Structured Community-Based Learning

The Virtual Art Academy is a vibrant community of painters, from absolute beginners to more experienced artists , that are working together on a structured program to improve our painting skills. The two key advantages of the Virtual Art Academy program are:

  • COMMUNITY When you join the Virtual Art Academy, you become part of a vibrant and friendly community of learners from all over the globe to help motivate you to learn to paint better. Our unique community software integrates discussion forums , reading materials , online painting lessons , and learning assignments , into a unique structure that guarantees you are all working from the same high quality knowledge base.
  • STRUCTURE The comprehensive program covers all the material you would get at a top Art Academy, and is based 9 key skill Building Blocks℠ (authored by Barry John Raybould) which include all of the information you need to paint well. If you are a Beginner Painter , you can take advantage of the highly structured Apprentice Program of Online Painting Classes to master one simple step at a time . If you are a more Experienced Painter , you can fill in the gaps in your art education that are holding you back from improving your painting. With my flexible self-study structure, you can systematically follow the program of workshops in your own time , and at your own pace . There are no fixed schedules to follow.

Make Art, Not Just Paintings

My online art school is not just about learning how to paint— it is about learning how to create art, using my unique Visual Music & Poetry® approach.

How It Works

Instead of committing to US$80,000-US$120,000 to go to a traditional art school or art academy for four years, you just pay a simple monthly fee to become part of our community. There are no commitments. You can cancel your membership at any time , and owe nothing more. You have absolutely nothing to lose by giving it a try for a month, to see if you like it. Read The Student Reviews .

Each week you get a new lesson from the Virtual Art Academy Apprentice Program Curriculum. I have included everything single item of knowledge I learned over my 30+ years of professional painting into the program, so you will never run out of new things to learn. Students tell me this is the most comprehensive knowledge base on painting they have found anywhere. You will never need to buy another art book!

Testimonials

Many members have now been with me for over a decade, taking advantage of the Spiral of Learning℠ approach in my virtual art classes —a unique way of helping you continually strengthen your foundational skills, and improve the quality of your paintings.

Five star rating from me for Virtual Art Academy (VAA)! I retired last year, and decided I wanted to spend my time in retirement learning how to oil paint. But having never painted before, I wasn’t even sure what to look for in an online painting course. The small steps are easy to do

I am extremely impressed with the process that Barry has developed for VAA.  Learning to paint can be intimidating, but when broken into many small projects it is very do-able.  I just did my first live model painting session- a 5 hour, one day session.  Thanks to VAA, I was able to break the painting… Read more “The small steps are easy to do”

An excellent  foundation on so many aspects of painting

homework art school

I never had formal training in painting and my style has always been very realistic, slow and not at all artistic, just a copy of a photograph. Professional Online Painting Classes For Adults From Award Winning Artist, Barry John Raybould

Very few (if any) professional artists have documented everything they learned into a comprehensive self-study format like this (the whole program contains over 1500 pages of reference material). In fact, the majority of online painting courses you will find on the internet are not created by full-time professional artists (check for yourself by looking for a professional website dedicated to selling their own work).

My virtual painting classes and courses capture all of the knowledge and skills that I have acquired over a period of 30 years on my journey to becoming a professional artist. You can see details of my awards, juried exhibitions, solo and group shows, and gallery representation on my  fine art website .

Why is this important.

  • If you learn from a professional full-time artist, you get a higher quality education , that ensures you will not get into bad painting habits that will hamper your progress in the future.
  • You need to study the key principles of art , and not follow a step-by-step procedures that, at best, can only turn you into a clone of your teacher. If you only learn by watching demos, you will only ever be able to make a copy of a particular instructor's painting, and will never acquire the skills to tackle any subject you want .

Here are just some examples of my own artwork.

Many of my students have won awards, found galleries to represent their work, been elected as members of art societies, and become full time professional artists.

Choose Your Own Painting Style

Online Painting Classes That Will Take Your Work As Far As You Want To Go

Building Blocks Of The Structured Online Painting Classes

I have built a structured curriculum called the Virtual Art Academy® Apprentice Program. This structured program of online painting classes covers all the skills you need to paint well. Read more about the curriculum here .

After completing the lessons and assignments in these online painting classes, you will have the skills to create exciting compositions, incredibly beautiful color harmonies, and expressive brushwork that will bring your painting alive. In addition you will be able to give your painting a meaning, as well as a strong design, that will take it to professional and museum-level quality.

Insights Into A Professional Artist's Life

Approximately each month, for my Spiral of Learning students, I run a special live online painting class via Zoom, based on actual art projects I am currently working on myself, as well as my own museum visits, to give you a deeper appreciation of art at a professional level — this way you get an inside peek into the life of a professional artist.

Multiple Paths Give You Flexibility And Choice In Your Learning

The Virtual Art Academy online painting course is organized in such a way as to give you a choice of how you learn. You can follow a structured path and follow online painting classes sequentially on your own. Alternatively, you can work on one of the Building Blocks at a time, in a group, with the other students via the weekly community lesson.

Choose Whichever Painting Medium You Want

  • Online Oil Painting Classes
  • Online Watercolor Painting Classes
  • Online Acrylic Painting Classes

Since you are learning the important underlying principles of painting that are the foundation of all great artworks, my online painting classes work for all painting mediums. In my Virtual Art Academy online art school, I have integrated oil painting, acrylic painting, and watercolor painting classes, all into a single teaching system. You can also use other painting media such as gouache, pastel, mixed media, colored crayons, as well as digital painting tools.  The choice is yours.

Setting The Expectation

Do not expect this build up of skills to happen quickly. It takes time and effort to get to be a good painter. You have to put some work in. In these virtual art classes I am not offering any quick fixes. It is essential, if you want to paint well, that you systematically build up your foundational skills—that is what I designed this program for.

Many artists who have participated in my online paintings classes have said that they have seen significant improvements after just a few months. To get to a really high level though takes at least a year or two, and to reach a professional level you will need at least four years. The beauty of this program is that (a) it is structured, so the longer you work on the curriculum, the better you will get, and (b) it is very comprehensive, so you can go all the way from absolute beginner to top professional level in just one program.

Subscription Based Membership

With the Virtual Art Academy online painting classes, you pay on a monthly basis to access my virtual painting classes. You do not have to commit to taking the whole of the program of online painting classes up-front. You can stop your monthly payment at any time, and you will not owe anything. You need to have an active subscription in order to access the lessons.

The goal of these virtual art classes, is to provide you with a lifetime of learning opportunities at an affordable cost so that your painting will continue to improve to a professional level. Many members have been with my Virtual Art Academy for over a decade because they say they learn something new every day. The reason for this is that the knowledge base is very deep and comprehensive, and it is continually growing — everything I learn personally as part of my own artistic growth as a professional artist, I share with you.

... and as a bonus, you can make wonderful friendships with our worldwide community of dedicated artists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Online painting classes for beginners.

Are these online painting classes for beginners?

My Apprentice Program includes a special set of self-study virtual art classes that are designed just for absolute beginners who have never painted before. You will get all the basics here of learning to paint, and perhaps more importantly, a friendly community of other artists to give you support and encouragement whenever you need it.

Online Painting Classes for Adults.

Are These Online Painting Classes Suitable For Someone Who Wants To Pursue Painting As Just A Hobby?

My Virtual Art Academy online painting classes are designed for adults who want to build a solid foundation for their art in a structured way. Even if art is just a hobby, by taking a structured approach to your learning you will get much more out of your hobby.

Are These Online Painting Classes Suitable For Experienced Or Professional Painters?

These online painting classes contain comprehensive information for all levels. Experienced painters will be able to take their work to a higher or a professional level using the more advanced information in each Building Block.

Will I Have To Commit For The Entire Program?

Absolutely not. You can just join for a month and see how you like our online painting lessons. If it doesn’t work out for you you simply cancel your subscription and your monthly payments will stop.

How Much Time Commitment Is Required?

There is no required time commitment. You can do the course at times that are suitable for you. Some students work on it just on the weekends, some work on it full time. The program is very flexible, and you can go as fast or as slow as you like.

What if I Don't Have Much Time?

I have built a 10 minute-a-day learning system. My Virtual Art Academy has an app for your phone or tablet that you can use on-the-go for those of you who are busy, and who don't have much time. Using this app, you can browse through postings in any of the 9 Building Blocks, and look at how the masters have solved a particular painting problem in that area.

This will build up your knowledge of painting and enhance your ability to understand master paintings on a daily basis. This means that when you finally have more time available to paint, you will be much better prepared. Think of it as your daily 10-minute virtual painting class.

How Long Does It Take To Complete The Apprentice Program?

The amount of information in the whole program is equivalent to a four-year university program. You complete approximately one lesson per week, for a total of 192 weeks. In addition, if you have a Spiral of Learning℠ membership, you get access to my more advanced Spiral of Learning℠ lectures to help you keep improving your paintings and understanding of art all the way to professional level.

Will I Get Feedback On My Assignments?

I designed the system as a self-study community program in order to keep the monthly cost low.

This keeps the cost considerably below the US$80,000-US$120,000 you would pay for a four-year program of instruction at a traditional art university.

However, I built into the system many special features to encourage a quality peer-to-peer feedback system.

First of all, I broke down the learning into small manageable chunks - in fact my online painting classes contain 350 of them in total. Each of these chunks is a small and easily manageable assignment that will help you improve your painting, one small step at a time. This makes learning fun and satisfying, since each step is easily managed.

Secondly, you can submit your assignments to the Online Campus where you can discuss it with other students and get feedback. In my experience, those members who engage with our community get a lot out of it, and learn faster.

Thirdly, I have also built into the system a place where you can read specially featured previous discussions on the assignments. These discussions will give you guidance for doing your own assignments. In this way you can build up your own experiences by learning from the previous efforts of other students, once again accelerating your learning.

All of these features are unique to the Virtual Art Academy, and according to what many of my students have told me, you will not find anything like the quality and comprehensiveness of this program anywhere else, unless you were to attend a full time university art program.

Do I Have To Post My Assignments To The Online Campus?

It is not necessary to post your assignments to the Online Campus. You can choose to work on your own if you wish. The system is completely flexible in this regard.

Are Drawing Classes Included In This Program?

Yes they are. In fact I can teach you how to draw quite well, in just about one week. That's all it takes if you follow my method. The method is covered in detail in the Apprentice Program.

Drawing is important to learn because you can only paint as well as you can draw. In the Apprentice Program you will learn the two most important drawing techniques, angular transfer and triangulation. You will learn techniques of line and mass gesture drawing, contour drawing, measurement techniques, as well as, many lessons on perspective and vanishing points.

Are These Online Painting Classes Suitable For Plein Air Painting?

All the online painting classes are perfect for plein air painters. In fact, much of my own work is done plein air. Important topics in plein air painting are covered in the Apprentice Program, including the Alla Prima painting process, how to match colors in nature, and how to give your paintings depth using atmospheric perspective.

What is the value of the information in the Virtual Art Academy online painting classes?

Over a period of thirty years, I have personally invested over $40,000 on my own art education. To this day I still continue to invest in acquiring even more advanced information. A good traditional art academy will cost upwards of $80,000 - $120,000 for a four year program. My vision with the Virtual Art Academy was to be able to share all of his information with you. In this way you get the same high quality art education, but at a fraction of the cost, and as a bonus, in a much more structured form.

Our students have usually done a thorough search for online painting classes. They consistently tell us they have found no other online painting course as comprehensive or as high quality as the Virtual Art Academy program. You can see what our students say about the online painting classes on our student review page.

How does the Virtual Art Academy online painting course compare with attending a one-week workshop with a professional artist?

The Virtual Art Academy four year Apprentice Program has been divided into 16 workshops. Each workshop was designed to contain about the same amount of information that you would get if you attended an intensive 7-14 day workshop with a top professional artist. A single workshop with a top professional artist would cost you $3000 for just one week, including the cost of airfare, lodging, and tuition.

For the same price, with the Virtual Art Academy, you will get far more information for your money. The Apprentice Program is a highly cost-effective way of acquiring a lot of information that can take you all the way from an absolute beginner to a professional level. Plus you get the added benefit that you can fit your workshops into your own schedule. You have complete control over when you do the lessons and how long you take to do them.

How do the Virtual Art Academy® online painting classes compare with attending a four-year program at prestigious art school?

The Virtual Art Academy provides a much broader curriculum than you would get at a traditional art school or classical realism atelier. You will learn not only the skills of the traditional classical realism curriculum that were taught in the French academies, but also modern impressionist color techniques and the principles of modern art and design. This means you are not forced into painting in just one style. You will get the skills to follow your own creativity and path and paint in any style you prefer. Free Online Art Games for the Art Classroom

I’ve been asked the question ‘Where can I find free online art games that I can use in the classroom?’  I’ve been scouring the internet and below is a selection of free online art games that are great fun and might well link to the projects you teach.  They can be a useful extension task if you have computers or iPads in your classroom.  Bookmark this blog post as you are sure to want to come back to it!

This game is a great way to consolidate knowledge about hue, saturation, complementary, analogous, triadic and tetradic colours.  If your students do not know these terms part of the task can be to look them up.  I wouldn’t normally teach about triadic and tetradic colours. You have to match the colours on the screen which is harder than you think.  At the end of the game, you are given a score and therefore the excuse to play again as you have something to beat!

Color Online Art Game

This is Sand

Challenge your students to make a landscape with ‘This is Sand’. This would make a great homework if you are teaching a project on landscapes. It is a simple idea: students sprinkle digital sand in layers to create images. They can subtly change colours and download their creations.

homework art school

Street art is a game by The Tate.  I have mixed opinions about this one as it’s quite limited, although I do like the wall background and the spray paints.  What do you think?

Street Art Online Art Game

Inspiral Web

Are you old enough to remember the old fashioned spirograph? Well, this is the web version. You can choose different disks and different colours and save your creations.

homework art school

Jig zone is an online puzzle site with an art section.  Students do the puzzles by dragging the pieces into place.  A simple activity to fill the end of a lesson if you only have 5 minutes left and starting something else would be unwise at that point.

Quick, Draw!

‘Quick, Draw!’ is interesting as it asks the question ‘Can a neural network learn to recognize doodling?’  It asks you to add to the worlds largest doodling dataset.  You have 20 seconds to draw the items it asks for.  I think the learning here is simply opening children’s minds to the idea that a computer can learn.

Quick Draw Art Games

Auto draw’s main feature is that you start drawing and it tries to recognise what you are drawing.  You can then click on the picture and your drawing turns into that picture.  There is a useful tutorial if click on the menu in the top left-hand corner under ‘How to’. You can add text and shapes.  There are more colours than you might think in the colour picker.  I think you could use the shapes and colours and text to teach colour theory.

Auto Draw Art Games

Weave Silk is a wonderfully therapeutic game that involves symmetry. Simply use your cursor on the screen to make symmetrical patterns. It has a slide where you can change to rotational symmetry and colours can be blended. Challenge yourself to make flowers, birds, bats and if you’re feeling ambitious – faces!

homework art school

If you teach graphics you will love this game.  Kerning is the spacing between letters or characters in a piece of text.  This game teaches students to create the correct spacing by eye.  Great fun!

Kern Me Art Games

‘Shape Type’ is a letter shaping game.  Students need to move points on the letter to try and get a pleasing shape to the letter.  Super tricky but quite addictive!

Shape Type Art Games

50 Famous Paintings

‘Can you name the 50 Famous Paintings’ is on the ‘How Stuff Works’ website and has many easily recognisable paintings.

Online Art Games

TriviaPlaza

TriviaPlaza is a quiz site which has an art section.  Be warned – they quizzes are difficult.  Suitable for frustrating bright students aged 16+ or for art teachers to test their knowledge!

Thanks for all the goodies! kleki.com is a great online painting tool!

Thank you for this! Unfortunately, my district blocks websites for no apparent reason and a couple of the games won’t work for my students.

Hi Edward, It’s unfortunate when schools block useful websites. I’ve checked all the games and they work on my computer, so I suspect your student’s computers might need a flash plugin or some other sort of update. Thanks for your comment, Sarah.

The best online art classes available now

01. drawing essentials with glenn vilppu.

Best online art classes sketch of people in forest

One of the world’s most famous art teachers, Glenn Vilppu instructs professionals at animation, game and film studios worldwide, as well as universities, art schools and private art academies. And the one problem he constantly comes up against is that many students walk into the class without knowing the fundamentals, such as how to hold a pencil correctly.

So this six-week course attempts to fill those knowledge gaps, and is aimed not just beginners but any artists, even professionals, who have never studied formally.

  • Start Glenn Vilppu's online course now

At $800, it’s not cheap, but bear in mind you won’t just be passively watching video lectures. The aim is to replicate the experience of attending a real-life art class; so you get your work critiqued weekly, alongside group discussion and the opportunity to get answers directly from Vilppu. You’ll also be able to see critiques of the other students as well, as would happen in a regular live class.

Get the Creative Bloq Newsletter

Daily design news, reviews, how-tos and more, as picked by the editors.

Once you're done, Vilppu also offers some world-class figure drawing classes on his site. He strongly recommends you don't jump ahead, and take this class first, however knowledgeable you think you are.

02. Drawing and Sketching for Beginners by Robin Slee

Best online art classes hands with pen

Right at the start of your journey, and want to know what all this art stuff is really about? This introductory-level class on Udemy is a great place to begin, and at $54.99, it's not such a huge financial commitment.

  • Start Robin Slee's course now

Tutor Robin Slee is a self-taught freelance digital artist and illustrator. On the course, Slee covers fundamentals like how to hold a pencil correctly and how to make marks. That might sound basic, but these are not actually intuitive things (as we mentioned in the previous entry, even experienced artists get them wrong), so it's pretty useful to nail them at this early stage. And Slee's instruction is clear, simple, jargon-free and easy to follow.

The course consists of over three hours of video content, segmented into 25 modules, accompanied by practical exercises for you to download. There's also a dedicated Q&A section where you can post your questions, ask for feedback, or share your results from the course.

03. Joseph Patric Daniels

Best online art classes Joseph Patric Daniels

Udemy has a wide range of online art classes from professionals, and those delivered by Joseph Patric Daniels are also good choices. How to Draw from Beginner to Master, How to Paint from Beginner to Master – Acrylic Painting, How to Paint from Beginner to Master and Oil Painting from Beginner to Master are all brilliant places to start.

Featuring comprehensive step-by-step instruction, the courses range from two to 21 hours and are suitable for all levels. The course fees range from $84.99 to $119.99 but are currently on sale for as little as $16.99. Bargain.

05. Ctrl+Paint

Ctrl+Paint also offers premium video lessons from $10 that take you through basic foundation art skills.

  • Start the Ctrl+Paint art course now

06. Tucson Art Academy Online

Yuko Shimizu is a Japanese illustrator based in New York City and a veteran instructor at the School of Visual Arts. In this online art class, hosted on the Skillshare platform, she offers a detailed guide to essential inking and drawing techniques.

  • Start Ink Drawing Techniques now

Subjects covered include the differences between types of papers and inks; basic brush, nib, and ink techniques; Asian vs. watercolour brushes; and sketching and scanning essentials. In short, there’s a huge amount of ground covered in this 90-minute class, made up of 15 separate lessons, and everyone from the novice to the experienced inker will benefit.

You can’t actually buy the course separately; you’ll need a Skillshare subscription to unlock it. That will cost $32 a month (or $13.99 a month billed annually).

09. Draw and Paint Online: Beginner's Art by Peter Stanyer

Best online art classes painting

Internationally renowned artist, author and tutor Peter Stanyer has taught art for over 20 years at many different levels in further and higher education. Aimed both at complete beginners and more experienced artists who enjoy recreational drawing, his online art classes will teach you the techniques you need to draw with confidence.

  • Start Draw and Paint Online now

All the fundamentals are covered here, including mark making, tone, colour, shape, composition, perspective and more. Requiring around 30 hours of study, this class involves a number of assignments made up of carefully structured, practical, drawing or painting projects. With personal tuition and feedback from Stanyer thrown in as well, this course offers excellent value at just £148 for parts A and B – or $75 for the individual parts.

10. How to Paint: Absolute Beginners Acrylics Course with Will Kemp

Best online art classes paintbrush painting house

Are you someone who “dreams of becoming an artist but keeps putting it off until you have more time?” If that’s you, then this relatively short and snappy art class could be the kick up the backside you need.

Over three-and-a-half hours, Will Kemp – an award-winning artist who’s studied in Italy, run his own art gallery and taught in museums and schools – explains the foundations of working with acrylics and why they're the simplest and most effective way for a beginner to learn to paint.

  • Start How to Paint now

You learn about setup and materials, colour mixing, pigment choice, brush-handling and palette-knife techniques, as well as gels and mediums. Once that's out of the way, you're then encouraged to complete three paintings (a still-life, a landscape, and a seascape) using three different colour palettes.

This class is split over seven video lessons, which can be either streamed or downloaded. Kemp suggest you take time off for a “painting week”', in which you take a different lesson every day; alternatively, you might prefer to study one every weekend. He also includes downloadable reference material and although you won't get feedback on your work, at just £53, it's still a bit of bargain.

11. Mastering colour with Richard Robinson

Best online art classes photo of man

Fine artist and teacher Richard Robinson asked his students to name the biggest stumbling block when it came to painting, and an astonishing 72 per cent said it was getting colour right. So in this two-part art course, which can be both streamed and downloaded, he explains everything you need to know, from how the brain sees and analyse colours, to the key to colour relationships. It may have a narrow focus, but it's still a strong entry in our list of the best online art classes.

  • Start Mastering colour with Richard Robinson now

The Mastering Color course is split into two parts, Mastering Colour one and Mastering Color two. Currently you can buy them both for $100 (at time of writing), or the second part for $55. If you're still not convinced, you can ‘try before you buy’ by viewing the first chapter free on the website.

12. Activate the canvas with Nancy Hillis

Nancy Hills art class

Fed up of making representational art, and want to walk on the wild side? This five-module, self-paced art class will guide you through your first steps in abstract painting. You'll discover how to experiment, loosen up as artist and unleash a brand new perspective on your art.

  • Start Activate the canvas with Nancy Hillis now

In each module, Nancy Hillis, abstract artist and psychiatrist, walks you through a systematic process for reflecting on your inner landscape and mindset. Included are a written lesson and between three and seven video demonstrations that walk you through ways of 'activating the canvas'.

The course costs $247 and there is a payment plan option. The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists; because it's not really about technique but unlocking your creativity. In return, “You'll learn exciting ways to create bold, raw, immediate and alive paintings by activating the canvas intuitively," says Hillis. This is a well deserved entry in the list of the best online art classes.

13. Figure Drawing Fundamentals with Stan Proko

Best online art classes sketch of man

Historically, art schools have always taught a systematic process for drawing people that can be applied to figures of any body type, set in any position. Running across 15 and a half hours of downloadable video, this class delivers exactly that.

One of our favourite best online art classes, it's taught by Stan Prokopenko, an accomplished fine art painter who works for the Watts Atelier school in California and shares his knowledge with millions online through both free YouTube videos and more weighty, paid-for courses like this one.

Aimed at both beginners and experienced artists looking for a refresher, this figure drawing class will teach you how to draw human figures by breaking down shapes into simple forms. You’ll learn about structure, gesture, balance, exaggeration, proportions, shading and more. And for just $109, you can't say fairer than that.

  • Start Figure Drawing Fundamentals with Stan Proko now!

14. Painting portraits with Mark Carder

Best online art classes photo of man

Mark Carder is a highly regarded artist who has painted commissioned portraits of two US Presidents and a US Secretary of State, among others. His best online art class demonstrates and explains the process of painting portraits using a photo as your source material.

  • Start Painting portraits with Mark Carder now!

Carder’s style is direct and to the point, with zero waffle and targeted advice throughout, covering how to photograph your subject, draw the face, blend fleshtones, work with a limited colour palette, match colours, and maintain a likeness throughout the process.

Some of the specific techniques Carder outlines are a little unusual, and the class doesn't cover how to draw a portrait from life. But if that doesn't put you off, these eight hours of downloadable videos, aimed at intermediate and advanced artists, are top quality, well structured, and offer fascinating insights from an artist at the top of his profession; all of which isn't bad for $100.

15. Charcoal Drawing with Aaron Blaise

Best online art classes drawing of bear

Aaron Blaise spent 21 years of his life as an animator on such films as Beauty and the Beast, Lion King and Brother Bear, which he co-directed. He’s now left the movie business, but Disney’s loss is the art world’s gain, as he’s turned his hand to teaching digital painting. And it turns out he’s very good at it.

  • Start Charcoal Drawing with Aaron Blaise now!

In this art class, Blaise creates a charcoal drawing of a lioness, in real time, across five hours and 30 minutes. He draws from a photograph, and you can download a high resolution version of this image, print it out, and follow along at home.

Blaise’s commentary is insightful, informative and really helps you follow what he’s doing. He always strikes the right tone: always helpful, never patronising, making this a strong entry in the list of the best online art classes.

You'll need some basic drawing skills to follow this class, so it’s not suitable for total beginners. But overall, this is a high-quality class for anyone wanting to get to grips with charcoal, wildlife drawing, or both. At time of writing there is a huge sale on this course, reduced from $45/£40 to just $5.

16. Computer Graphics Master Academy

Best online art classes cg art of plane

  • Start Proko now!

The latter consist of pre-recorded video lessons, assignment demos and examples, eBooks, critique videos and 3D models. He also offers personal critiques to premium members via email. Courses cost from $59 to $225 per course.

23. Watts Atelier of the Arts

Best online art classes artwork mountain and horse

Since 2013, the Watts Atelier college has made its art courses available online, at a basic level for $99 a month. This involves pre-recorded video lessons and PDF workbooks.

  • Start Watts Atelier of the Arts now!

For $299 per month you’ll also get a weekly critique by a Watts trained pro artist, and for $499 per month, two 30-minute live video-coaching sessions and a weekly critique by one of the Watts Atelier instructors, which include Erik M Gist and Lucas Graciano. This may be listed lower down on the list, but it's still definitely one of the best online art classes out there!

How should I choose the best online art classes for me?

To choose the right online art class for you, take into account your current skill level – beginner, intermediate or advanced – as not all classes will be relevant to your level. Also, check who's teaching the course, and what their credentials are. That said, just because they're university-level tutors may not mean their classes are amazing, or vice versa if they're not; so it's always worth checking out the reviews and testimonials on their site. (If they don't have a section for these, that should set off alarm bells).

And of course, different art classes require different media. So check what materials you'll need, as this could significantly affect the overall cost of taking the course. It's also worth seeing whether videos are downloadable, whether coursework is provided, and whether there's an option to get feedback on your work from the tutors (That's unlikely to be the case with the cheaper classes, but for more expensive ones it's probably something you should expect).

Art enriches children's lives and their learning. Whether they are experiencing the joy of creating their own unique work or are learning about artists, children build skills and knowledge from having artistic opportunities.

Homeschool families have the opportunity to explore art in so many ways. You can encourage your kids to:

  • Make art for art's sake—so they can experience creating!
  • Make art as a way to learn about other subjects
  • Make art as a lead-in to building handwriting skill
  • Learn to use common art techniques in their own artwork
  • Learn about artists, media, techniques, art history, and the current art world—"art appreciation!"

Art Homeschool Activities, Lesson Plans, and More.

Homeschool Art Activities

Free art curriculum & lesson plans, art museum resources, art history curriculum, art projects, additional reading about teaching art.

Try these ideas to incorporate more art into your homeschooling:

  • Make art together. Practice basic art techniques alongside your children, and sit down with them to create art at the same table together. For example, this video has three fun and easy watercolor techniques to try with kids . Watch the video, gather some basic art supplies, and set aside time to create with the kids.
  • Add drawing to read-alouds. When you read aloud, encourage the kids to draw a scene based on what you're reading. Or you can all listen to an audiobook, and you can draw a scene, too. This practice builds comprehension and attention to detail, and it keeps hands busy during read-alouds. It might even be an early precursor to "taking notes." Consider giving each child a sketchbook just for their read-aloud sketches—think of all those book drawings in one place! (These are great to share with an evaluator if annual assessments are required in your state, too).
  • Encourage kids to create drawings or other art pieces to go with history lessons.
  • Help kids learn about an artist who lived during a historic time period you are studying. They could even learn about artists' depictions of historical events.
  • Create a history timeline, and have kids add drawings to the timeline to illustrate the history.
  • Study the folk art and crafts of the historic time period you are learning about with the kids.
  • Explore an event or period through its art. Picturing America from PBS LearningMedia explores seven periods of American history through art.
  • Ask your kids to create colorful maps for the places they are learning about.
  • Learn together about the artists and artistic traditions of specific countries and regions around the world.
  • Science:  Help your kids learn about the practice of nature journaling  and begin spending more time outdoors with them, chronicling observations together.
  • Math: Do math-related art projects, such as those suggested by What Do We Do All Day?  Tessellations, patterns, symmetry, fractals, and Möbius strips can all be both mathy and artistic!
  • Visit art exhibits and meet artists. Art museums and galleries can be a revelation to children. Museums might arrange a discount for your homeschool group. Have kids take their sketchbooks in case they want to try to sketch some of the artwork they see displayed. Take your kids to talk and listen to local artists, artists who are in residence at a university, and artists who may be exhibiting their work nearby.
  • Look for art. Where is art displayed that it might not be expected? Help your kids take note of street sculptures, artwork in libraries and medical offices, and downtown murals. Is graffiti art? Are screen-printed tee shirts art? Talk about it!
  • Do picture study. Educator Charlotte Mason advocated that homeschooling families do "picture study" of various artists to become familiar with their work. Simply Charlotte Mason has an informative video on how to do picture study with your family.
  • Make books together.  When pre-literate children tell a story, write the story down and have them draw pictures to illustrate. Bind the pages together into a little book. As children become interested in letters and words, allow them to copy or write portions of the words to go with the pictures.
  • Encourage digital art. Consider purchasing digital art software for a tablet or computer so your kids and teens can create digital drawings, paintings, and more.
  • Consider the impact of AI.  Teens and some tweens enjoy learning about current events and controversy around most any topic. Ask them to research the impact of AI on artists and to propose a policy that would meet artists' concerns about AI-produced art.

Tips for success:

  • Get the art supplies. Provide kids with good art materials and tools. Do some research if you're not sure what is good enough quality. Visiting an art supply store can help get you started. It's easier to stay on a budget if you get materials and tools for one medium at a time. Keep art supplies in reach and have a place for kids to work.
  • Get the craft supplies.  You'll also want to keep craft supplies on hand. Don't forget your kids can up-cycle many around-the-house items and create crafts with them. Your kids may be able to create with milk cartons, paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, and paper bags, as described in this article about up-cycling activities from PBS kids.
  • Show interest rather than approval. When your child is creating art, focus on noticing details more than on making evaluative remarks. For example, you could say, "I see you used two different colors for the wings" rather than "good job on the wings." Even positive praise can have a surprisingly negative impact on creativity, as a child learns to wait on your approval rather than responding to your interest and curiosity.
  • Go beyond visual arts.  As you and your children explore what we typically think of as "art," also point out other types of art and discuss them. Include fashion, film, music, fiber arts, architecture, theater, creative writing, photography, and more.
  • Don't overvalue representational art. When kids make art during their earliest years, they are not typically sensitive about whether their artwork is "realistic." Parents and non-artists, though, are frequently excited about art that depicts reality accurately. They may heap on the praise for how "real" a drawing looks. As kids get older and become more aware of any inability to render art work that "looks real," they may become discouraged and even quit drawing. Remember to value the originality of the creation.
  • Frame and display. Show off your kids' and teens' artwork in your home!

KS3 Art – Cubism Home Learning Project

It sounds bad to say but “ I’m making this project up as I go along” 😂  as in, it’s not finished yet! I’m creating the home learning Cubism Scheme of Work for my KS3 (Year 9) classes and I am going to add lessons weekly depending on how my students respond to it and how much work they get done each week etc. If you would like me to share the presentation (what I have so far) just leave a comment below so I can share it with your email.

Email Address

*Update* I have added some more examples of the lesson slides and student’s work. Enjoy!

Home Learning Art Project Cubism

The overall aim of the project is for students to find a Cubist artist and create some research, then understand the features of Cubist work. I want students to be able to engage at home with minimal equipment so the first few lessons will be focused on drawings then eventually (hopefully) adding colour.

For this Cubism project, I am going to be sharing one lesson per week with my students, and updating the presentation slides as I go along – in our school we have 2 hour lessons in Y9 so some of the tasks might seem quite lengthy. If you want to use the presentation feel free to change / alter it so it’s suited to your classes.

homework art school

I am using Loom to talk over the presentation slides and explain what I want students to do, whilst also posting the task in their online classroom. Here is what I have posted online the first part of the lockdown tasks:

Create at least one research page (on paper or online) about Cubism. – Add the title: Cubism – Find one Cubist artist and write 3 facts about them. Add pictures of their work. – Explain the key features of Cubism (objects overlapping, drawn from different viewpoints and positive / negative colours.) – Draw a section of their work carefully, including shading (and colour if you have the equipment) All writing should be in your own words and in full sentences. It can be done online or on paper, just submit a photograph of anything you have done.

Cubist art lockdown art project lessons

For lesson two / week 2 I will ask students to focus on drawing an object from different directions, as described in this slide.

KS3 scheme of work cubism home learning project

For lesson / week 3, I asked students to self-assess their artwork using the criteria from the previous lesson. They then looked at more Cubist artworks and identified how the artists used colour to create patterns and areas of positive / negative colour. This colour theory lesson introduced complementary colours and has a couple of shorter tasks (which are in the full presentation). Understanding how Cubist artists used colour informed the students next steps.

Lockdown art lesson cubism self-assessments

Lesson / week 3 in this Cubism project focused on artist’s use of tone. Students identified ‘successful’ tonal work, then applied their understanding of colour theory again (from the previous lesson). I asked students to work in warm tones this week to ensure they didn’t start adding too many colours all at once. It also helped them realise that harmonious colours on the wheel blend more smoothly.

Cubist art lessons colour theory home learning project

And that’s everything I have so far! One student moved on quicker than the other and added cool harmonious colours to their work, I think it’s looking great:

Hi, yes of course! I just shared it with you 🙂

I love the cubism and abstract! I have to honestly say that I only experimented with this subject matter twice. I’ve noticed that most of the artists I’ve met experiment with abstract and cubism as their primary focus! It seems so adventurous and liberating!!! I have to take a dab at it again. Keep up great work!

Excellent really good ideas

27 Art Activities and Lessons to Try at Home

homework art school

Art Education and the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

In the current situation of the widespread transmission of COVID-19 , the hands of educators are tied. Knowing schools could be the first places to shut down, we’re waiting to see what’s expected of us. Will schools close? What happens if my school closes? Do I need to prepare for virtual learning? What if my students don’t have access to the internet or technology? How do I teach when students have limited access to art materials at home?

These are all questions that have probably been on the top of your mind in recent weeks. We don’t have the answers to all of these things, but we do know that trying to keep some normalcy in the routines of the art room at home is going to be a challenge.

The approach to this situation is not going to be one-size-fits-all. Every single art teacher has a unique situation and different student body they are trying to reach. Keeping that in mind, you, as the educator, will have to develop ways to plan and facilitate learning in a way that meets your specific situation. To help ease the pain of trying to figure out what to teach to your students at home, we’ve created a list of ideas to help inspire your planning. As you look at these ideas, keep in mind the circumstances of your students, and make adaptations to serve your students best.

Have all your curriculum resources available from anywhere: FLEX Curriculum

Alternate Paint Ideas

homework art school

Unfortunately, many students will not have access to paint at home. Consider using this as a time for exploration to introduce students to new types of paint. Challenge students to think about what natural materials they might have, much like the people creating cave art might have used.  Try some of these homemade paint options:

  • Painting with Coffee
  • Fruit and Vegetable Paint
  • Paint Made with Spices
  • Food Coloring Watercolors

Found Object Ideas

homework art school

Found object artmaking is a medium that has been explored by artists throughout the ages. Let your students’ creativity flow by creating with the objects they have around them.

Here is a list of found objects that might help inspire your students. Try one of these found object ideas:

  • Found Object Color Wheel: Using the objects found throughout one’s home, have students collect as many colored objects as they can to create a color wheel. It will become a fun challenge to see how many different objects in different hues one can find at their home.
  • Andy Goldsworthy Found Object Nature Ideas
  • Found Object Cityscape Printmaking Lesson Plan

3-D Lesson Ideas

homework art school

Planning activities and lessons for 3-D classes like ceramics and sculpture might present an extra challenge. It won’t be very easy to truly emulate the happenings of a ceramics class without clay at home. Maybe, you’ll get lucky, and you can send each student home with a pound of clay, but this won’t be the case for everyone. Instead, get creative and keep it simple. Here are some ideas to consider.

  • Create temporary sculptures with household items. Have your students photograph them, and use them as a drawing inspiration. When you eventually get back to the classroom, students can recreate their sculptures with other materials.
  • Have your students create stop-motion videos using clay-like material. This can be done with clay, play-doh, or even cookie dough.
  • Paper Pottery
  • Cardboard Sculptures

Here are some additional clay recipes your students can try to make their own homemade clay:

  • Baking Soda Clay

Lessons with Limited Supplies

When it comes to limited supplies, drawing is going to be the best way to have our students find success. They can simply draw with the materials they have, any type of mark-making and paper will do the trick.

Use these drawing prompts to continue your students’ drawing skills.

  • 100 Silly Drawing Prompts
  • 100 Sketchbook Prompts eBook
  • 100 Sketchbook Prompts
  • Finish the Picture Prompts

Observational Drawing

Now is the perfect time to refine observational drawing skills. To encourage your students to take note of the world around them, encourage them to participate in the “ View From My Day ” drawing challenge.

Other Drawing Activities:

  • Turn Your Markers into Paint
  • Stuffed Animal Drawings
  • Drawing the Human Form
  • Digital Drawing Ideas
  • Visual Journaling Ideas
  • Line Drawing Lessons

Additional Art Challenges to Engage Your Students

Use and adapt these art challenges to fit the needs of your students.

  • Summer Art Challenge
  • Supply Challenge
  • Snow Day Challenge

These lists are just a few ideas to help you create lessons or art from home. Just as in times of uncertainty, there are no silver bullets or definitive answers, but there are often options. As art educators, you do have options at your fingertips; at AOEU, we are here to help you find them.

What are your go-to options when schools close?

How do your students respond with a variety or lack of options?

It was previously known as Kuznetsk until 1931, and as Stalinsk until 1961.

Founded in 1618 by men from Tomsk as a Cossack ostrog (fort) on the Tom River , it was initially called Kuznetsky ostrog ( Кузне́цкий острог ). [2] It became the seat of Kuznetsky Uyezd in 1622. [3] Kuznetsk ( Кузне́цк ) was granted town status in 1689. [3] It was here that Fyodor Dostoevsky married his first wife, Maria Isayeva in 1857. [13] Joseph Stalin 's rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union transformed the sleepy town into a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s. It merged with Sad Gorod in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, the city was known as Novokuznetsk and between 1932 and 1961 as Stalinsk ( Ста́линск ), after Stalin. As a result of de-Stalinization , it was renamed back to Novokuznetsk .

As of the 2021 Census , the ethnic composition of Novokuznetsk was: [14]

[15] As a municipal division , Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction is incorporated as the Novokuznetsky Urban Okrug . [15] [16]

Five Back to School Horror Movies to Stream This Week

' src=

School is starting to get back in session for many, hammering in one of the final nails of summer’s coffin. It’s fitting that the new school year heralds in the arrival of Fall; few things are scarier than the hells of school. Students must deal with homework, teachers, parents, social structures, and puberty. Teachers must contend with unruly students, their unrulier parents, grading, and office stresses. And high school is a hell of its own.

Luckily, horror covers the terrors of school from every perspective, young and old alike. This week’s streaming picks head back to school to exploit all the academic anxieties and fears.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Battle Royale – freevee, Hoopla, Kanopy, Pluto TV, Tubi

Battle Royale

Thanks to a government-mandated act to control Japan’s disorderly youth, class 3-B has been selected to participate in the annual Battle Royale. The students are dropped on a remote island, provided with provisions, and given three days to slaughter each other until a single victor emerges. Those that refuse to cooperate have their explosive collars detonated. Pushed into slaying their classmates for a shot at survival results in a bloodbath. Battle Royale is ruthless, thrilling, and frequently tragic, as climbing the high school hierarchy takes on new violent meaning. High school has never been as savage or as disturbing.

Class of 1984 – Crackle, freevee, Kanopy, Midnight Pulp, Peacock, the Roku Channel, Screambox, Shout! TV, Tubi

Class of 1984

An exploitation film for the teachers. Class of 1984 , directed by Mark Lester and co-written by Tom Holland and John Saxton, follows Andrew Norris (Perry King), the new music teacher at a troubled inner-city school. Andrew is surprised to find his new school comes features metal detectors, graffiti-covered walls, and armed teachers, but that’s before he meets the student gang terrorizing the halls. When he attempts to exert authority over the hoodlums, they viciously attack his wife, prompting a shocking escalation of violence and vengeance. Reagan-era paranoia fuels this lurid thriller based on the 1954 novel The Blackboard Jungle . Look for Roddy McDowell as a fellow teacher and Michael J. Fox as one of the school’s few innocent kids.

Cooties – Pluto TV, Tubi

cooties

Aspiring writer Clint Hadson (Elijah Wood) thinks his first day as a substitute teacher in his hometown of Fort Chicken is off to a rough start, thanks to awkward encounters with the faculty. Then contaminated chicken nuggets cause a mysterious viral outbreak that transforms the children into feral zombies. Co-written by Leigh Whannell,  Cooties showcases the frustrations of being a teacher, from the office politics to dealing with gross student germs. Emphasis on gross in this over-the-top zombie comedy. The stellar cast is more than up to the task of playing hilarious and unwitting horror heroes, but Whannell himself steals every scene as the socially inept science teacher.

The Faculty – Paramount+

faculty movie

From director Robert Rodriguez and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, this late ’90s teen horror movie dissects high school’s social hierarchy with an insanely fun sci-fi horror premise that wears its influences on its sleeves. For Harrington High, school got much weirder when a parasitic alien began taking over the faculty and student body one by one. Nerdy-type Casey (Elijah Wood), loner Stokely (Clea Duvall), cheerleader Delilah (Jordana Brewster), football player Stan (Shawn Hatosy), drug dealer Zeke (Josh Hartnett), and new girl Marybeth (Laura Harris) team up to fight back against the invaders. Paranoia and mayhem ensue to an infectiously fun degree.

Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II – AMC+, Crackle, Peacock, Shudder, Tubi, Vudu

Hello Mary Lou Prom Night 2

In director Bruce Pittman’s wild cult sequel, initially conceived as a standalone horror movie, high school mean girl and prom queen Mary Lou Maloney (Lisa Schrage) accidentally burns to death shortly after getting her prom queen crown and returns 30 years later to seek revenge on the men responsible: Principal Billy (Michael Ironside) and Father Cooper (Richard Monette). But a ghost with a vengeance on her mind needs a victim. Enter virginal teen Vicki (Wendy Lyon). Hello Mary Lou dials up the absurdity and weirdness of teen hormones, featuring a horny mean girl ghost and outlandish scare tactics- including a memorable carousel horse of nightmares.
