Your application must be completed and supporting documentation must be received by December 1.

How to Apply

  • Use the Apply Now button below and sign in using your existing account information or create a new account to start a new application.
  • Fill out the application in full and submit it when complete. Once submitted, you will be emailed a link to the Status Portal. 
  • In your portal, you will be able to submit your application fee payment and supporting documents (personal statement, CV, etc.). 
  • Use the checklist on the Status Portal to make sure your supporting documents are submitted by the deadline for your application. All supporting documents must be received by the application deadline for you to be reviewed. 
  • Once all application materials are received, your application will be sent for review. If additional materials are needed, you will be notified.

Requirements

Transcripts.

You must submit transcripts for every college or university you have attended. At the point of application, please only submit unofficial transcripts. If admitted, official transcripts will be required in order to matriculate. 

Application Fee

Once you submit your application, you will have access to your status portal, which will include a link to pay your $85 application fee.

Application Fee Waiver Policy

Participants in the following programs only will be approved for a fee waiver once there is confirmation of your participation. Participants in the following programs must submit verification of program participation, such as a letter bearing the original signature of the program director or adviser, or a copy of the current contract.

  • EOP, HEOP or SEEK program
  • Veteran or military status (including spouses)
  • Received a GRE fee waiver

We cannot grant fee waivers for any other reasons, including for international applicants.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required. You will enter contact information for letter writers when you fill out the application, and they will be notified automatically and will be sent a link to submit their letter. In your portal, you can check the status of your letters, send reminders, or edit recommenders.

As a medical school focused on scientific discovery, our admission committees would like to understand applicants' prior research experiences. Note that this experience is not required for admission but is helpful information as we consider your application. 

If you have previous research experience, please make sure to list all prior experiences on your Resume or CV. Please list specific details, such as institution or company, duration of experience, PI or lab supervisor name, average hours you worked per week, and a brief description of your role. If you have presented or published, please also list all of these experiences, even local or small conferences are helpful information! All experiences should also be listed in chronological order.

Personal Statement

Your personal statement should include the following three sections. You may provide additional information that you believe would help the committee get to know you, but please cover these topics at a minimum.

  • Why I want a PhD degree and why UB would be a good place to pursue this degree. (500 word limit)
  • An example of a time where I showed initiative and perseverance in meeting a goal and/or overcoming an obstacle. (500 word limit)
  • A brief description of my prior research experiences (for applicants who have had more than one research experience, you may choose one to describe). If you do not have prior research experience, you may describe a class presentation, essay, lab, or assignment relevant to biological sciences. (750 word limit)

If applicable, it is also recommended that you use your statement to address any stumbles or obstacles that have affected your academic performance thus far.

  • The GRE is no longer required.
  • Strong consideration is given to students who majored in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy or psychology. Recommended undergraduate courses include general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physiology, physics and mathematics, including calculus and statistics.        

International Applicants

Special note for international students.

If you are applying from outside the United States, apply as early as possible to ensure time for application and visa processing.

Regardless of your program’s deadline, it is recommended that you apply at least 6-9 months prior to the term start date (depending on your country of origin). Check with your program’s application coordinator for specific guidelines.

Welcome to the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program is a highly individualized and accelerated doctoral training program for outstanding students committed to biomedical research careers. NIH Oxford-Cambridge (OxCam) students partner with two Investigators - one at the NIH and another at the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom - to perform a single, collaborative dissertation project. Since the program is based on the British system, OxCam Scholars perform doctoral research without required formal courses other than those students choose to take in relationship to their own scientific interests. As a result, OxCam students are able to complete the doctoral degree in approximately four years. Students are expected to divide the time evenly between the two laboratories, with two years in the NIH laboratory and two years in the UK laboratory.

Applications for the NIH OxCam Program are available online between August and December. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and possess a Bachelor's degree by the start of the program. Students selected for admission typically demonstrate a sincere passion for science through previous participation in summer, job-related, or undergraduate/post-baccalaureate research opportunities.

  • No formal coursework required. Courses are available, if desired
  • Earns a doctoral degree from Oxford or Cambridge
  • Average time to completion is just over four years 

Now in its 20th year, the  NIH Oxford-Cambridge (OxCam) Scholars Program has grown from the first class of two students to a population of well over 100 aspiring young scientists whose interests find them involved in some of the most cutting edge biomedical research endeavors being conducted in the world.

Student Timeline and Benchmarks

The NIH Oxford-Cambridge (OxCam) Scholars Program is a highly individualized doctoral program for outstanding students seeking to pursue a career in biomedical research. OxCam Scholars partner with two Investigators - one at the NIH and another at either the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge - to perform a single, collaborative dissertation project. While in the program, OxCam Scholars are enrolled at Oxford or Cambridge in the UK as well as appointed as a predoctoral IRTA at the NIH. Each student divides the time evenly between the two laboratories, with approximately two years at the NIH and two years in the UK. 

Students interested in pursuing a career as a physician-scientist may pair the NIH OxCam Program with a U.S. medical school or Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) via the NIH MD/PhD Partnership Training Program . NIH MD/PhD Program students partner with the medical school for the M.D. phase of training, and participate in the OxCam Program for the PhD phase of training. Funding for the medical school portion of the MD/PhD Program is provided through extramural MSTP funding from the participating medical school.

Introduction

The goal of the Ph.D. graduate program in Biomedical Science at UConn Health is to educate individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science in a wide variety of settings including academia, the private sector and in government service. To achieve this goal an academic environment is maintained which fosters creative thinking and supports programs leading to excellence in scholarship, research and teaching. The program is dedicated to quality education tailored to the needs of the individual student.

UConn Health is the health sciences campus of the University. It is home to a division of the Graduate School, the School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine. UConn Health offers a wide range of educational and research opportunities with talented faculty pursuing exciting and innovative research on contemporary problems in biology and medicine.

Program Description

1st year students enter the Biomedical Science Ph.D. program register for MEDS 6503: First Year Graduate Experience in Biomedical Science. This new year-long course encompasses the three required laboratory rotations as well as an initial exploration block during which students can learn more about all seven Areas of Concentration (AoCs):

allowing them time to consider and select rotation labs.  This course gives students the opportunity to become familiar with ongoing research at UConn Health and obtain a sound academic foundation for future study. Many laboratories representing diverse scientific areas are available for graduate student research rotations and doctoral dissertation research. After the first year, each student selects a thesis laboratory and affiliates with one of the AoCs to develop competency in their desired scientific discipline.

Training and cohort-building programme 

A dedicated Biomedical Science training and cohort-building programme will draw on the training offered by the collaborating departments, whilst offering the students on the PhD programme additional training and opportunities to promote collaboration and networking across the programme.

Cohort activities will include: a monthly journal club, an annual research symposium, and other cross-departmental YBRI seminars and events.

The York Graduate Research School (YGRS)  connects more than 2,000 postgraduate researchers (PGRs) across all disciplines and brings together the support you need to make the most of your research project.

All new research students are offered mentorship from within the existing research student community. For those new to York, mentors work in the same research area. Those who have previously studied at York will be offered a mentor working in a different research area. The mentor partnership is a means to explore options and understand more about working as a research student at the University of York.

EPSRC Mobility DTP in Leadership and Excellence in Circular, Resource-efficient, Sustainable Manufacturing

One of a number of pilot programmes aimed at widening participation in Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) doctoral training, specifically those from industry and other non-academic backgrounds.

Completion of this degree offers opportunities in academic institutions, industry, government agencies and administrative positions for individuals who wish to pursue careers as independent researchers, educators, administrators or other positions requiring a terminal degree. This curriculum typically is completed in five to six years.  Base stipends for PhD students are $37,000 per year effective July 1, 2024.  Ph.D. students are also provided with paid health insurance and tuition and fees paid by a Dean’s scholarship. 

Graduate training in the biomedical sciences is offered in the following areas: biochemistry, bioengineering, bioinformatics, biostatistics, cancer biology, cardiovascular biology, cell biology, cell regulation, data science and informatics, drug discovery, epidemiology, genomics, genetics and development, immunology, lipidomics, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, oral biology and pathogenesis, pathology, pharmacology, proteomics, signal transduction, structural biology, toxicology, virology and many others.

The first year curriculum offers an entire academic year for Ph.D. students to explore all of the graduate training programs before selecting a program and research area. Students in biostatistics, epidemiology, data science, and informatics take a specialized curriculum designed by their department.

Requirements

The applicant must possess a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning or a doctorate from a professional school. No single metric is used to assess applicants, but rather a broader picture of the candidate's qualities is considered by the admissions committee. Applicants are assessed on evidence of satisfactory undergraduate preparation in the sciences, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. Participation in a monitored research experience is highly recommended for those interested in the basic sciences.  The general GRE test is no longer required for most of our programs. Students applying for Biostatistics and/or Epidemiology are strongly encouraged to submit their official GRE scores .

International Students

International applicants must have all application materials submitted by the Regular deadline of December 13, 2024. 

Because several months may be required for securing needed information and for processing an application from abroad, foreign nationals are urged to submit complete information as early as possible. In addition to other official entrance credentials, those applicants whose native language is not English must submit the official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS score) exam. The TOEFL or IELTS score must not be more than two years old. Final consideration cannot be granted to an international student’s application for admission until these official scores are received by the Office of Enrollment Management. Competitive scores for the TOEFL equals 100 and for the IELTS equals 7.

If an international applicant has graduated or will graduate from an institution that uses English as the language of instruction, the TOEFL/IELTS may be waived upon request after the application is submitted.

All international applicants that have attended international institutions must submit transcripts that have been evaluated by an external credentials service by the application deadline to be considered. The program will not waive this requirement nor make exceptions . We accept evaluations from  World Education Services ,  National Association of Credential Evaluation Services , or  International Education Research Foundation . If offered a position, and the applicant has only submitted an unofficial transcript evaluation, the candidate will be required to provide an official transcript and evaluation before any further consideration of that applicant will be given.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted through the dates shown below. However, the admissions process is rolling and you are encouraged to submit all of your application materials by December 13 for best consideration. 

All applications to the College of Graduate Studies must be submitted online. If you are unable to apply online you must petition the office of the Dean for special accommodation explaining why you are unable to apply online. The online application fee is automatically waived for domestic applicants applying to all College of Graduate Studies Ph.D. programs.

In addition to the application itself the applicant must complete all supplemental materials specific for the program to which they are applying.  These forms are available in PDF format within the application and are also sent through email once an application is submitted.  If references are submitted electronically (see application for instructions), it is not necessary to submit paper references.

Applicants are required to submit unofficial or official transcripts for each and every post-secondary school attended even if listed as transfer credit on another transcript. All materials must be received by the application deadline. In the cases where we accept unofficial documents, the unofficial document must be a copy of the original. If you are submitting an unofficial transcript, it must reflect all courses, grades, degrees awarded (if applicable), and the name of the institution must be clearly visible.

All applicants that have attended international institutions are required to submit transcripts that have been evaluated by an external credentials service. We accept evaluations from  World Education Services ,  National Association of Credential Evaluation Services , or  International Education Research Foundation . If offered a position, and the applicant has only submitted an unofficial transcript evaluation, the candidate will be required to provide an official transcript and evaluation before any further consideration of that applicant will be given.

Some academic advising reports and degree audits do not contain all the necessary information so please review the document before submitting. As part of your online application, you may upload one copy of the scanned unofficial transcript from each undergraduate and graduate institution where you earned credit. For International transcripts, please make sure you include the diploma or certification verifying the degree obtained.

If you are offered a position, you will be asked to request an official transcript from each institution listed in the Education section of your application, regardless of the number of credits earned. MUSC reserves the right to rescind any offer of admission if any discrepancies are found between your unofficial and official transcripts.

As a Ph.D. student you may take an interdisciplinary first year curriculum that allows exposure to all departments and programs before a research area and mentor are selected. The curriculum consists of interactive and comprehensive didactic units, self-selected laboratory rotations, and seminars to set the stage for your research career. Later, we encourage you to define your own schedule of courses to complete your educational plan.

Use of Marijuana and/or CBD Products

Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug and is illegal to purchase in South Carolina. Apart from a narrow and limited scope of codified/documented medical exceptions, it is illegal for individuals to use marijuana/tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in South Carolina. Although cannabidiol (CBD) products may be purchased and used in South Carolina, please be aware that CBD products may contain higher levels of THC than represented on packaging and use of CBD products can result in a positive drug screen for THC/marijuana. Be aware that current drug testing methods cannot accurately ascertain the origins of THC metabolites (i.e., whether from marijuana or CBD products). Your academic program has the authority to conduct random and/or scheduled drug testing; if your test result is reported as positive for THC metabolites (even if you only used a CBD product), your ability to be accepted into the program, progress in the program, and/or successfully complete the program may be negatively impacted.

Scholarship Eligibility

MUSC offers scholarships for which you may be eligible. Some are awarded based on academic achievement; others are awarded based on community service, for example. However, the majority of scholarships awarded at MUSC are based on financial need. This means those scholarships are only awarded to students who need some financial assistance to cover the cost of tuition and fees. If you would like to be considered for a financial need-based scholarship, you must have an up-to-date Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file. Make sure you list Medical University of South Carolina on your FAFSA form, along with MUSC’s code: 003438. We encourage you to submit the FAFSA as early as possible. It is recommended to submit the FAFSA in January if you plan to enroll in the Fall.

GSBS Competitive Scholarship for MS Students

Competitive Scholarships are awarded by the various concentrations and programs within GSBS. It is up to the concentration/program to determine the amount and number of scholarships they will be awarding each year based on the funds available and other factors determined by each concentration/program. All admitted students are automatically considered for competitive scholarships, so no separate application forms or interviews are necessary. The GSBS office notifies scholarship winners at the time of admission to the university.

Criteria to be reviewed holistically include:

  • Undergraduate GPA GRE
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Personal Interview (Optional)
  • Students must maintain full time status in the Fall and Spring semesters to maintain eligibility for the scholarship. If a student drops below full time status, they will lose their scholarship for the next semester.
  • Students must also maintain satisfactory progress on their degree plan and remain in good standing. If a student goes onto academic probation, they will lose their scholarship for the next semester.
  • During the semester of the forfeited scholarship, if a student has a semester GPA above a 3.0, the scholarship will be renewed.

Luis Reuss Scholarship in Membrane Research

Luis Reuss, M.D., former Chair of the Department of Cell Physiology and Molecular Biophysics (CPMB), is an internationally-recognized investigator in the field of membrane transport. In an effort to recruit and retain the best quality students, CPMB will honor Dr. Reuss’ contributions to the department and the field of membrane research through the Luis Reuss Scholarship in Membrane Research. The scholarship will provide a competitive $1,500 one-time award to students with a declared mentor that is a primary faculty of CPMB and that conduct research in the broad area of membrane research, including cell and synthetic membranes, membrane transport, and biochemistry and biophysics of membrane proteins.

  • Research experience (including meeting presentations and publications) and research progress (last research rubric form for GSBS).
  • The applicants will be ranked by the committee, and up to three awards will be given each year.

The Department of Cell Physiology and Molecular Biophysics (CPMB) seeks to continually recruit and retain the best quality students. Students will receive a $10,000 scholarship and will be eligible for a one-year extension.

TNP students may be nominated by mentor or any TNP graduate faculty member. Dr.'s Norman and Jumper ask that faculty take a holistic view in deciding which student is most deserving of this award based on: academic and research performance, leadership and/or community involvement, financial need, etc. After reviewing the student's CV and mentor letter of recommendation, TNP faculty vote and nominated student is presented to Dr.'s Reid Norman and Cynthia Jumper.

Graduate scholarship to be awarded to a PhD or MD/PhD student in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience/Translational Neuroscience and Pharmacology Graduate Concentration by the Center of Excellence of Translational Neuroscience and Therapeutics (CTNT).

Award will be ten thousand dollar scholarship ($10,000.00), annually, to a Translational Neurosciences and Pharmacology (TNP) PhD student, and may be renewed one additional year (for a total two-year award).

Location : The ANU is situated in Canberra, Australia’s capital city. Canberra is a well-resourced regional city, set amongst beautiful mountains and surrounded by eucalypt forests. Bike riding and hiking are everyday activities, and we are a two-hour drive away from both winter snowfields and some of the most beautiful beaches on Earth. Canberra’s birdlife is stunning, and we regularly have to brake for kangaroos on our daily commute. Despite its regional setting, Canberra is a vibrant, multicultural city. There are frequent cultural evenings, festivals, art exhibits, music events, and world-class restaurant and coffee scenes.

The Australian National University: We are a research-intensive university and have an international reputation for research excellence. The ANU is frequently ranked as Australia’s top university, and one of the top 50 universities in the world.

Candidate eligibility : Domestic applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens, and must have previously completed a 1 st  class Honours or Masters thesis in a relevant field. Fully funded International PhD scholarships are highly competitive at the ANU. To be a viable candidate you need: (1) excellent undergraduate marks; (2) a Masters by Research with a high mark; or (rarely) equivalent proof of research experience. (3) While not essential, having published research papers in the past is an advantage.

What do I do? First, contact potential supervisors from the list of staff on the Research Groups above (include your CV and grades, and some details about what it is that attracts you to their field of research). If they are interested in supervising you, you can submit an application to commence a PhD via the online link below. Your application should include a detailed CV, full academic transcripts, the name of your potential supervisor, and a brief description of a research project that you and your potential supervisor have discussed. Entry to the PhD program is open to applicants with a Bachelor degree that have also completed (or are in the process of completing) an Honours or Masters research degree that comprises at least a half year, full time research component and a thesis (5,000-10,000 words). Applicants with significant research experience and publications may be deemed eligible if their achievements can be justified as equivalent to completing an Honours/Masters degree. As part of your application for undertaking a PhD, you will automatically be considered for a stipend scholarship if you tick the scholarship box in the application. General information is provided on how to apply and details about the Doctor of Philosophy program (use this link to apply online). Your application will need to include the following, so make sure you plan ahead to meet the strict deadlines. PhD applications are due by 15 April (the mid-year round for both international and domestic students),  31 August (international students), or 31 October (domestic students). Your application will require:

  • Academic transcripts and graduation/completion certificates from your Bachelor and Honours/MSc degree (in its original language and, if needed, a translation), with grading scale information.
  • A current CV, including scholarships or prizes, publications and conference presentations.
  • A research proposal (this is quite short and your potential supervisor can help you with it).
  • Proficiency in English: For international students from many countries, a current IELTS or TOEFL certificate is required. 
  • Three referee reports. You need to enter your referee details on the application form. The system then automatically sends them a link to complete an online form. NB: You need to ensure your referees are willing and able to write recommendation letters and do so promptly. Plan ahead and alert them.

The Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is individually tailored to meet our students' specific needs and research interests.

The Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences program bridges basic sciences and biomedical research interests to discover and advance medically relevant knowledge, ultimately leading to improved quality of life for future generations.

The program develops the ability of graduate students to apply research skills from bench to bedside, translate fundamental discoveries into new treatments for human diseases, and prepare them for careers in academia, medical research, and biomedical and biotechnology industries.

The Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences program admits students only during the fall term.

Eligibility

The minimum requirements for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program are: 

  • A bachelor's degree requiring at least four (4) years of full-time study in a relevant discipline awarded with honours. 
  • The degree should include a research component comprised of a thesis, other research projects or research methodology subjects that constitute at least 25% of a full time (or part time equivalent) academic year. 
  • The applicant must have achieved at least a distinction average in the final year; or a master's degree that includes a research component comprised of at least 25% of a full time (or part time equivalent) academic year with an overall distinction average or a master's degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average; or evidence of appropriate academic qualifications and/or experience that satisfies the ADVC RT&D or nominee that the applicant has developed knowledge of the field of study or cognate field and the potential for research sufficient to undertake the proposed program. At RMIT a grade of Distinction represents academic achievement of 70% or higher and a High Distinction is 80% or higher.

PhD Scholarship Opportunities in Biomedical Sciences

Funding and scholarship opportunities for PhD programmes in Deanery of Biomedical Sciences.

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarship (EDCS) 2024/25

The university and the deanery of biomedical sciences will offer one studentship to a student starting their phd research in the 2024-25 academic session. .

This exciting scholarship scheme provides a valuable opportunity for postgraduate research students to undertake a package of training and development, which will help them to develop the necessary skills required to meet their career choices. It offers them a breadth of development opportunities in areas such as teaching, public engagement, entrepreneurship, data science, and research.

The scholarship covers the University tuition fee as well as a full stipend in line with UKRI rate (£18,622 for 2024/25). Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship is offered for 4-years (or pro-rata for part-time).

The scheme is open to UK and overseas students applying to start their first year of study for an on campus PhD degree in 2024-2025. Candidates applying for a start date before September 2024 and continuing students are not eligible to apply.

The University of Edinburgh has been working for some time to embed equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in its activities and to widen participation (WP) for students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds. The Doctoral College is committed to embedding EDI in all of its policies and processes, and widening access to postgraduate study to traditionally underrepresented groups, including BAME students and those from the most deprived communities in Scotland and the rest of the world. The Doctoral College wishes to attract the greatest diversity of applications to this scheme and will ensure that recruitment processes are robust and unbiased.

To apply for the EDCS scholarship please note that you must first apply for admission to the PhD programme that interests you. Applying to a PhD programme is done online through the degree-finder by selecting the appropriate programme from this list and following the application process:

After you have formally applied to a PhD programme the next step is to apply for the EDCS scholarship. Links to do this will become available a week to two weeks after your PhD application is submitted.

The deadline for EDCS applications is 29th February 2024.   Therefore you are advised to complete your PhD application well in advance of this date.

Please note that applications that are not supported by a supervisor will  not  be considered.

The selection panel will shortlist candidates by the end of March 2024 , and we anticipate that interviews will take place online at a date that will be confirmed as soon as possible.
