The Graduate School at Baylor University serves students in over a hundred programs across the humanities, arts, and sciences with resources designed to holistically support their academic and professional development. Come and explore what Baylor has to offer.

Everything you need to know to plan your visit to Baylor's Spring 2024 Commencement.

As we celebrate Graduate Student Appreciation Week at Baylor, we are honoring more than 5,500 dedicated students shaping the university's future through teaching, research, and real-world impact, extending the Baylor legacy worldwide.

Baylor is launching a new Ph.D. program in Materials Science & Engineering by leveraging faculty strengths and societal needs, highlighting the university's commitment to collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches.

As an R1 Christian research university, Baylor is focused on the development of outstanding graduate students who will “fling their green and gold afar” with excellence in their chosen field. Embedded within the relationships between faculty and student is an aspect of stewardship, to help him or her succeed.

As an R1 institution, Baylor beckons top global graduate minds. Rooted in its Christian tradition and values, Baylor fosters a unique space for scholars to intertwine high-level research with faith exploration.

Baylor, a beacon of care and community, extends its Christian mission through genuine relationships and tailored services. Embracing growth, it now prioritizes diverse student needs in its expanding programs.

Baylor is distinct as an R1 Christian research university—big enough to call elite national research universities as peers, but with a focus on faculty-student relationships that are a hallmark of the Baylor experience. Now, Baylor faculty are demonstrating the same level of care and availability to students wherever they are.

Over the last five years, Baylor's Graduate School has seen significant growth, attainment of R1 status, and a sustained investment in research expenditures—and the momentum is only beginning.

The first time Auldynn Chambers heard someone suggest he consider pursuing his doctorate after graduating from Baylor, his immediate thought was, “Only really smart people get Ph.D.s. I’m not smart enough to do that.”

Soon, Chambers will be doing just that, and pursuing a passion he discovered at Baylor — artificial organ development.

Ph.D. student, Jerrad Watts, received an award for best graduate student oral presentation at the 2024 North-Central & South-Central Section Meeting.

Graduate:  Jerrad Watts,  “Psycho” Echinoid Spines – Evolution through Spine Morphospace in Crown Group Cidaroid Echinoids

Congratulations to the more than 3,500 students who have earned a Baylor degree this spring – including the more than 3,300 who will walk across the Ferrell Center stage as part of Commencement ceremonies this Friday and Saturday.

Online students benefit from our top-ranked, 60-year-old program offering an evidence-based, people-focused education and opportunities for internship placements in their own communities. A baylor education.

With a Baylor education, you can trust that you will be prepared for your future as a knowledgeable practitioner. After earning a master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, completing a clinical fellowship year, passing the Praxis exam, and pursuing state licensure and ASHA certification, students will enter the field as compassionate and knowledgeable clinicians who are prepared to make an impact in the lives of clients and their families in the communities in which they live.

Baylor’s online CSD program utilizes the same curriculum as the on-campus program and is taught by many of the same expert Baylor faculty. With a Baylor education, you can trust that you will be prepared for your future as a knowledgeable clinician.

By The Numbers

Baylor University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders brings 60 years of SLP education experience to online learners rooted in research, clinical experiences, and real-world competencies.

By pursuing a career as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), you’ll not only serve your community, but you will also join an in-demand field. Employment of SLPs is projected to grow 21 percent from 2021 to 2031.

From 2020 to 2023, graduates of Baylor’s online and residential CSD master’s programs had a 89.63% Praxis pass rate — and an employment rate of 96.8%.

Online Baylor CSD students learn from live instructors in the evening and spend their daily hours at placement sites, completing a minimum of 400 clinical hours.

Program Components

The 45-credit online CSD graduate program can be completed in five trimesters (full time) or seven to 11 trimesters (part time). As part of the program, you will be required to complete three clinical practica and a clinical internship. Upon graduation, you will be prepared to assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults with innovative clinical work and evidence-based practice.

The courses that make up the program’s curriculum integrate academic, research, and clinical experiences. As a student in the online CSD graduate program, you will be exposed to current theories, principles, cutting-edge technologies, research methods, and practices. As an online CSD graduate student, you will attend live online classes each week, facilitating face-to-face interactions with your professors and peers.

In addition to the leveling and graduate coursework, you will be required to have passed the four sciences required by ASHA for certification: biology, chemistry or physics, social/behavioral, and statistics. It is recommended that these courses be completed prior to starting the program, if at all possible.

The curriculum includes clinical experiences, providing ongoing, real-world experience and valuable networking opportunities. Students complete at least 400 clinical clock hours across one internship and three practica for nine credit hours in total. Each practicum counts as one credit hour and involves a weekly commitment of 24-36 hours. The internship counts as five credits and involves a weekly commitment of 35-40 hours.

Program Tracks

Hold a CSD bachelor’s degree or have completed required post-baccalaureate work in the speech field within the last five years.

Hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-CSD major and have not completed introductory courses in speech, language, and hearing; these applicants must complete leveling courses (available through the Baylor program) before starting graduate coursework.

  • Graduate Admissions

Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences maintains the same admissions standards for the SLP master’s online as it does for the on-campus program. In order to apply, students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. An undergraduate GPA of 3.4 or higher is preferred. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree in CSD, you may have to take leveling courses before beginning the graduate-level courses. Introduces the role of the professional nurse as a member of the interprofessional healthcare team through concepts such as the nursing process, standards of practice, and philosophy of nursing from a current and historical perspective. Critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and caring are also introduced as tools to enhance the nurse-patient relationship.

An introduction to the concepts of professional nursing practice, emphasizing the establishment of the nurse-patient relationship, application of the nursing process, and development of psychomotor skills.

This course provides a critical analysis of individuals with multiple and complex problems and the effects of those problems on families and groups. A case-study/discussion format will be used to integrate physiological and spiritual needs across levels of care and across the lifespan.

Clinical placement is a required educational component of Baylor’s online nursing programs. The hands-on learning, supervision and applying theory into practice prepare you for your future role in the field. Many students also find potential employment opportunities at their placement site upon graduation.

How Does This Benefit You?

At Baylor, we believe you are only as successful as your training—that’s why we collaborate with our students to identify and secure sites and preceptors for all clinical rotations. Our staff will sort through the logistics of clinical placement so you can focus more on coursework and building competencies as a nurse.

How Does the Clinical Placement Process Work?

As a newly enrolled student, you’ll partner with our clinical team to determine unique placement needs. We’ll collaborate with you to identify placement opportunities, including locating and securing a quality site and preceptor during your program. You’ll be responsible for several preparation tasks, including filling out forms, passing a drug screening, background check and proof of recommended vaccinations.

What is the Placement Experience Like?

During your placement experience, you’ll have access to faculty and resources to support you on and off-site, including mentorship and guidance for procedures, patient interactions and proficiencies. At the end of your rotation, you and your preceptor will review requirements and complete any surveys. You may receive new details for your next clinical experience if you have multiple rotations.

What Can I Expect from My Preceptor?

Your preceptor is your on-site role model and will help you develop as a nurse during your clinical rotation. They will focus on helping you bridge gaps between theory and practice, orientate you to the practice setting, help you plan clinical assignments, provide 1:1 supervision, give daily feedback and complete required paperwork on your behalf.

Baylor establishes their contracts with institutions to provide us with one preceptor per student and sets requirements for the preceptors. I believe this will have a significant impact on the experience that we receive in the clinical learning environment.

A recent study led by Tamar Carter, Ph.D. , assistant professor of biology and tropical disease biologist at Baylor University, has uncovered critical insights into the spread of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito species, in the Horn of Africa. The findings, published in the  Molecular Ecology , reveal how this mosquito, which can spread malaria, is establishing itself in new regions, posing a significant public health threat.

“Understanding the genetic structure and spread patterns of Anopheles stephensi is crucial for developing effective control strategies,” Carter said. “Our findings highlight the need for heightened surveillance and targeted vector control in identified hubs to combat the spread of malaria.”

KEY FINDINGS

  • Spread Patterns : The study shows that Anopheles stephensi has spread from central locations like Djibouti to other areas in Ethiopia and Somaliland, forming four main genetic groups.
  • Major Hubs Identified : Dire Dawa in Ethiopia emerged as a significant hub, with high genetic connectivity to other regions, indicating it plays a crucial role in the mosquito's spread.
  • Genetic Diversity : The highest genetic diversity was found near Djibouti, suggesting it as the primary source of the mosquito's invasion in the Horn of Africa.
  • Environmental Impact : The study did not find strong links between the mosquitoes' genetic diversity and environmental factors, likely due to the recent establishment of the species in the region.

IMPLICATIONS

This research provides vital information that can help target mosquito control efforts more effectively. By focusing on major hubs like Dire Dawa, public health officials can work to prevent future malaria outbreaks. The study underscores the importance of genetic analysis in tracking and managing the spread of invasive species.

“This study provides a valuable roadmap for public health interventions. By pinpointing key areas where the mosquito is most established, we can allocate resources more efficiently and protect vulnerable populations,” Carter said.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

The research team emphasizes the need for continued monitoring and more extensive sampling to better understand the long-term impacts of Anopheles stephensi in the Horn of Africa. Integrating genomic and environmental analyses into future studies will be essential for designing timely and targeted control measures against this invasive species.

FUNDING AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health Research Enhancement Award (R15AI151766) and the Department of Biology at Baylor University.
