How Did Mr. Krabs Die & Who Killed Him? SpongeBob SquarePants Explained

SpongeBob SquarePants has been around since 1999, airing more than 270 episodes. So, it’s safe to say that it’s part of a lot of people’s childhood. However, the sweet nostalgia might have disappeared when, in Aug. 2021, the fans thought Mr. Krabs, one of the most popular characters, had died in the show. Is Mr. Krabs Dead in SpongeBob SquarePants?

Well, he didn’t actually die in a SpongeBob episode . The internet played one of its tricks on the fans of the Nickelodeon show as a PDF titled The Trial of SpongeBob SquarePants started circulating, and the document describes a crime scene that involves Mr. Krabs being found dead inside Krusty Krab.

The character was allegedly killed by a metal spatula, and the two-page PDF states SpongeBob , Plankton, and Squidward as the potential suspects. Since the document is about a trial, there are even witness testimonies from Patrick and Sandy Cheeks. However, there’s no verdict nor a conclusion in the document.

The document’s origin traces back to SPS186.org, the website for Springfield, Illinois, public school District 186. Later on, a second version of the document with 11 pages surfed the internet, including instructions to split a class into defense and prosecution teams. Hence, it could simply be a school project that went viral by accident.

Nonetheless, it certainly scared the most alert fans and sparked many theories. Moreover, the fact that Nickelodeon pulled an episode of the show around this time didn’t help and led many to believe that “Kwarantined Crab,” the episode in question (episode 21 of season 12), featured the character’s death. Yet, the network attributes the removal of the episode to its similarities with COVID-19.

College graduate shares SpongeBob essay that got her into USC and UCLA

When it comes to applying to colleges, there are few tasks more daunting than writing admissions essays — and this TikToker may have crafted the most creative one yet.

Kalissa Persaud ( @kalissapersaud ), a TikToker with 36,400 followers and 6.7 million likes, recently took to the digital platform to share her essay that earned her acceptances at two competitive colleges.

“OK, this is the SpongeBob essay that got me into USC and UCLA.”

She begins by outlining the estimated number of times she’s watched the hit Nickelodeon series.

“If I had to estimate, I’d say I’ve watched every episode of SpongeBob SquarePants at least eight times. I’ve watched The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie more than a hundred times.”

Kalissa then explains the impact the Bikini Bottom resident has had on her life.

“I speak candidly when I say SpongeBob is my hero.”

She continues, “Hearing chuckles and seeing contorted faces when I declare this is inevitable, but nonetheless, I say it with the utmost confidence and candor every time. And why shouldn’t I? I’ve devoted 13 years of my life to this sponge.”

At just 4 years old, Kalissa reveals she would run into her apartment and “beg my grandma to let me watch SpongeBob instead of her melodramatic Bollywood movies .”

She then acknowledges that while the animated television show is absurd, it brought her great comfort growing up.

“Being myself has never been an issue for me, but believing in myself was, especially in my first year of high school,” she admits.

“I was stuck in a rut. I felt mediocre all the time. Whenever I thought of any scenario, my mind made a list of every little thing that could go wrong even if it was completely irrational.”

Luckily, thanks to the SpongeBob SquarePants episode in which the titular character serves a ridiculous amount of customers on his first day as a fry cook, Kalissa had a crucial realization.

“If SpongeBob could serve a thousand anchovies on his first day, I could definitely try and gain some lost confidence back.”

After acknowledging that SpongeBob may be responsible for her passion for acting, Kalissa concluded her unique essay with a quote from the iconic, optimistic sponge himself.

“In the words of Mr. SquarePants himself, ‘I’m ready!'”

Kalissa left a disclaimer in the comments, noting that she graduated from college “like two weeks ago” and had written this essay when she was 17.

“WAIT GUYS I GRADUATED COLLEGE LIKE TWO WEEKS AGO I WROTE THIS WHEN I WAS 17 IM 21 NOW JUST AN FYI,” she wrote in early February.

With 7.1 million views, 1.3 million likes and over 8950 comments, Kalissa’s essay has earned immense praise for its heartfelt message.

“Your writing??? Impeccable. And I love how proud you are at the end aahhhh,” gushed @yahvim .

“The transition from SpongeBob to high school was smooth asl,” commended @mikarasc .

“You’re so iconic,” wrote @vilcreates .

Dan Povenmire, an animator who worked on SpongeBob Squarepants during its run, also commented on the video.

“I so wish Steve Hillenberg was still with us. I would have sent him this and he would have been proud,” he wrote, in reference to the late SpongeBob creator.

As far as creative college admissions essays go, this is definitely one deserving of major praise.

SpongeBob SquarePants' new movie becomes a Netflix hit

Two other animated films also made the Top 10.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie , which arrived on Netflix last week, follows SpongeBob and Sandy Cheeks as they journey to Texas to save Bikini Bottom's residents from a villainous plot after they're suddenly scooped out of the ocean.

It’s currently the number one most-watched English-language movie on Netflix in the past week with 12.8 million views, proving the yellow sea sponge is still a hit with audiences over two decades since he made his TV debut on Nickelodeon back in 1999.

Two other animated children's movies also made the Global Top 10 list, including PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie , which is currently sitting at number two with 7 million views, while Trolls Band Together is number four with 5.9 million views.

Don't Breathe 2 , the follow-up to Rodo Sayagues' 2016 horror Don't breathe , is number three with just over 5.9 million views.

The Sandy Cheeks Movie is the fourth feature-length SpongeBob film, following The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Sponge Out of Water (2015) and Sponge on the Run (2020).

In other SpongeBob news, it was recently confirmed that Bikini Bottom's favourite resident is autistic .

At the 2024 Motor City Comic Con in Detroit, Tom Kenny, who has voiced SpongeBob since 1999, recalled the time he was approached by a fan "on the spectrum" who asked if SpongeBob was autistic.

"It was the first time I'd ever been asked this question," he told the crowd. "A person who was obviously on the spectrum came up to me and said: 'I have a question for you, Tom Kenny. Is SpongeBob autistic?'"

Kenny then recalled answering: "'Of course!' I said: 'You know what? That's his superpower, the same way that's your superpower'."

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of Nickelodeon’s most successful and popular animated TV shows ever, and though it’s also one of the most rewatchable cartoons, there are some harsh realities when watching season 1 again. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999 , and has been unstoppable ever since. The success of the show made way for a franchise with movies, spin-offs, video games, and more, but the main show continues growing with more seasons. SpongeBob SquarePants takes viewers to the underwater town of Bikini Bottom to follow the title character and his friends.

SpongeBob, his best friends Patrick and Sandy, his greedy boss Mr. Krabs, and his neighbor Squidward continue to get involved in all types of adventures and fun situations, but the series has definitely changed over the years. The show’s sense of humor isn’t the same as it was in its first seasons and the characters’ personalities have also changed a lot, yet SpongeBob SquarePants still has a loyal fanbase. The first season of SpongeBob SquarePants will always be special and fun, but some harsh realities come to light when rewatching it 25 years later.

10 SpongeBob & Patrick Don’t Respect Squidward At All

Squidward’s limits weren’t respected.

No matter how many limits Squidward established, SpongeBob and Patrick rarely respected them and even put Squidward at risk.

The strongest friendship in SpongeBob SquarePants is that between SpongeBob and Patrick, and what adds extra fun to it is their relationship with Squidward. Their unfriendly neighbor isn’t fond of them and their adventures, which is why he keeps his distance and does his best to avoid any interaction with SpongeBob and Patrick, including at work. However, no matter how many limits Squidward established, SpongeBob and Patrick rarely respected them and even put Squidward at risk on multiple occasions. While this has continued throughout the whole series, it was very evident throughout the first season.

The episode “Jellyfishing” is a good example of this, when an injured and bandaged Squidward returned home from the hospital and was forced by SpongeBob to go jellyfishing with him and Patrick, despite having been hurt by a queen jellyfish. In “SB-129”, Squidward refused to go jellyfishing with them, but they insisted so much that he had to hide inside the Krusty Krab’s freezer. While Squidward isn’t a good neighbor either and has done some cruel stuff to SpongeBob and Patrick as well (such as when he messed with their friendship for fun), SpongeBob and Patrick aren’t respectful of his personal space .

9 SpongeBob Went Through Lengths To Impress Sandy (& Didn’t Have To)

Spongebob really wanted to impress his new friend.

SpongeBob and Sandy met in the episode “Tea at the Treedome”, and SpongeBob was intrigued by the type of animal Sandy was, and throughout the whole season, he did a lot of things, sometimes extreme, to impress her. In that first episode, he pretended to like air even though he had no idea what it was (and Sandy ignoring that SpongeBob needed water created a plot hole). In “Ripped Pants”, he did what the title says while trying to impress Sandy by lifting heavy weights, and carried on with the joke of ripping his pants to make her laugh until he took it too far.

Sandy Cheeks' first appearance in SpongeBob SquarePants is funny but makes way for a dumb plot hole that fans have pointed out many times.

SpongeBob didn’t have to go to lengths to impress Sandy as she accepted him as her friend just as he was.

In “MuscleBob BuffPants”, SpongeBob bought fake arms with inflatable muscles to impress Sandy after seeing how strong she and Larry were. This led Sandy to enroll him in a weightlifting competition, where he obviously failed. SpongeBob didn’t have to go to lengths to impress Sandy as she accepted him as her friend just as he is, and he only ended up publicly humiliating himself and putting his friendship with Sandy at risk by not being authentic – and that’s a great message for young viewers.

8 SpongeBob & Patrick Believed They Killed Squidward

Spongebob & patrick thought they had gone too far.

Looking back, it’s actually pretty dark that SpongeBob and Patrick thought they had killed their friend.

In the episode “Squidward The Unfriendly Ghost”, SpongeBob and Patrick thought they had done something horrible: killed Squidward. SpongeBob and Patrick were playing frisbee with a shell and it hit Squidward’s wax sculpture of himself while Squidward took a relaxing bath. SpongeBob and Patrick entered Squidward’s house to retrieve the shell and saw the sculpture, believing it was the real Squidward and they had accidentally killed him. Looking back, it’s actually pretty dark that SpongeBob and Patrick thought they had killed their friend and all their failed attempts to revive him.

What’s also dark about this episode is how Squidward took advantage of SpongeBob and Patrick’s concern and fear and posed as a ghost. Not only that, but he used SpongeBob and Patrick as his slaves as punishment for “killing” him, but later, SpongeBob and Patrick tried to bury him so his soul could rest and he no longer was a ghost. Despite its comedic moments, looking back after all these years, this is a dark episode.

7 Pearl Cared Too Much About Others’ Opinions & Was Rude To SpongeBob

Spongebob helped pearl & she didn’t care.

Pearl cared way too much about others’ opinions, particularly her friends, and was constantly looking to have the same things as them.

Mr. Krabs’ spoiled daughter, Pearl, made her debut in the episode “Squeaky Boots”, where she was devastated after her father gave her a pair of old boots as a birthday present instead of the fancy shoes her friends had. Pearl cared way too much about others’ opinions, particularly her friends, and was constantly looking to have the same things as them, to be trendy and fit in. While this is understandable from a (spoiled) teenager, the way she treated SpongeBob when he accompanied her to her prom was plain rude .

In “The Chaperone”, SpongeBob was asked by Mr. Krabs to take Pearl to prom after she and her boyfriend broke up, and SpongeBob did his best to look tall, dark, and handsome. Despite SpongeBob’s efforts to be a good date, Pearl was continually rude to him and didn’t want anyone to see them together, but SpongeBob won everyone over with his good attitude and dance moves. Although Pearl admitted at the end that she had fun, she almost ruined the experience for SpongeBob, too.

One of SpongeBob SquarePants' biggest mysteries is the identity of Pearl's mother, but it has already been addressed in other canon material.

6 Patrick Is Very Materialistic

Patrick valued gifts more than friendship.

SpongeBob and Patrick have been friends for years, but there are some things in their friendship that are pretty toxic. In the episode “Valentine’s Day”, SpongeBob, with Sandy’s help, set up a Valentine’s Day surprise for Patrick: a huge hot-air balloon entirely made of chocolate. SpongeBob took Patrick to a Valentine’s Day-themed park to spend the day together and prepare him for his surprise, but Patrick was not only impatient but also turned out to be very materialistic. Patrick was constantly asking what his gift was and, at one point, believed the park was his gift.

Patrick overreacted and completely forgot about everything SpongeBob had already done for him that day.

While all this made for a fun episode, it took a turn when SpongeBob had to improvise while Sandy fought scallops that wanted to eat the balloon and gave Patrick a friendly handshake. Patrick was extremely upset and destroyed the park, and calmed down once he saw the balloon . Patrick overreacted and completely forgot about everything SpongeBob had already done for him that day, and forgot the most important thing: presents aren’t what’s important, it’s his strong bond with SpongeBob .

5 Squidward Enjoyed Humiliating SpongeBob In Public

Squidward took his “pranks” too far.

Squidward took his hatred for SpongeBob too far during April Fool's Day.

As mentioned above, Squidward wasn’t a good neighbor either, as he also meddled in SpongeBob and Patrick’s friendship just to mess with them, but he took his hatred for SpongeBob too far during April Fool's Day. SpongeBob loved April Fool’s Day and spent the day playing various harmless pranks on everyone at the Krusty Krab. Squidward got very annoyed at SpongeBob’s pranks and laughter and decided to pull his own prank – the problem was that Squidward went too far and his “prank” was cruel and made to publicly humiliate SpongeBob .

Squidward left SpongeBob physically and emotionally hurt in front of everyone at the Krusty Krab, with SpongeBob running home crying. Even the people at the Krusty Krab who saw the whole thing and had been targets of SpongeBob’s pranks let Squidward know they weren’t ok with what he had just done. Squidward had the hardest time apologizing as he wasn’t being sincere until he finally truly felt remorse for what he had done. Squidward truly found it satisfying and funny to humiliate SpongeBob in front of everyone, which is very dark for a children’s TV show.

4 Plankton Taking Over SpongeBob’s Brain Was Disturbing

Plankton went to extremes to get the secret formula.

Plankton got into SpongeBob’s head and installed a mind control device through which he could manipulate him as he pleased.

Plankton made his debut in SpongeBob SquarePants in the episode simply titled “Plankton!”, and he wasted no time in showing how far he’s willing to go to get the secret formula of the Krabby Patty . Plankton tried to trick SpongeBob into giving him a Krabby Patty, but SpongeBob refused, so Plankton went too far: he got into SpongeBob’s head and installed a mind control device through which he could manipulate him as he pleased. Plankton forced SpongeBob to go to the Krusty Krab, prepare a Krabby Patty, and take it to the Chum Bucket.

There, Plankton planned to drop the Krabby Patty into a device that could analyze every single ingredient, but SpongeBob was stronger. In the end, Plankton lept out of SpongeBob’s head to land on the Krabby Patty but missed and fell into the analyzer. Plankton taking over SpongeBob’s brain is actually quite disturbing as it’s unbelievably invasive and evil , and though it’s played for laughs in SpongeBob SquarePants , it’s actually a pretty sensitive subject when compared to real-life actions like gaslighting and other forms of manipulation.

3 Mermaid Man’s Mental Health Problems Aren’t Funny

SpongeBob’s heroes Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy made their first appearance in the episode appropriately titled “Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy”. In it, Squidward told SpongeBob and Patrick that Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy lived in a retirement home, and they went to meet their heroes. SpongeBob and Patrick wanted to bring them out of retirement, but Mermaid Man and Barnacle only wanted to watch TV in peace. Mermaid Man and Barnacle decided to treat SpongeBob and Patrick as villains to force them away, and they succeeded.

Since their first appearance, SpongeBob SquarePants made it clear that Mermaid Man had some mental health problems due to his old age, as he was often confused, had no idea where he was, and didn’t recognize people he had just been talking to . Mermaid Man’s health is played for laughs throughout his entire history in SpongeBob SquarePants , but it’s a very sensitive subject, and how the show used it is quite disrespectful.

2 Squidward’s Animal Abuse Against Gary

Squidward said he would look after Gary, but didn’t even pay attention to SpongeBob’s instructions because he didn’t care.

Despite Squidward’s efforts to not get involved with SpongeBob in any shape or form, SpongeBob needed his help once, and he was terrible at it. In “I Was a Teenage Gary”, SpongeBob had to go to an event with Patrick but had no one to look after Gary. Hearing that SpongeBob and Patrick would be leaving for a couple of days, Squidward said he would look after Gary, but didn’t even pay attention to SpongeBob’s instructions because he didn’t care. Squidward ended up completely forgetting about Gary, leaving him without food and water for days .

What Squidward did to Gary was a form of animal abuse, and it’s obviously a form of animal cruelty, too . Squidward’s hatred for SpongeBob is understandable to an extent, but Gary was innocent and shouldn’t have been mistreated, more so when Squidward offered to look after him. Squidward had a very easy task, but once more, his selfishness and ego took over and an innocent pet paid for it. Luckily, Gary recovered shortly after.

1 The Not-So-Subtle Sex References Through Karate

The episode “Karate Choppers” was the first time SpongeBob and Sandy’s love for this art was shown, and it continued to be a constant activity between them. However, this episode in particular has some not-so-subtle sex references that become very obvious when rewatching SpongeBob SquarePants season 1 as an adult. Karate, for some reason, wasn’t well seen by those around SpongeBob and Sandy, particularly Mr. Krabs, especially after they started to scare customers at the Krusty Krab.

The scene at the park, where SpongeBob and Sandy were preparing a picnic after promising Mr. Krabs they wouldn’t do more karate, was very heavy on sex references. SpongeBob and Sandy’s behavior in that specific scene has been compared by viewers to that of sex addicts , and the part where SpongeBob and Sandy were lying down after all the karate was also a not-subtle-at-all sex reference. This episode has been called out for this, and though these references won’t be obvious to young viewers, it’s hard to unsee them as an adult.

Bikini Bottom is one of the most colorful settings in animation history, and that's mostly because the place is filled to the brim with lively residents. SpongeBob SquarePants ' first three seasons are extremely rewatchable , and a large proportion of its humor is character-driven. The inhabitants of this nautical neighborhood are so wonderfully conceived that it's difficult to imagine this legendary show without any of them, even the minor ones. It feels pretty silly to try and rank them, as they're so lovable to people of all ages for so many reasons that it feels like comparing apples to oranges, bananas, strawberries, etc.

Nevertheless, Stephen Hillenburg 's brilliant brainchild produced such iconic personalities that it warrants an examination of what makes some of the greatest ones age so well 25 years after their debut. Ranking them is not just a matter of versatility, as even background characters like Fred the Fish are used in a variety of ways. It's also not just a matter of hilarity, as calling the eponymous sponge funnier than his next-door neighbors is a matter of taste and context. Maybe the best way to put it is that the 10 best characters in this incredible sitcom complement its wild, wacky, intelligent, and surreal environment in the most significant (and/or unique) ways.

10 Mrs. Puff

One of the most underrated characters on the show , Mrs. Puff ( Mary Jo Catlett ) probably has the least coveted relationship with SpongeBob. Not only does she have to keep teaching him in boating school year after year (because he never passes), but she also has to conduct consistently dangerous boating exams that put her in harm's way. This often leads to her puffing up ("Oh, SpongeBob. WHYYY?") and going to the hospital for the injuries sustained during the inevitable crash.

This understandably makes this patient pufferfish go a little crazy, like when she gives SpongeBob a ridiculous amount of extra credit just to get rid of him, or when she simply hallucinates an entire episode. When she gets relieved of her instructing duties for not being able to teach the unteachable sponge, she immediately becomes the other kind of relieved: "Free at last!" Mrs. Puff shows just how hard it is to be a teacher, functioning as one of the most hilariously relatable characters on the program.

If artificial intelligence does wind up taking over the world, then hopefully it will resemble Plankton's computer-wife, Karen ( Jill Talley ). Her nasally, mid-western accent somehow fits perfectly with the high-tech wasteland of The Chum Bucket, subverting the viewer's expectations of what an evil character can sound like. Whether she puts on a normal facial expression or just displays a zigzag on the screen, her extremely logical way of explaining a villainous plan makes Plankton's best episodes all the more original.

Plankton created her, and yet it seems she's a lot better at being a villain than he is. Without her, many installments in the series wouldn't even happen. For instance, Karen tells Plankton he should "befriend the SpongeBob" to get the Krabby Patty formula in "F.U.N." She also launches the plot for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie by giving her husband a simple alphabet lesson. It's also a gift to see her softer side, though, like when she tells Plankton that talking through his emotions will make him feel better. Karen may be made of metal, but this side character is pure gold.

8 Mermaid Man

Voiced by ernest borgnine.

Apparently, it's not all fish under the sea. Prime example: Mermaid Man ( Ernest Borgnine ) is apparently just a human who can somehow breathe underwater. He and his sidekick Barnacle Boy have a long history of fighting crime, and yet SpongeBob first meets them at Shady Shoals retirement home. Mermaid Man's mind clearly isn't as sharp as it used to be, making almost every word he says comedic brilliance. Along with his show that has no business airing new episodes, Mermaid Man can pop up on SpongeBob's television and make the viewer laugh at any given moment.

His powers aren't what they used to be either, yet he still walks through a cafeteria line with the enthusiasm of a superhero on patrol. It's also fantastic that he still thinks of Barnacle Boy as his young ward, even though they appear the same age. The best thing about this character, however, is that he screams "EVIL!" whenever the word is uttered. Rest in peace, Ernest Borgnine, for giving the world such a lovable character (merely one of his many accomplishments).

7 Sandy Cheeks

With Plankton's genius and SpongeBob's playfulness, Sandy's outgoing personality has made her a welcome part of the cast ever since her first episode. She's tough enough to wrestle a giant clam, get into the Salty Spitoon, and win a weightlifting competition. It's no surprise, then, that one of her favorite hobbies is karate-sparring with SpongeBob. This gifted squirrel built a treedome underwater, a special suit that helps her survive the ocean's conditions, and a rocket ship. Will she solve world hunger next?

Sandy is funniest once someone gets on her nerves, though. When Patrick kicks her in the leg in one of the best episodes of SpongeBob 's Golden Era , she goes completely berserk. Then there's the time when SpongeBob and Patrick make fun of Texas and wind up running for their lives. Sandy is proud of her roots, and she will compete in a series of dangerous underwater trials to prove land-creatures' worth. She certainly proves her worth to the show.

6 Sheldon J. Plankton

Plankton is one of those characters who's obsessed with one thing, and yet his character approaches his goal in such creative ways that it never gets old. Meanwhile, he's so tiny that even SpongeBob is liable to step on him by accident, which makes it difficult to take him seriously. Despite all the advanced gadgets he has built with his vastly superior intellect, including a sentient computer, Plankton can't cook to save his life. His single purpose, therefore, is to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula so that he can be as successful as his fast-food rival.

He also isn't good at speaking to the ordinary people. Case in point: he enters a bar to wrangle up some guys to help him get the formula, but the first words out of his mouth are "Felicitations, malefactors!" Watching Mr. Krabs repeatedly flick him out of the Krusty Krab is always a treat, and Plankton is especially entertaining when he's really mad (like when he forces SpongeBob to work for him). Plankton doesn't deserve to get his stubby hands on the formula, but he does deserve applause.

5 Mr. Krabs

Voiced by clancy brown.

Eugene Krabs ( Clancy Brown ) is SpongeBob's comically frugal boss at The Krusty Krab. He likes money so much that he's willing to shove his entire claw into a sink for a dime, detaching his arm in the process of pulling it out. He'll eat a visibly spoiled Krabby Patty so it doesn't go to waste. He has his first dollar earned framed on his wall, which he has SpongeBob paint for free. He'd rather get chomped by a giant clam than lose his millionth dollar.

An unapologetic capitalist and former chef at the S.S. Diarrhea, Mr. Krabs' rough voice and vocabulary (like "Arrgh") makes him sound half-sailor, half-pirate. He certainly seems more like the latter when he steals others' stuff. Whether he's on Squidward's side or not, his presence is integral to his iconic fast-food establishment. His rivalry with Plankton and tendency to embarrass his daughter add hilarious layers to a crab whose stubborn head is as hard as his shell.

He looks like a snail, he moves like a snail, but he sounds like a cat. He goes by Gary ( Tom Kenny ), and he is SpongeBob's beloved pet sea snail. Other than giving cat-people comfort in knowing that SpongeBob is one of them, Gary serves several important roles. He usually comes across as a less apathetic Squidward, though, largely indifferent to SpongeBob's situations and providing sound advice when asked. The variations in how he says "Meow" demonstrate many different emotions this impressive snail has.

Indeed, it appears that Gary is much smarter than his owner. This is especially fundamental to his success as a main character in episodes like "The Great Snail Race" and "Dumped." With those big, staring eyes, Gary is one of those characters who shows that the inability to speak only adds to their personality (or prrr-sonality). In fact, Gary is probably better than any other character at making the viewer laugh with nothing more than a silent, blank stare.

3 Patrick Star

Voiced by bill fagerbakke.

SpongeBob is so comically naïve that it takes an astoundingly dumb character to make him look savvy by comparison. This title, of course, belongs to Patrick Star ( Bill Fagerbakke ). Patrick is a perpetually unemployed starfish who lives under a rock (literally and figuratively) and has inexplicable thoughts about a milk carton spilling over on a table. Patrick's contribution to this show's absurdity is summed up by the Orb of Confusion, which he doesn't recover from even after it's switched off.

Among other things, Patrick tries to open a frozen door with magic, can't tell the difference between musical instruments and food products, and takes a hysterically long time to open a jar. There is probably no more satisfying scream of terror than Patrick's, like when SpongeBob's excessive cooking makes him fly out the door in the show's masterful pilot. One doesn't even need to watch Patrick's best episodes to realize that, of all the icons who fit into the heavy idiot archetype, he's one of the funniest.

2 Squidward Tentacles

Voiced by rodger bumpass.

Some say that a show is only as good as its straight man. Enter Squidward: the quintessential character of contrast. He hates SpongeBob so much that he says so explicitly on more than one occasion. In one episode, he even places the signs "No" and "Yes" on his front door, anticipating correctly that his next-door neighbor will ask him to play and then ask if he's sure. It goes to show that Squidward doesn't even need to physically appear to provide top-tier responses. Just as essentially, this makes his occasional demonstrations of kindness all the more heartwarming.

Squidward's understandable exasperation is perfect no matter what or whom he's responding to, but he's much more than the local grump. He is a passionate artist, and his superiority complex contrasts with his meager skills. He's not a great painter, clarinet player, or anything else, yet his aspirations to become famous make him a compelling and surprisingly sympathetic character. He is the best cashier above or below sea level, tentacles down.

1 SpongeBob SquarePants

He can drive a rock, a sandwich, an invisible boat-mobile, and even a normal boat with a blindfold on, but give him a normal vehicle and the ability to see, and he will crash. His name is SpongeBob SquarePants, fry cook extraordinaire. His infectious laugh, charming optimism, and hilarious naïveté come together to form a character who can make you crack up in so many ways that he's no less than one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time for his comedic chops alone.

He is also a sensitive sponge, though. The audience is always on his side whenever his feelings get hurt, yet he can still be funny while he's crying, like when he tells Squidward he made a sweater with his tears. The viewer can't help but find his extreme sensitivity and copious kindness endlessly amusing, and his hobbies (including karate and jellyfishing) add more to the sponge's charm. Of course, cheerful and sad are merely two of his many emotions. Every side of this yellow sponge is a joy to behold, really, but it would take another list to describe them all. Devoted fans of the show understand that, despite his shape, Mr. SquarePants is exceptionally well-rounded.
