And that's exciting.

Just like the film has two parts, the crux of Viduthalai universe, in my opinion, can be divided into two parts too. One, not everyone who is accused and killed in police encounters necessarily is the real criminal, and two, not all police officers are brutal and inhuman. What does Viduthalai Part-2 have in store? Let's wait and watch.

'Viduthalai Part 1' review: Lots to like about Vetri Maaran’s dramatisation of police brutality

Deciding to be a good person is all fine and dandy, but how do you decide which side to stand for? Who’s the oppressor? Who’s the victim? Who’s right? Who’s wrong? These are questions we grapple with every day. And it’s this extraordinarily relatable question that haunts police driver Kumaresan (Soori, who is a wonderful fit) throughout Viduthalai Part 1. He doesn’t have the luxury of being a bystander, with his job forcing him to take a side. However, where another policeman would unthinkingly follow orders—prioritising self over others—this man is unique, for, somehow, some way, he’s managed to retain his manasaatchi (conscience).

Another policeman points this about him almost as a statement of doom. It’s due to being wired so that Kumaresan is unable to apologise as a compromise. On some level, it seems like he wishes he could, but he simply can’t. He’s not vain about his behaviour; he just doesn’t fit into the usual boxes of a policeman. In a film about the struggle between systemic authority and rebel forces, Kumaresan is arguably the biggest rebel of them all, a man who just cannot obey/submit. Perhaps it is this that truly defines a good man: The refusal to choose convenience over conscience. Viduthalai Part 1 is terrific when it digs into these subconscious, intimate spaces.

At a point in his delicate romance with a tribal woman, Thamizharasi (Bhavani Sre), Kumaresan stands confused at a point of ideological divergence. He finds that the anecdotes he’s hearing are at loggerheads with what he’s been fed by the system. I loved that Vetri Maaran, in a way, toys with us similarly. The first time we see Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi) in action, we register him as a brutal killer—not all too different from the policemen, in fact.

But then, we, like Kumaresan, have our eyes opened with more information—and suddenly, we see the truth. Isn’t it touching that Kumaresan’s eyes are opened by something as simple and beautiful as… love? Isn’t that, after all, the great equaliser? As Thamizharasi asks him, “Who’s real family? Those you are related to by blood? Or someone like you, who, at great personal suffering, still chooses to stand for us?” In a sense, she shows him the way. It’s perhaps why for an entire song, ‘Unnoda Nadandha…’, we see Kumaresan following her, as she leads the way through the darkness of the forest, shining a torchlight. The song itself feels longer than it needs to be, but I didn’t mind.

Soori is fantastic as the innocent, dogged Kumaresan. There’s just an innocence about comedy actors that comes through so effortlessly. In Viduthalai, this air of innocence Soori carries about him benefits the character greatly. When he’s resisting submitting to his horrible boss (Chethan), where another actor might come through as rigid in an egotistical way, Soori comes across as vulnerable—which makes his character profoundly likeable. This is Soori in a way we have hardly seen him, and much credit to Vetri Maaran for imagining this. There’s none of the slapstick, goofy humour we have come to associate with Soori in this film. It’s instead replaced by situational, organic humour—of course, in small places where it can exist. I laughed out loud when Kumaresan is asked to accompany a senior officer as he walks into the forest, and he says, “Enakku varla, neenga poitu vaanga.” Even his refusal to be forced into an apology is admirable and funny.

“Thappu dhaanunga ayya… aana epdi thappaagum?” These are such lovely portions in the film. But of course, there isn’t much place for humour in this film. We hear a voice in the beginning say that the events are all fictional, that any resemblance to real people/incidents is purely coincidental. But it all does ring real. A corporate-political nexus is eager to exploit land and resources, and as a side-quest, subjugate the residents living in harmony with said land. The question is, do the corporate organisations, political parties, and the police (who seem to act like security personnel for the rich and the powerful) really care about civilians and their rights? Do they care about anything beyond moneymaking?

Vetri Maaran, once again, shows great talent for capturing both the intimate and the expansive. That long, opening shot of the aftermath of a railway bridge explosion is a great example. The camera captures the frenzy, severed limbs, the dead, the crying, the pleas and sobs, the orders… before suddenly rising and moving into one of the train compartments to capture the misery inside. It glides out soon and presents us finally with an aerial shot of the carnage. Vetri Maaran does pretty much the same with the premise of this film. We get the inner workings of Kumaresan’s mind, but we are never too far away from understanding the larger developments and forces at play.

Vetri Maaran isn’t one to flinch from gore and violence. It’s essential to the realism of this film and serves the purpose of eliciting a reaction from us. Like in Visaaranai, the film is constantly asking us questions: Are you seeing this? Are you seeing what’s going on, under the guise of an interrogation? Are you seeing these power-hungry humans lose their humanity? Do you see why it bothers Kumaresan so much? At its essence, the story is drawn from a familiar template: A hunter joining the hunted. And yet, Vetri Maaran is careful not to make Kumaresan the champion of the downtrodden. He’s careful to allow Perumal and team to fight their battles. And in any case, this is just Part 1 of the film, and if I have a major grouse, it’s that we don’t get a sense of completion, despite having spent about 150 minutes on the film. Kumaresan is still foggy at the end, and his moral compass is a bit all over the place. And so, Part 1 ends with some footage from the second film, so we get a sense of what could potentially happen. Perhaps in that film, Kumaresan will finally, truly come of age?

It’s still a relief to know that filmmakers like Vetri Maaran truly care. I’m not talking about cinematic merits alone here; I see real value in their messaging. He cares for the trampled; he sees the value in mounting opposition against the big, bad system (like in Visaaranai). In this first film (even if it’s incomplete), whilst documenting the physical and psychological struggles of a driver named Kumaresan, whilst depicting the tragedies that befall a trampled community, whilst raising opposition to the methods of the police, director Vetri Maaran even manages to get us thinking of a question that’s fundamental to our being. Who’s a good man? If it is true that a good man is one of conscience, one who’s willing to reflect on his own actions and change in the face of compelling information, then it’s clear that Kumaresan is a good man. How far will it take him though? How long before the system fixes its crosshairs on him? Hopefully, Vetri Maaran won’t keep us waiting for too long.

Vetrimaaran is an award-winning director and everyone knows that when he decides to make a film, they can expect something unique and engaging. With Viduthalai, the director has split it into parts and Viduthalai Part 1 was released on March 31. This movie has been adapted from the short story titled Thunaivan written by B Jeyamohan, and both Jeyamohan and Vetrimaaran worked on the screenplay together.

Kumaresan (Soori) is a police constable and he is sent to a police camp based in a village near the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. A police camp, headed by Ragavendar (Chethan), has been established there in order to catch the key leaders of a terrorist outfit called Makkal Padai (People's Army) headed by someone named Vaathiar aka Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi).

Makkal Padai had been fighting police brutality for many years and their latest act was to detonate bombs on a train bridge which killed 25 and injured many. Now, politicians have inked a deal with foreign companies for mining in the forest area and the Makkal Padai has taken this up as their latest cause. Since Ragavendar doesn't succeed, in comes senior cop Sunil Menon (Gautham Vasudev Menon) as the head of Operation Ghosthunt.

Kumaresan recounts the story of what happened in letters to his mother and that's how we learn of what transpires. He joins the E company as a jeep driver and his duty is to deliver food to all the police who are based in the checkposts in the forest. When he helps a village woman to a hospital, Kumaresan is severely punished by Ragavendar and he learns there is a nexus between the villagers and the Makkal Padai. He refuses to apologise to Ragavendar and that's how we learn how strong he is when it comes to his principles and beliefs. It is at this time he also meets Paapa (Bhavani Sre) and an unexpected romance ensues.

Do the police catch Perumal and his men? How does constable Kuamresan fit into this whole police hunt for Vaathiar? Who is Paapa?

At the outset, one may think this movie is a police drama like Vetrimaaran's earlier film Visaranai and it is not. It is a completely different story in a different setting. Like Visaranai, Viduthalai also shows police brutality and cops being 'bad' but for very different reasons.

The way the director has narrated the story, it seems to be simple - good men versus bad men, but there are so many layers that unfold as the film progresses - politicians and corporate relationships, how politicians shape social narratives, cops and their brutal behaviour, caste politics, a seemingly untenable romance. The beauty of the film lies in these layers and there are some scenes that flow so naturally that you realise its importance, like the actor on screen, much later.

Vetrimaaran's ability to weave a gripping narrative is well-known, but his choice of Soori as the lead would have surprised many. The main highlight of this film is Soori, as he has delivered a stellar performance as Kumaresan. It is his face that is clearly etched in your mind long after you leave the theatre.

How Kumaresan and thereby Soori mature through the film is a compelling watch and you applaud the character as well as the actor. Soori carries this film on his shoulders not just with his acting but his voiceovers as well. Bhavani Sre must also be appreciated for her good work as Paapa and Chethan as well. Ilaiyaraaja's background music was apt for the film, but his songs could have been better. Velraj's cinematography was a great asset to Viduthalai.

Viduthalai (Freedom) is a film that is a must-watch because it offers a new cinematic perspective of Vetrimaaran and especially because Soori is outstanding.
