Graduate Welcome Prospective Students

Graduate – prospective – welcome, the graduate program of the ucla english department is one of the strongest, most diverse, and most intellectually exciting in the country. consistently highly ranked across fields, it receives over 200 applications of admission each year and enrolls an entering class of 8-12 students, all of whom receive full funding. the course of study toward the ph.d. balances critical rigor and historical breadth with flexibility and individual focus. seminars include both the traditional values of the discipline and the exciting innovations that are reshaping its future. we offer courses that incorporate the literary canon, investigate various modes of inquiry, and teach a range of critical methodologies..

A variety of field-specific research centers, colloquia, lecture series, and informal reading groups provide important adjunct experiences to the formal classroom. Graduate students are welcome at the lectures and conferences conducted by the Medieval and Renaissance Center and the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Studies Center. The Department also sponsors a monthly lecture series by distinguished theorists and scholars on the future of the discipline. Our proximity to several important research centers– the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, the Huntington Library, and the Getty Research Institute–offers distinct advantages to many of our graduate students. With the generous help of the Mellon Foundation, UCLA has been at the forefront of rethinking the humanities. As a result, we have expanded our department offerings in new and emerging interdisciplinary areas. Graduate students are encouraged to work closely with their advisors throughout their studies in shaping a program responsive to their particular interests. The English Department heavily values training and supervised experience in teaching as an integral part of the preparation we offer for the profession.

Students are admitted only in the fall, and only for the Ph.D.; students may be awarded an M.A. degree in the course of the Ph.D program, but we do not offer a separate master’s program. The current academic job market, as you know, continues to be challenging. For this reason, we have reduced the size of our entering class and have a variety of programs in place to prepare our students for academic positions, postdoctoral fellowships, and other professional opportunities, including fulfilling careers outside the university. Because of funding constraints we are able to offer admission to a limited number of international students. We feel obliged to caution you to embark on graduate study with a clear knowledge that performing well in coursework, teaching, and dissertation research, as well as making timely progress toward the PhD, are all crucial in helping you become a successful job candidate several years hence. We would add that UCLA’s placement record has historically ranked among leading graduate programs, and we continue to work hard for our students during these challenging times. We have a dedicated Director of Professionalization and Director of Job Placement , who work with our students in providing information and advice for securing funding and future jobs.

We invite you to browse our website and learn more about the range of activities and wealth of accomplishments that characterize our extraordinary students and faculty in the graduate program.

Note : The UCLA Graduate Division has changed their application format only allowing applicants to submit a 500-word limit Statement of Purpose (SOP). Applicants applying to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department may still submit a two-page SOP by uploading the document as part of the ‘Supporting Documents’ section. We ask that in the SOP section you type the following message “SOP uploaded in the supporting documents section” so that we are aware that you are attaching a two-page SOP.

The Statement of Purpose (SOP) should be precise and brief.  The statement should be no more than 2 pages and should contain only those personal details that would aid the admissions review process.

The SOP is also used to match admitted students with assigned advisors.  All applicants are encouraged to be as specific as possible in their SOP.  General descriptions such as “Electrical Engineering” are not specific enough.  Indicating what branch of Electrical Engineering (such as communications, signal processing, controls, etc.) interests you is much more helpful in the review and advisor matching process.

Please note: No updates of the SOP are accepted.  All applicants are encouraged to double-check all aspects of their application before submitting.  The document included in the application is the ONLY one accepted by the department.

A Resume/CV is required from all applicants. Please upload the Resume/CV onto the “Supporting Documents” section of the application.

Please note: No updates of the Resume/CV are accepted.  All applicants are encouraged to double-check all aspects of their application before submitting.  The document included in the application is the ONLY one accepted by the department.

The writing sample is part of the University application.  It is not required by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.  However, if a writing sample is submitted as part of the application, it will be available for the review committee’s consideration and may be used as part of the evaluation.  No updates of the writing sample will be accepted.  All applicants are encouraged to double-check all aspects of their application before submitting.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department does not have a separate application for departmental funding.  All admitted students are considered for departmental funding.

TA positions are reserved for students in their 2nd+ year in our program.  Therefore, first year applicants are not eligible for TA positions.

Each faculty member determines which students (both those recommended for admission by the admissions committee, and current ECE Graduate students) will be offered GSR positions in his/her lab.

More Funding Information is located by using the link on the left.

The personal history statement is part of the University application. It is not required by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. However, if a personal history statement is submitted as part of the application, it will be available for the review committee’s consideration and may be used as part of the evaluation. No updates of the personal history statement will be accepted. All applicants are encouraged to double-check all aspects of their application before submitting.

Proof of Funding is not considered in the review for admission.  However, admitted, international students must provide proof of funding in order to receive the I-20 or DS-2019 required for their visa application with the U.S Embassy or Consulate.

Admitted, F-1 students who have completed the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) will receive an email with instructions on how to request the I-20 online.  Once the I-20 is generated, it will be released to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Office of Graduate Student Affairs (ECE OGSA).  The ECE OGSA staff will then email the student with a pdf scan of the document and additional shipping information.

Admitted students seeking J-1 status must coordinate with the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars (DCISS) and the ECE OGSA in order to verify that all necessary paperwork is processed for the DS-2019.

Entering cohorts usually total 3-4 students.

Applicants can find more information on the UCLA graduate admission process through the Graduate Division website , along with helpful FAQs .

PREREQUISITES

A Bachelor’s degree in literature, ancient or modern, is a prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. in Comparative Literature program. Applicants whose B.A. program lacks a literature major are required to demonstrate the equivalent knowledge and comprehension of one literature. Applicants are expected to earn a minimum 3.4 grade-point average (GPA) in their upper-division literature courses.

Applicants must also demonstrate literary proficiency in one language other than English, and should possess elementary knowledge of a second language at the time of application to the program.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST

Statement of purpose.

A statement of purpose , up to 500 words in length, which details your background, intellectual interests, and research plans. Please describe how the doctoral program will further your immediate and long-range goals. Autobiographical material can be useful where clearly relevant.

Personal Statement

A personal statement , up to 500 words in length, is an opportunity for you to provide additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. It will also be used to consider candidates for the Cota-Robles and Graduate Opportunity fellowships (applicants should be sure to describe their contributions to diversity). Prompts for this statement can be found within the application.

Letters of Recommendation

Applicants must request three (3) letters of recommendation from scholars who can address the applicant’s intellectual qualifications, with particular attention to literature and languages. Recommenders will receive an email request with instructions for submitting their letters. All letters of recommendation must be submitted online by the application deadline posted on the official Graduate Division webpage for the Ph.D. program.

Test Scores

Submission of GRE scores is not required for application to the Comparative Literature Ph.D. program. Inclusion of GRE scores in the application will not result in preferential consideration by the Admissions Committee.

Applicants who do not hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher from a university located in the United States or in another country in which English is both the primary spoken language of daily life and the medium of instruction are REQUIRED to submit valid Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores to verify their English language proficiency.

You are encouraged to earn a minimum TOEFL score of 87 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or 560 on the paper and pencil test. Applicants who elect to take the IELTS must earn an overall band score of at least 7.0 to qualify for admission.

Transcripts

Applicants must upload unofficial transcripts from each academic institution attended on the online application. Applicants to whom the Department extends an offer of admission will need to send sealed official transcripts bearing the actual signature of the Registrar and the seal of the issuing institution directly to the Department:

UCLA Department of Comparative Literature 350B Kaplan Hall, Box  951536 Los Angeles, CA 90095-1536

Writing Sample

Applicants must submit a research paper or other piece of writing (no more than 15 pages in length) in literature. Please do not submit your entire thesis. Please do not submit more than one paper. Extra papers are not considered by the Admissions Committee. This part of the dossier is very important, and is often given more weight in admissions decisions about admissibility than anything else, since it (potentially) provides evidence of the ability to pursue original research in the field. Applications will not be considered complete if a research paper is not included.

Supplemental Application: Language Proficiency

Applicants to the Ph.D. in Comparative Literature must complete the Comparative Literature Supplemental Application section on the online application for graduate admission. This section requires applicants to disclose their native language and indicate proficiency (reading, writing, and speaking) in up to three (3) additional languages. Your application is considered incomplete if you do not provide this information.

Graduate Admission

The graduate programs at UCLA are some of the most esteemed in the world, consistently ranked in the top 25. Forty doctoral programs rank in the top 10.

Our campus offers more than 130 graduate and professional programs, ranging from an extensive selection of business and medical programs to degrees in 40 different languages. On average, UCLA admits 14,000 graduate students of the 55,000 who apply each year. At UCLA, you’ll be among the best and brightest in the world.

Our programs combine the learnings of one field with the components of another, to create a hybrid of deep specialized knowledge. The notion that knowledge is produced through multidisciplinary approaches is paramount at UCLA. We offer faculty and graduate students the opportunity to collaborate on research projects and study groups that transcend departments and programs.

These collaborations go beyond the campus. UCLA enjoys strong connections to other major universities as well as public and private institutes and firms thanks to its location within Los Angeles. Our graduate students engage with these communities both academically and culturally as a part of the UCLA graduate experience. The students who thrive in the environment are creative, determined and unrelenting in their search for new ways to answer questions.

If this sounds like you, check out our programs and learn more about what we have to offer.

Applying to a Graduate Program

Most graduate applications are processed through the Graduate Education Department. Explore 130+ graduate degree programs and choose the one that’s right for you.

Professional Schools

Four of UCLA’s professional programs offer their own specialized application processes. Follow the links below to learn more about admission steps and requirements at these four schools.

The UCLA Linguistics Department’s normal business hours are M-F 8am-12pm, 1-4pm. Office schedule and availability may change based on UCLA protocol ( www.covid-19.ucla.edu). Masks are optional but strongly recommended indoors. All UCLA affiliates and visitors must self-screen for symptoms before coming to campus.

UCLA

The Department of Linguistics

Graduate admissions, graduate admissions information, the ucla linguistics department welcomes applications from students interested in pursuing the ph.d. degree . the department currently has approximately 45 graduate students. the admissions process is highly competitive; those offered admission are provided with full financial support, with commitments up to five years. support packages include tuition, fees, and salary or stipend, and normally involve a mixture of fellowship, research assistantship, and teaching assistantship., admission to the graduate program .

The admissions application is prepared and submitted online, through the website of UCLA’s Division of Graduate Education . General information about applying to UCLA for graduate study (such as the University’s requirements for admission) is also available at this link. Applicants must meet the  University minimum requirements for admission  (see also the  Frequently Asked Questions  for additional technical information).

Although the department offers both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, it normally admits only those students who plan to ultimately pursue a Ph.D. Students are admitted to begin residence in the Fall quarter only.

We assume a background roughly equivalent to a B.A. in Linguistics. This does not mean that the department will not accept applicants with little Linguistics background. Students lacking sufficient background may, however, need to complete preparatory or supplemental courses in their first year.

The typical class size of entering graduate students per year is about seven to ten. We make admissions offers to about 13-15 applicants per year, from an applicant pool of approximately 180.

Admissions decisions are made by an Admissions Committee composed of department faculty. It will be helpful if applicants include on their Statement of Purpose the names of particular faculty they hope to work with, since the Admissions Committee may solicit the opinions of those faculty in making their decision. You may find our list of active ladder faculty on our Faculty Profiles page.

We recommend you review our Graduate Program Overview page , which includes information about our Graduate Student Support packages .

The deadline for submission of applications for the Fall quarter is December 10 of the previous year. The UCLA Application for Graduate Admission for the 2025-26 academic year (for Fall 2025 consideration) will be available in September 2024, with a deadline of December 10, 2024.

The online application consists of the following:

  • A statement of purpose , explaining their background for graduate study in linguistics and their immediate and long-range goals in the field. Statements of purpose should primarily focus on intellectual interests and research plans, though autobiographical material can be useful where it is clearly relevant. You can find guiding questions for the statement on the UCLA Division of Graduate Education’s website here , under “Statement of Purpose”; 1,500 word limit for our application.
  • If a recommender wants to submit their letter through Interfolio, enter the email address(es) provided by Interfolio for recommenders in the application. Instruct Interfolio to answer all questions on the recommendation forms with the option Dossier Service Completion.
  • Transcripts from each academic institution attended. You must upload one copy of current , unofficial transcripts. An unofficial transcript will be issued by the university or college registrar’s office but may be accessed through a student portal. An unofficial transcript may also be a physical, official copy that has been opened and scanned. Do not provide screenshots, degree progress reports, grade audits, or similar printouts as it will not count as an unofficial transcript. If possible, you should rotate the document or page(s) prior to uploading so that the text is upright for reading. Please see the “Admissions Materials” section below for additional information.
  • A research paper in linguistics (or a related field). This part of the dossier is very important, and is often given more weight in admissions decisions about admissibility than anything else, since it (potentially) provides evidence of the ability to pursue original research in the field.  Please note that a literature review is less useful than an original research paper. If no paper in linguistics or a related field is available, it is better to include a paper in some non-related field, rather than no paper at all.
  • The  University’s English Language Requirement applies to all applicants. Citizenship, U.S. residence and/or work experience are not substitutes for meeting the requirement. Exemptions to submitting TOEFL or IELTS scores can only be made for applicants who meet the criteria as listed on the  English Requirements page on the UCLA Division of Graduate Education’s website. Please see the “Admissions Materials” section below for additional information.
  • UCLA’s fellowship application, found in online admissions application. It is useful to inspect the list of UCLA fellowships carefully, to see what you might be qualified for. Applicants are also encouraged to apply for as many extramural fellowships and scholarships as they are eligible . As part of the fellowship application, they require you to submit a Personal Statement: You can find guiding questions for the statement on the UCLA Division of Graduate Education’s website here , under “Personal Statement.” To a limited extent, the Admissions Committee uses the criterion of what students can be supported with available resources.
  • Although not required, it also would be useful to include with your application an informal list of the courses you have taken in your desired field . Add any information you think would clarify the kind of work you did, especially if the title of a given course does not reflect the actual course content.
  • Please note that the GRE is NOT required for admission to our program . Please do not submit GRE score reports to us, as they will not be considered.

We are not the only linguists at UCLA.  There are graduate programs in  English ,  Indo-European Studies , and specific foreign languages , each with separate admission processes. Please contact these departments directly for information about applying to their graduate programs.

Admissions Materials

Virtually all admissions materials (statement of purpose, research paper/writing sample, transcript etc.) are to be uploaded to the online application. Please contact Graduate Student Affairs Officer if you have any questions.

Transcripts

Transcripts from U.S. institutions

Current, unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the purposes of the application. Acceptable unofficial transcripts from U.S. institutions must:

  • Have the word “transcript” on the document
  • Have the name of the institution attended or are attending
  • Include the student’s name, program of study, and major of study
  • Include a term by term breakdown of each course taken with its corresponding units and grade*
  • Be clearly legible

* This requirement is waived only for those applicants who attended institutions that do not use a traditional grade or grade point system. For those institutions, there must be a note on the unofficial transcript that states that the institution does not assign grades or grade points.

Transcripts and academic records from institutions outside the U.S.

Please  carefully review the UCLA Division of Graduate Education’s website for degree and academic record(s) requirements . Scans of transcripts and academic records are acceptable for the purposes of the application. If available, please also upload a copy of the degree certificate/diploma along with the transcript. Third-party evaluated transcripts, such as evaluations provided by WES, will not count as a transcript. Unless academic records and diplomas are routinely issued in English by the institution, the records in their original language must be submitted with an authorized, complete, and exact English translation.

All academic records must show the dates of enrollment; the subjects or courses taken, together with the units of credit or time allotted to each subject and, if rank is determined, rank in the total class or group. The records must also include a complete description of the institution’s grading scale or other standard of evaluation. Maximum and minimum marks and the steps between them must be indicated.

Official transcripts and academic records

Applicants who are admitted  and  choose to attend the program must submit their official final transcript(s) showing degree conferral. Applicants who completed post-secondary education outside of the U.S. and  who are admitted  and  choose to attend the program must also provide one original or certified copy of their certificate/diploma showing degree conferral in English and one original certified copy of their certificate/diploma showing degree conferral in their original language. Further instructions regarding the delivery of official final transcript(s) and records will be sent to applicants who are admitted and choose to attend the program.

English Language Requirement

As noted above, the University’s English Language Requirement  applies to all applicants. Citizenship, U.S. residence and/or work experience are not substitutes for meeting the requirement. Exemptions to submitting TOEFL or IELTS scores can only be made for applicants who meet the exemption criteria as listed on the  English Requirements page on the UCLA Division of Graduate Education’s website. If you do not meet the exemption criteria, valid (unexpired) TOEFL or IELTS scores are required. Please note that TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for only two years. The scores must be valid at the time of application submission.

  • TOEFL: The minimum score to be considered for admission is  87  on the TOEFL. UCLA does not currently accept  MyBest TOEFL  scores. The institution code for UCLA is  4837 . The linking of TOEFL scores between ETS and the UCLA application only begins after an applicant submits the UCLA application. It may take 5 or more business days after you submit the UCLA application for the TOEFL status on your application to automatically update.
  • IELTS:  The minimum overall band score to be considered for admission is  7.0 on the IELTS. Applicants submitting IELTS scores must arrange their scores to be sent to the UCLA Department of Linguistics (address below) and the UCLA Division of Graduate Education. Updating the IELTS status on an application is a manual process that may take several weeks. If you also arranged for IELTS to mail their scores to the Department as described above, then it may take 1 to 2 weeks following receipt of mailed scores for the Department to manually mark scores as received on your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many years is the Linguistics Graduate Program?

The normative time to complete the program is 5 years. The department offers both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, and all students are expected to complete program requirements at both levels. You may review our Current Graduate Students page to review the normative timeline and requirements for our program.

2. What if I’m an international applicant, and do not meet the eligibility criteria to be exempt from UCLA’s English Language Requirement?

UCLA does not currently accept exception requests to waive the English Language Requirement outside of the exemption criteria listed on UCLA’s Graduate Division website . You will need to take and submit test scores for the TOEFL/IELTS with your graduate program application.

3. Where can I find more information on the graduate application fee waiver?

Please review the University’s fee deferral and waiver requirements and the “Fee Waivers” section in the Admissions FAQs for eligibility requirements and required documentation. All required documentation outlined in the policy must be uploaded to the fee waiver/deferral section of the online application for a request to be considered. If you qualify for multiple deferral or waiver types, only one request type should be selected to prevent any technical issues with the fee deferral/waiver review.

4. If I do not meet the criteria for a fee deferral or waiver, can I submit an exception to the department?

Unfortunately, the university does not accept exceptions to the criteria for fee waivers. These are set at the university level, and individual graduate programs/departments cannot waive this for you.

INTRODUCTION

The graduate program in the Department of Communication trains scholars to conduct original research contributing to the advance of knowledge in communication and related fields, and to teach at the university level. For this reason, the department will only accept students who are seeking the Ph.D. degree (a Master of Science degree may be earned as part of the process of completing the requirements for the Ph.D.).

Admissions Requirements

In addition to the minimum University requirements (an acceptable bachelor’s degree, and a min. cumulative GPA of 3.0 “B” average), the Department of Communication requires:

  • Three letters of recommendation , preferably from faculty who are familiar with the applicant’s written work and research experience.
  • Transcripts from all colleges where the applicant has studied (the department’s evaluation considers not only the record in communication, but all undergraduate work and graduate work, where relevant). You may upload unofficial copies of your transcript to the application; official transcripts will only be required if you’re admitted.
  • Statement of purpose outlining reasons for pursuing graduate work, interests within any social science, and any pertinent intellectual and career experiences and interests. Additionally applicants should indicate at least two prospective faculty mentors (see Research Areas ). The admissions committee considers a strong applicant to have well-conceived research interests and past research accomplishments or experience. Instructions : Your statement can be up to 1,500 words in length (using 1-inch margins and 12-point font). Applicants may submit a supplemental research statement (up to 3 pages) with more details under the “Supporting Documents” tab in the online application, but it is not required.
  • Personal Statement . While the statement of purpose (described above) is about your work, your personal statement is about you. It is an opportunity for you to provide additional information that may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. It will also be used to consider candidates for the Cota-Robles and Graduate Opportunity fellowships. For additional guidance, please see the University of California’s guidance on Personal Statements. Instructions :  Your statement can be up to 500 words in length (approximately 1-page, single spaced, using 1-inch margins and 12-point font). Applicants may submit a supplemental statement (up to 3 pages) with more details under the “Supporting Documents” tab in the online application, but it is not required. To be considered for a Cota-Robles or Graduate Opportunity fellowship, be sure to describe your contributions to diversity. The  University of California Diversity Statement   can be found online.
  • Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report . The GRE is an optional application component. If you’d like to submit your score, the institution code for UCLA for the GRE is 4837 and the Department’s code is 4507. Your score should automatically link to your application (based on your name and social security number). If it doesn’t, please email us a copy of your score report or your test number for us to manually look-it-up.
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, an official statement of scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Testing System examination (IELTS) . The minimum scores required is 7.0 for IELTS and 87 for TOEFL. If you received your bachelor’s degree or higher at a U.S. or English speaking institution, you are exempt from this requirement. Please see detailed information about English Requirements and Proficiency on the Graduate Division site .

Although undergraduate or masters-level study in communication or related disciplines is desirable, it is not mandatory for admission to the program. Applicants need not be uniformly high on all indicators of potential. The admissions committee examines a number of indicators of abilities and skills.

In addition to relatively formal criteria (such as analytic and verbal proficiency), the department pays particular attention to applicants who seem likely to contribute intellectual, social, or cultural diversity to its student body. Women and those from underrepresented backgrounds, in particular, are encouraged to apply.

Application Deadline & Procedures

The deadline to apply for the following Fall quarter is December 1st.

Applicants must submit electronically a completed  Graduate Division Online Application  and upload all supporting materials by December 1st.

All supporting materials, including transcripts and recommendation letters, must be submitted online.

Applications that remain incomplete after the deadline of December 1st will not be reviewed.

Applicants who are officially notified of admission:  One official copy of your transcripts should be sent directly from the registrars of the academic institution(s) you have attended (beyond secondary school or community college). Please note that submitted records become the property of the university and cannot be returned. If you are a university/college senior, do not wait for senior-year grades before submitting your application and transcript. UCLA undergraduates, please note: you do not need to submit official copies of UCLA transcripts.

Please send transcripts to the following address:

Attn:  Graduate Admissions UCLA Department of Communication 2225 Rolfe Hall Los Angeles, CA 90095-1538

Alternatively, if the electronic official transcript is available from your Institution(s), ask them to send it directly to  [email protected] .

Graduate Student Funding

Anticipated expenses for graduate studies can be found at the Financial Aid Office website .

Actual living expenses will depend on personal circumstances. A breakdown of fee and tuition costs can be found on the  Registrar Office website .

Funding Opportunities

UCLA has various funding opportunities and all admitted Ph.D. communication students obtain competitive funding packages depending on their merit and progress in the program. The main funding opportunities are graduate division fellowships, departmental fellowships, and extramural funding. For incoming students, by far the largest source of support comes from one or multiple years of support that the department offers to admitted students. Some of these funds originate from external sources but are controlled by the department.

Graduate Division Fellowship Programs and Support from UCLA Centers

There are a number of campus-wide fellowship programs, e.g., the Eugene Cota Robles Fellowship for which the department can nominate admitted students if you apply and meet the eligibility criteria. To apply for campus-wide awards, complete the fellowship section of your online graduate admissions application. For the Eugene Cota-Robles Award , you must also complete the Diversity Fellowship portion of the admissions application.  Please note the Graduate Opportunity Fellowship Program (GOFP) is only for terminal master’s students. Please review Funding for Entering Students link on the Graduate Division website. Note that for most of these awards recommendation by the department is critical, and the department reserves the right to consider these awards that originate from other places on campus as part of the total award package that we are offering, fully subject to our rules and conditions.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) for the academic year or summer awards are available for the following languages:  Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean (East Asia); Spanish, Portuguese, and Quechua (Latin America); Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish (Middle East); Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese (Southeast Asia). For additional information and requirements specific to each area program please consult the website at http://international.ucla.edu/ .  New incoming students are eligible and there are funding opportunities for international studies.

Departmental Support

The department’s admissions committee will provide all admitted applicants, including international students, for departmental support (stipend, registration fees, nonresident tuition, and teaching assistantships) at the time of admission. Decisions are made based on merit, i.e., the applicant’s strength of record and promise in relation to the other students, and not on financial need.

Our typical funding offer provides five years of support that includes one or two years of fellowship (stipend, registration fees, and if needed, non-resident tuition for the first year) and three or four years of teaching assistantship (TA) positions. Stipends are comprehensive and will be provided for all 12-months in a calendar year. They are ordinarily scheduled for the first and fifth years. In some instances, first-year students with teaching experience may be offered a TA position.

For each year of TA support (typically years 2-4), the department will offer a TA position at 50% (20 hours per week). If a faculty member offers a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) position for one or all of these years, the GSR position will satisfy/replace the departmental support commitment. You can review TA salaries  for a nine-month, half-time appointment and  GSR salary scales . Under certain circumstances, TAs and GSRs qualify to have a portion of their mandatory registration fees (including medical insurance premium) paid by the university and in more limited circumstances, GSRs may qualify to have 100% of non-resident tuition paid. For more information on UCLA’s academic apprentice personnel positions, salary rates, remission rates, and policies go to the Academic Apprentice Personnel Manual .

Extramural Funding

There are many extramural agencies that provide fellowships for graduate students.

We strongly urge our applicants and continuing students to seek out external funding opportunities and apply for every fellowship for which they are eligible.

The UCLA Graduate Division has an online database of extramural funding opportunities called GRAPES available at: https://grad.ucla.edu/funding .  The GRAPES database catalogs over 600 private and publicly funded awards, fellowships, and internships and allows searches by field, academic level, award type, award amount, and other criteria. In addition, there are directories of extramural support that can be found at most university libraries.  You can find a list of these directories at: http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/entsup/extramrl.htm .

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to this FAQ, please read our Admissions Requirements section. It also addresses important application-related topics.

  • Do you offer a terminal Communication master’s degree program? A: We only offer a doctoral degree program. However, our PhD students can – and often do! – apply to receive their master’s degree along the way to completing their doctoral degree.
  • Do you have spring admissions? A: We are a fall-only admissions program.
  • Can I attend your program part-time? A: It’s highly unlikely. We are a full-time resident program, except in rare case-by-case instances.
  • How do I apply? A: The graduate application portal can be found on the UCLA Graduate Admissions website HERE .
  • Can you tell me a bit more about your admissions timeline? A: Yes, let us use Fall 2022 as our working example. The application for Fall 2022 will be updated and go live around September 2021. The submission deadline will be December 1 , 2021. Between September and December 1 none of our faculty will be reviewing applications; we are simply collecting them. Beginning around the second week of December, faculty start to review applications, conduct phone/online interviews, etc. In late-January, our faculty meet to discuss all applicants and create a list of students whom we plan to accept. In early February, we begin notifying applicants of their acceptance (it is normal for notification of acceptance to stretch through March). Every year, this same cycle will repeat.
  • What components of my application are most significant? A: While every aspect of your application has value, some components usually possess more value than others. Of most importance are your letters of recommendation and your research experience and/or academic goals (CV, Statement of Purpose, and Personal Statement). Grades are important too, but if your cumulative GPA is above 3.0 (the UCLA threshold), we don’t have any program-specific cutoffs or thresholds. Grades devoid of the context in which they were earned are of limited utility and will not make or break your application. Did you push yourself to take advanced classes? Did you do well in classes most directly related to your research area? That’s what our faculty are often looking at. If you have special circumstances that explain some of your grades, you can certainly include it in your statement.
  • What are you looking for in my Statement of Purpose and/or Personal Statement? A: This is one of the most important aspects of your application. Please be sure to read the Admissions Requirements section of our website for the basics. Now, for the expanded explanation: the statements allow us to learn about you and to evaluate your application holistically (CV/resumes often cannot provide this). Use your statements to create a narrative of your academic career/work, future academic plans, and personal background/story. Keep in mind that the Statement of Purpose has a 1,500-word maximum and should focus mostly on your work; the Personal Statement has a 500-word maximum and should focus mostly on you. Before you write your statements, it may be useful to think about what you want us to learn about you. Make a list of important achievements, perspectives, and goals. Build the statement around this list. We are looking for students who have made the most of the opportunities they have had, who are not only intelligent but creative and motivated as well. Keep in mind that we have your CV and letters of recommendation, so we don’t necessarily need a list of all accomplishments. However, the statements can fill in the narrative around what you did, specifically, why you did it. What motivates you? What are your research interests and why? These details usually aren’t found elsewhere in your application. There are a few things we suggest not including in the statement. While it can certainly be useful to provide your reasons for applying to our program, don’t include them if they’re too broad in scope, simplistic, or cliche. For example: “I have always wanted to apply to UCLA because it’s one of the elite universities.” However, if you have specific reasons to be interested in our program (e.g., location, specific project, faculty, etc.) be sure to mention them. Regarding your motivation, always be specific. If you write “I have always found AREA X fascinating,” be sure be sure to tell us why.
  • Whom should I ask to write my letters of recommendation? A: The two foremost qualities we look for in a letter writer are: 1.) someone who knows you well and can speak to the quality of your work; 2.) someone who knows how to write an academic reference letter. First, it may be tempting to ask a prominent professor to write a letter for you because they are a well-known person in the field. While we can better contextualize letters from people we know, it’s only helpful if the letter contains meaningful information. If they write, “I’ve met the applicant a few times and they seem intelligent” that’s not useful information. It’s more important to select someone who knows you and can discuss your achievements in detail. Second, the letter writer should know how to write a letter. Academic research programs look for different things than a company. We sometimes read letters from work supervisors that say nice things, but don’t speak to the qualities we find most important.
  • What should I do if I don’t know three recommenders that fit the criteria listed above? A: We understand that three letters are a lot, especially for an undergraduate applying directly to a PhD program. We don’t expect each candidate to have three amazing letters. Your choice is about balance. You want people who know you well, can write good academic letters, and know the research field. Use your choice of three people to create this balance.
  • Is the GRE required or optional, and what are the score requirements? A: The GRE is an optional component of our application. We don’t have any GRE minimum score cutoffs.
  • Is a TOEFL/IELTS score required, and what are the score requirements? A: If you are an international student, an English proficiency exam may be a required component of your application. Please refer to the UCLA Graduate Admissions English Requirements webpage to learn more. The overall UCLA minimum score for IELTS is 7 and for TOEFL it is 87. The department does not enforce any additional cutoffs. In accordance with UCLA policy, your TOEFL sub score minimums should be as follows:  Writing – 25; Speaking – 24; Reading – 21; Listening – 17.
  • Do I need to submit official transcripts with my application? A: No. For the purposes of your application, uploading an unofficial transcript is perfectly acceptable. If you are admitted and you decide to enroll in our program, then you would be required to order official transcripts for our Graduate Admissions Office to review and verify.
  • Do you require supporting documents like a writing sample or research paper as part of the application? A: Supporting documents such as these are not required. However, if you feel that including a writing sample etc. will provide useful context and/or strengthens your application, then we encourage you to submit it in the “Other Supporting Materials” section of your application. Pleas keep in mind that our faculty are reviewing many applications, so if your writing sample is concise there is a much greater likelihood that it will be fully reviewed.
  • What is the Cost of Attendance? A: Tuition and fees for most doctoral and master’s programs are about $17,486 per year for California residents, and about $32,588 annually for non-California residents. Student fees are listed on the UCLA Registrar’s Office website .
  • If I am accepted into your program, will I receive funding? A: Yes, all our PhD students receive funding packages upon admission. Typically, our PhD students will be funded for the duration of their Communication PhD career.
  • Can you explain how student funding works in your program? A: Absolutely! Please refer to the Funding Opportunities section of our department admissions webpage for detailed information. In short, students will receive funding in the form of a fellowship for year one and guaranteed TA support for four more years. Additional opportunities for funding can be found on the UCLA Graduate Division website. If you have additional questions regarding funding, we strongly encourage you to email [email protected] .
  • Are TA positions (and the funding that comes with them) only available after a certain period of time in the program? Does this look different for people coming in having already received a terminal master’s degree? A: Our students can serve as a TA at any point after their 1 st year in the program. During the first year we provide our students with a fellowship, so finding a TA position is not necessary. This will allow you the necessary time to acclimate to life as a PhD student, especially in regard to balancing your research and coursework.
  • If I am applying with a master’s degree already earned, is there any chance my previous coursework could be transferred in order to shorten PhD my time-to-degree? A: If you’ve completed relevant coursework at the graduate level, it’s possible that up to 3 of these graduate courses can be transferred in to fulfill the elective portion of our coursework requirement. Review/approval would need to be conducted by your advisor and the Vice Chair. Transfers cannot be used to substitute for any courses that comprise our core requirement. You can learn about our full coursework requirement HERE .
  • Can I contact faculty members whose research interests I share? A: Yes- you certainly may. In fact, doing so is a good idea because our program uses a faculty advisor/mentorship model. This means that individual faculty members, especially those who are seeking new PhD students, play a large part in the department admission decisions. Email is the preferred method of contact. It’s also best to email specific faculty members only after you’ve submitted an application, so they have something to refer to. In addition to a brief introduction, feel free to concisely articulate what interests you about their research, and why. You can find a list of our faculty members, their personal webpages (by clicking on their name), and their contact info HERE .

Please be advised that all applicants, regardless of their degree or major backgrounds, must submit GRE scores. There are no substitutes for the GRE, including the GMAT.

A GRE score is valid if the examination was given no more than five years prior to the date your application is submitted. If your score has expired, you must re-take the exam no later than December 1, 2023.

Our admitted students have, on average, GRE scores that average in the 80th percentile in the verbal, 94th percentile in the quantitative, and 5.0 or above in the analytical sections. However, there is no minimum score requirement for the GRE.

TOEFL/IELTS Scores

Official TOEFL scores must be sent directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Photocopies of these reports are not considered official documents and cannot be used for admission evaluation.  Please provide the ETS with the following codes when requesting your scores:

TOEFL – UCLA: 4837 / Econ: 84

If you have previously taken the TOEFL exam, your score is valid for two years; scores should be valid at the time your application is submitted. If your score has expired, you must re-take the exam no later than December 1, 2023.

A TOEFL score of at least 560 on the paper and pencil test or 220 on the computer based test is the minimum required. For the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), applicants must have a minimum total passing score of 87. You do not need to meet the minimum passing scores for each section as long as this minimum overall score of 87 is met.

An IELTS overall band score of at least 7.0 is the minimum required.

Applicants who hold a Bachelor’s or higher degree from a university located in the United States or in another country, in which English is both the spoken language and the medium of instruction, or who have completed at least two years of full-time study at such an institution, are exempt from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement and the ESLPE. Please be sure to include such information in your application.

Preparation

A Bachelor’s degree in Economics is recommended but not required. However, a strong background in Economics is essential. An applicant should have formal coursework in intermediate Micro- and Macro-Economic Theory and Econometrics.

Mathematical preparation is also essential. This should include a minimum of one year of Probability and Statistics and two years of Calculus. Additional coursework in mathematics and Statistics, especially Linear Algebra, Matrix Algebra, Advanced Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics and Real Analysis, is highly recommended.

Prior to uploading the academic transcripts to the online application,  please circle all Economics, Math, and Statistics courses.

GPA Requirement

The minimum requirement for admission for a  U.S. applicant is a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, comparable in standard and content to a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California. A scholastic average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better is required or its equivalent if the letter grade system is not used.

An  international applicant  whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold  a degree representing completion of at least four years of study  with above average scholarship from a university or university-level institution.

All prospective applicants are eligible to apply if the above conditions are met.

Entering Class

Our entering class is normally from 20 to 25 students. Our admitted students have strong academic records and outstanding letters of recommendation. They also have, on average, GRE scores that average in the 80th percentile in verbal, 94th percentile in quantitative, and 5.0 or above in analytical. However, there is no minimum score requirement for the GRE in order to apply.

All admitted applicants are considered for Departmental fellowships/funding, and the awards can vary in length and level of support. Some of our students are admitted with funding and others are not. Funding is based on the strength of the entire application for admission and does not require a separate application.

Teaching Assistantships and Readerships are normally offered to all of our students in years two through four, subject to their satisfactory progress in the program.

First-Year Requirements

In addition to your UC application, we take both your academic record and your personal experiences into consideration during the review process . At UCLA, we seek students who have excelled academically and gained valuable perspective from the personal experiences that have helped shape their lives.

Read on to find out more.

The Criteria We Consider

When reviewing an application, we implement a holistic review process, which includes looking at some of the following criteria:

  • Achievement in high school or college coursework
  • Personal qualities
  • Likely contributions to the intellectual and cultural vitality of our campus
  • Achievement in academic enrichment programs
  • Other achievements in any field of intellectual or creative endeavor, including the performing arts, athletics, community service, etc.

Academic Preparation

You must complete 15 A-G courses with at least 11 courses finished prior to the beginning of your last year of high school. To be competitive in the UCLA admission process, applicants should present an academic profile much stronger than any minimum UC admission requirements.  See below for a listing of the A-G requirements:

  • 2 years history/social science
  • 4 years of college-preparatory English
  • 3 years of mathematics (4 years recommended)
  • 2 years of laboratory science (3 years recommended)
  • 2 years of language other than English (3 years recommended)
  • 1 year of visual and performing arts (if available)
  • 1 year of college-preparatory elective

Keep in mind that there is no single academic path we expect all students to follow. However, competitive applicants earn high marks in the most rigorous curriculum available to them.   Each application for admission is reviewed within the context of courses available to that student. If a particular required subject is not available, we’ll consider your application without it.

Standardized Testing (SAT/ACT)

UCLA will not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarship purposes.

If you choose to submit test scores as part of your application, they may be used as an alternative method of fulfilling minimum requirements for eligibility or for course placement after you enroll.

UCLA’s ACT number: 0448 UCLA’s College Board (SAT) number: 4837

Personal Insight Questions

These personal questions are just that — personal. This is your chance to augment the information elsewhere in your application and give us more insight into you during the review process.  Our hope is to hear your true, authentic voice in your responses.   As a first-year applicant, you may respond to four of eight questions. Each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words. Which questions you choose to answer is entirely up to you. You should select questions that are most relevant to your experience and that best reflect your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because we receive more applicants than we have room to accept, admitted students usually have academic achievements far higher than the minimum requirements. So, to be “competitive” is to be among the strongest achieving students to apply.

We look for students who take advantage of the academic opportunities available to them. If you have advanced courses, we encourage you to take advantage of them. The University of California adds extra weight to grades received in UC-certified honors, AP, IB and transferable college courses.

We do not require or accept letters of recommendation in our process and we do not collect transcripts at the point of application . However, once admitted, students are required to submit official transcripts f rom any high school or college they have attended . Some professional schools may request a letter of recommendation as part of their supplemental application process.

We do not offer admission interviews. Applicants are considered for admission based upon the information they submit in the UC application . However, some majors in our  specialty schools require a supplemental application as part of their admission process. Supplemental applications may involve an audition, portfolio submission and/or letters of recommendation. Find out more from the supplemental applications page.

Supplemental Applications

Of course, a strong academic performance combined with sustained, meaningful involvement in extracurricular activities is the ideal. But if it comes down to a choice between excelling in your coursework or your extracurricular activities, choose your academics.

UCLA will honor full IGETC certification from a first-year student if the requirements were completed before entering UC. Partial IGETC, however, will not be accepted from entering first-years at any UC campus and IGETC is not recommended for applicants to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
