Master of public health, mph (online).
The Department of Public Health offers an online MPH degree through the MPH@Baylor program. Only one major is currently offered through this online program, an MPH in Community Health Science. This 42-credit hour program can be completed between 12-24 months. The program includes two required 1-credit-hour public health immersion courses. The Public Health Immersion I course includes students coming to the campus of Baylor University in Waco, Texas for an immersion weekend consisting of invaluable interaction with peers and professors, training in interprofessional education (IPE) and collaboration skills, engagement in community health assessment activities, and early-stage training needed to begin developing ideas for the culminating graduate project that students must complete toward the end of the degree program. The Public Health Immersion II course trains students on how to develop a quality graduate project proposal in preparation for the culminating experience at the end of the program. The culminating project, which includes the completion of a 250-hour minimum internship experience, may be completed in an approved organization/agency and location. All courses, with the exception of the immersion weekend experience, are offered and completed fully online.
Courses in the online program are offered on a quarter system with course start dates occurring in January, April, July, and September. Students may enroll in 1-4 courses per quarter with 6 credit hours per quarter considered full-time. Students can choose to complete the program on a full-time or part-time basis. Students seeking to complete the program on an accelerated timeline must meet additional criteria and receive acceptance to this track during the admissions process. The time to complete varies based on the chosen track:
Applicants to the online MPH in Community Health Science program must have earned a Bachelor`s degree from an accredited institution in the United States, or proof of equivalent training at a foreign university. Additionally, applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree with a GPA that demonstrates strong academic success, which is normally 3.0 or higher.
There is no GRE requirement for this program. However, the GRE is recommended for applicants with less than 3 years of work experience or who have not previously attained a Master’s degree. Additionally, an optional essay will be available in the application for these candidates to state why previous coursework or work experience prepares them for the quantitative aspect of the program. Scores from the following exams can also be accepted: MCAT, LSAT, DAT, GMAT.
The admissions team accepts and reviews applications year-round on a rolling basis. Successful applicants possess backgrounds that demonstrate an ability to apply critical thinking skills to solve problems, collaborate with others and work on multidisciplinary teams, understand the importance of data-driven decision making, and embrace the significance of community engagement and cultural relevance in the health promotion process.

Clinical placement is a required educational component of Baylor’s online nursing programs. The hands-on learning, supervision and applying theory into practice prepare you for your future role in the field. Many students also find potential employment opportunities at their placement site upon graduation.
At Baylor, we believe you are only as successful as your training—that’s why we collaborate with our students to identify and secure sites and preceptors for all clinical rotations. Our staff will sort through the logistics of clinical placement so you can focus more on coursework and building competencies as a nurse.
As a newly enrolled student, you’ll partner with our clinical team to determine unique placement needs. We’ll collaborate with you to identify placement opportunities, including locating and securing a quality site and preceptor during your program. You’ll be responsible for several preparation tasks, including filling out forms, passing a drug screening, background check and proof of recommended vaccinations.
During your placement experience, you’ll have access to faculty and resources to support you on and off-site, including mentorship and guidance for procedures, patient interactions and proficiencies. At the end of your rotation, you and your preceptor will review requirements and complete any surveys. You may receive new details for your next clinical experience if you have multiple rotations.
Your preceptor is your on-site role model and will help you develop as a nurse during your clinical rotation. They will focus on helping you bridge gaps between theory and practice, orientate you to the practice setting, help you plan clinical assignments, provide 1:1 supervision, give daily feedback and complete required paperwork on your behalf.

Baylor establishes their contracts with institutions to provide us with one preceptor per student and sets requirements for the preceptors. I believe this will have a significant impact on the experience that we receive in the clinical learning environment.

A recent study led by Tamar Carter, Ph.D. , assistant professor of biology and tropical disease biologist at Baylor University, has uncovered critical insights into the spread of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito species, in the Horn of Africa. The findings, published in the Molecular Ecology , reveal how this mosquito, which can spread malaria, is establishing itself in new regions, posing a significant public health threat.
“Understanding the genetic structure and spread patterns of Anopheles stephensi is crucial for developing effective control strategies,” Carter said. “Our findings highlight the need for heightened surveillance and targeted vector control in identified hubs to combat the spread of malaria.”
This research provides vital information that can help target mosquito control efforts more effectively. By focusing on major hubs like Dire Dawa, public health officials can work to prevent future malaria outbreaks. The study underscores the importance of genetic analysis in tracking and managing the spread of invasive species.
“This study provides a valuable roadmap for public health interventions. By pinpointing key areas where the mosquito is most established, we can allocate resources more efficiently and protect vulnerable populations,” Carter said.
The research team emphasizes the need for continued monitoring and more extensive sampling to better understand the long-term impacts of Anopheles stephensi in the Horn of Africa. Integrating genomic and environmental analyses into future studies will be essential for designing timely and targeted control measures against this invasive species.
This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health Research Enhancement Award (R15AI151766) and the Department of Biology at Baylor University.
Tamar Carter earned her Ph.D., in genetic and genomics and Master of Public Health at the University of Florida, where she studied genetic variation associated with parasite antimalarial resistance and host genetic red blood cell disorders in Haiti. Her interest in bridging research and public health led her to complete an internship at the UF Public Health Laboratory in Gressier, Haiti, and serve as a James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
During her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, her interests grew to include malaria vector surveillance through collaborations with Jigjiga University in east Ethiopia. Now at Baylor, Carter’s research program applies both molecular and data science approaches to investigate vector and parasite evolution, coevolution, and ecology to inform strategies for malaria control.
In addition to Carter, the research team included:
