Module 13: Retail Image: Layout and Visual Merchandising

Every display method a retailer uses for his merchandise has its benefits and drawbacks. When choosing a type of display, one should consider if the display works for the type of store layout and the kind of environment you’ve created for the shopping experience.

Let’s look at each type now and determine where it will succeed and where it might fail.

End caps are very successful in grid layouts. Grocery stores and big box retailers use end caps to promote brands and celebrate seasons in their stores. They’re eye catching, and the space is easily “leased” to manufacturers that want to promote their brand.

The drawback of an end cap is its ability to be seen. If aisles end too close to a wall, the end cap may make walking space too narrow. And depending on where the aisle ends, the shopper may not even turn toward it as she follows her traffic flow path through the store.

Window Displays

Probably the most fun a merchandiser will have is creating a window display—it’s artistic and expressive and fun, and retailers can leverage your window space to tell outsiders what they can expect in their stores. Funky and hip? Serious and elegant? Your store window starts telling the story of the shopper’s experience before she’s even inside.

The drawback is that your window display, while taking up quite a bit of square footage at times, doesn’t always move product. The mannequin that wears a pink sweater might attract the shopper to come in the door, but because the product can’t be displayed adjacent to the mannequin in the window (and shoppers can’t go in there and browse), it’s not always going to sell your merchandise directly.

Promotional Aisles

This is the space you trip over when you walk into Target or Meijer, that little cove of space they didn’t know what else to do with. They filled it with junky stuff and put a bunch of bright colored signs up so the customer can shop it and get excited over the big values he’s finding. People often come just to shop these areas—they need trinkets for an event or they want to buy the kids something fun. They can be a draw for a shopper all by themselves.

The drawback of the promotional aisle is that it doesn’t really work for every kind of retailer. Target can use it well, but a Chanel store isn’t going to have one of these types of displays. And not every retailer wants to convey “cheap fun” as a part of their brand statement.

In-aisle Promotions

A store with a grid layout will almost always use an in-aisle promotion. Why is that? Well, grid layouts are for stores that carry a lot of product, so if a retailer is doing a sale they’re not going to be able to give every sale item its own display. Shelf tags and shelf talkers are a great alternative, drawing attention as the shopper browses.

The drawback of this display is that it’s not really a display, and therefore not as visible as the other types we’re talking about here. And, of course, if the store isn’t a grid (or at least a mixed) layout, it’s a bit harder to execute—but not entirely impossible.

Shippers are great little attention getters in a wide aisle, as they’re usually colorful and eye-catching, and stocked full of something the shopper didn’t know he wanted. Because you can put them right in a common traffic flow path, they’re always going to act like a “speed bump” and slow shoppers down to take a look.

The drawback of this kind of display is that it’s cheap. Shippers are usually made of cardboard and shipped flat, and, after a team member struggles for an hour or two trying to get it all put together, they sit out where they’re touched, bumped, and abused by customers. You’ll never see these in a higher-end store (unless it’s a high-end shipper!) On top of that, they take up valuable aisle space, which a small retailer might not have to give.

Dump bins scream “find deeply discounted items here!” The shopper understands that some amount of effort will need to be spent to find the right size, the right color, the right title, but she dives in willingly, because it’s part of the game. We are reminded again and again that shopping is an experience, and the dump bin is a discount experience all its own.

The drawback is that this type of display implies discount . . . and not necessarily quality. Higher-end stores may not want to move in that direction because they don’t want to send that kind of message to their shoppers – even if they have a product that would work in a dump bin. Also, dump bins take up a lot of aisle space too, so, like shippers, they may not work for a smaller store.

Point of Sale/Point of Purchase Displays

Point of sale displays get shoppers with that last little item they didn’t know they wanted or needed. Whether it’s a pack of gum or a cooking magazine, retailers get one more opportunity to add to the final ticket.

Even in its drawbacks there are pluses. Moms have forever complained about candy in the checkout aisles at the grocery store, but that gave grocery stores the opportunity to offer something to Moms by having a couple of “candy free” check out aisles. Few retailers miss the opportunity to do this. Those that do . . . and Apple comes to mind . . . are offering a different kind of check-out experience.

McDonald's selection process • McDonald's, selection process is very systematic and comprises of 3 stages 1. Aptitude Testing and Initial Interview- after screening the applicants' resumes, the short-listed candidates are called for a psychometric evaluation [a written aptitude test] and initial interview. The aptitude test gives insights into the applicants' verbal reasoning and critical reasoning amongst other important aptitude measures.

2. On the Job Evaluation [OJE] -Short-listed candidates undergo a 2-day OJE at a McDonald's restaurant, which provides the candidate with an opportunity to look at McDonald's as a potential employer. It also gives McDonald's a chance to observe and assess the candidate's performance. 3. Final Interview -all candidates who attend the OJE are called for the final interview. This is where the final and overall assessment of the candidate takes place and selection decisions are made.

Basic Shift Management [BSM] The BSM takes place at the Trainee Manager level. It addresses the 'whys' and 'how tos' of McDonald's procedures and standards, rather than 'what-to-dos' or 'what-to knows'. It also deepens the candidates understanding of operational skills, standards and procedures.

Advanced Shift Management [ASM]The ASM is intended for a Second Assistant Manager. It develops the manager's ability. Systems Management Course [SMC]The SMC is an opportunity for First Assistant Managers to gain knowledge of recognizing various real-world problems within the restaurant and the different approaches in analyzing and resolving them.

Restaurant Leadership Programme [RLP]RLP focuses on the skills and behaviours necessary to drive business results within a McDonald's restaurant environment. This includes a focus on leadership skills, team building, decision-making strategies, and problem solving. RLP is designed for the promotable First Assistant Manager.

Recognition and Rewards: • Competitive wage and promotion programmes • Restaurant-wide recognition through programmes such as the Employee of the Month' and ‘Employee of the Quarter'. • McDonald's also offers a centralised incentive programme, called MahaBucks, with access to McDonald's gift certificates and branded merchandise.

Intel lays off 15% of its staff and its stock tumbles as it struggles to turn around its ailing business

Intel is slashing 15% of its staff as part of a $10 billion plan to reduce costs, the tech company announced in its second-quarter earnings Thursday.

“Simply put, we must align our cost structure with our new operating model and fundamentally change the way we operate,” CEO Pat Gelsinger wrote in a memo Thursday. “Our revenues have not grown as expected — and we’ve yet to fully benefit from powerful trends, like AI. Our costs are too high, our margins are too low.”

The company reported revenue of $12.8 billion in the second quarter – down 1% from the year prior – and an income loss of $1.6 billion.

Intel, once the world’s most dominant chipmaker with a stranglehold on PCs and Macs, has fallen far from its lofty peak in recent years. The mobile computing wave of the past two decades caught the company off guard, and it has since been surpassed in market value by Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, which are leaders in mobile chips.

But Intel also missed out on the AI wave. The chipmaker is struggling to keep up with powerhouse rival Nvidia, which has become one of the most valuable public companies in the world off the artificial intelligence boom. Intel’s heaviest losses were in its chip-making Foundry business, which it has heavily invested in 2024 “ for the AI era .”

Intel is at an important moment in time for chipmaking amid US investments into domestic manufacturing for chipmaking and a global demand for AI chips.

“Intel’s announcement of a significant cost-cutting plan including layoffs may bolster its near-term financials, but this move alone is insufficient to redefine its position in the evolving chip market,” Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne said.

Intel is also placing a risky bet on changing its entire business model. It wants to manufacture competitors’ processors, serving as a kind of white label factory for companies like Apple, which designs its own silicon chips but outsources the manufacturing. Taiwan’s TSMC is currently the leader in global chipmaking, so Intel is betting the world – and in particular the US government – would embrace another reliable chip manufacturer. But that plan will be enormously expensive, and the hard pivot will cost thousands of workers their jobs.

The company is holding out hope that the AI investments will pay off. Intel wants to spend tens of billions of dollars less, cut 15,000 jobs, and reduce operating expenses to “sustain investments to build a resilient and sustainable semiconductor supply chain in the United States and around the world,” it said in its earnings statement.

Intel wants to cut the $10 billion by 2025.

Intel will also suspend its dividend starting the fourth quarter of 2024, which means it has halted payments it was planning to give shareholders. Intel shares dropped 19% in after-hours trading.

Other tech earnings falter

Amazon’s sales grew 10% last quarter and its operating profit nearly doubled, the company said Thursday.

But the company’s guidance disappointed investors, sending its stock down 5% during after-hours trading.

“Amazon will remain very profitable, but the pace at which it can add to the bottom line appears to be waning,” Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients.

Love the game; I’d love more features added

I love the game it’s very fun. I’ve sunk in a good chunk of time and I’ve unlocked almost everything but expansion because I’m greedy and don’t want to drop 5-20k on expanding my store. Just holding out for item updates. I really like the new upgrades it had; such as hiring a cashier and the implementation of fire. I was wondering if you could add a feature to remove an item? Sometimes I’ll stick one thing by accident in the freezer or shelf and I have to wait for it to sell to stock a different item there. I also thought a clearance shelf might solve this? Where a variety of items that tend to be spares could be placed on a clearance shelf, but in reality it’s just overstock. Or a storage area instead that can be placed permanently behind the cashier area; or wherever honestly. I just have an abundance of boxes everywhere all the time.

I'm honestly LOVING this game right now! I'm literally hooked on this game right now. But, there's definitely some room for improvement! I love the fact that there's fires and that your floor can get so dirty that customers don't wanna shop there 😂. But I just feel like there could be more, ya know? Like I wanna feel like I HAVE to run the store to keep bills paid, the lights and stuff like that. I want customers to have an opinion on my item prices being too high just to feel like more of a manager. And I want to be able to have a storage, yes you can close the boxes and use the truck but you have to throw them. I wanna be able to stack them neatly. And also hire people. Or open other stores around the area so I can have multiple places to run, like one in the day time and one at night. And I think that you should be able to click your cart to see what you’re going to order before you actually place your order. I also think that when the fires happen, they shouldn’t be able to steal. They should put everything that they wanted to buy back on the shelves. So that won’t just be money out my pocket. Unless you wanted to add the element of customers getting away with things 😂. I also think there should be a burglar you should have to try and keep out. I just feel like there’s so much that could be added to this game! But don’t get me wrong, I love it! I just think there could be improvements. Thank you so much for making it! 😁‼️

I love the game and it’s honestly really addicting! Yes, there are ads, just like any other free game out there, and although I could pay for the no ads version, I honestly don’t mind them because at least it gives you the option to skip most of them. The reason I gave it a three star rating though is because the delivery wait time. I get the concept, because it’s trying to imitate delivery time from real life to in game, but I just can’t stand it most of the time, because when I run out of items in the store and need a refill right away, you end up waiting and waiting and waiting. It’s a little annoying, and yes you can spend energy to speed up the wait time, but then after spending up all the energy, you end up with little energy to spend on other useful things. You can pay for more with real money of course, but I’m the type of person that likes playing a free game without having to pay money in game. It’s really annoying having to watch ads just to get more energy or an income boost, but the most annoying thing about the game is the delivery wait time. When playing the Supermarket Simulator Steam version, the moment you buy your products it instantly spawns in without having to wait for it. Of course, this game is just fun to play on the go, but it would be more fun if there wasn’t a wait time for deliveries. Hopefully the developer can consider this, and then I’d for sure give this a full 5 stars. Please make it so there’s no wait time for deliveries.
